    Parkway Drive

    Parkway Drive...

so there's this aussie band who come from my general area. they call it 'metalcore'. as guitar tuition is my main income, i've had to learn their music thoroughly to present it accurately to my students. at first i hated it, it's all in dropped B, which creates it's own issues regarding string gauge/setup etc. but the more i listen and learn, the music they make is starting to really gel with me. i'd recommend 'idols and anchors' and 'carrion' as a starting point. as i said, not my cup of tea exactly. i do think these blokes have a truly great album in them though, once all the shouty stuff is out. i'm only doing the wikilink. check them out, i'm keen to hear the worldwide roth army opinion.

    They fucking rule.

They also transcend metalcore - their last record was an absolute face-ripper. Not for the faint-hearted though.

I posted a review of it in the 'Album Reviews' thread.

Go see 'em live they'll crush you.

i've gotta say also... it's weird that a band coming from this unbelievably idyllic part of the world (byron bay) would make such aggressive sounding music. then again, history shows that to even contemplate that geography might influence musicians stylistically or sonically is at best 50/50.... yeah, i'm arguing with myself and both sides are winning over the last 20 or 30 years we've seen byron turn from cheap and cheerful hippy backpacker paradise, to overblown overbuilt overpriced faux 'celebrity' hangout by the sea where the locals clean toilets, make sandwiches, and have to fight for a wave with julio from 'argentina's next top model'. that's why the kids are pissed off.

    you win, ash.
