    Rickenbacker bass strings.

I recently bought a Ricky 4001 bass and the trouble I've had finding strings that fit the bastard. Anybody got any ideas outside of the ridiculously expensive "Ricky sound" strings?

The cheapest and easiest way I know is to buy an average set of flatwound strings (avoid GHS like the plague. D'Addario aren't too bad, but tend to loose their "newness" relatively quickly.), turn up the treble response in your bridge pick-up and play with a pick. No, I'm not kidding, and it's honestly that simple. The combination of all three elements will give you the classic "Rick" sound without sending you to the poorhouse. Besides, you'll be able to revert to other sounds without being stuck with that same tactile Rick tone on every song you play.

You have to have metal stings for a pickup to work. I like the Dean Markley Blue Steel stings. I play a Jack Casady signature with the Gibson style three bolt bridge. The problem I have is on some brands of strings the wrapping at the ball end is too long and it will go over the saddle. The Dean Markley strings last longer too. I pretty much have them on all my bass guitars now.

But when I think Ricky, I think of this.
