    The 80's

So for a little while now I've gotten into a Sat/Sun routine of hitting my local wing place, ordering a pitcher & large order of wings. This particular wing place plays all 80's music. It's fucking great! I can sit here all day and listen to this stuff. Even the stuff that I don't love I can still appreciate.. It makes me sad for the music of the last decade and then some.. that is all.

with ya vain. so many great 80's tunes were the soundtrack to our lives, they were awesome times. in hindsight, even some of the ones i thought were crap at the time are actually really good songs. it was also the decade of the one hit wonder. a personal fave; 'voices carry' by till tuesday. great great song.

I was listening to some Scorpions on YouTube and I was reading the comments. Kids were posting how great 80's music was and how they wish they were teenagers in the 80's. I was thinking I entered high school in 1980 and went through college in that decade. I wouldn't change a thing and yes kids, you did miss out.

I've noticed the same kinds of posts on Youtube - kids saying they wished they'd grown up in the 80s! I guess they're exposed to so much of the music through video games - Guitar Hero especially. It really was a really great time to be young. I'm 40 and the 80s were just a different time - the TV shows, the clothes and the BIG friggin' hair!! Dear God, I'll always love women with big hair!!!

Looking back, I especially loved the freedom we had as teenagers to do what we wanted to - no hotel in Myrtle Beach is going to rent a room to five 16 year olds now-a-days!!! Especially when they show up with 3 cars loaded slap full of cases of beer!!! But back then, no problem.

And the music, the MUSIC!!! And the videos! Damn those were the days! It was all about Van Halen for me. And I wouldn't trade anything for all the times we hung out at the lake, drinking some beers and playing Van Halen and Eat 'Em and Smile through the system in my Camaro. Good times, good times.

I spent the evening today with my best friend and his wife - he's been my best friend for 28 years and they've been together for 22 years. And of course the conversation came around to the 80s, and "you remember when...". Yes, I do remember when. And the kids today are definitely missing out.

In the 1980's if you stayed home with mom and dad after you graduated from high school it was shameful. Those guys were the losers. So the whole teen mindset was independence and individualism. Of course you could go to a state school and work your way through college with no scholarships or parental help. Kids worked harder than they do now. I don't remember people being so fat either. So laziness has creeped in and you aren't going to get 80's caliber bands with a bunch of lazy fat fucks. Also, computers and game consoles have killed creativity. Kids play endless hours in a matrix invented by someone else without creating their own stuff. We have gone from giving the kids some tools and then letting tinker with them to compete micromanagement and conformity.

So there is no passionate drive to be your own person and get out on your own and conquer the world. Whether it was to go onto college or do something less mainstream like be in a rock and roll band. Either way you had to have lots of drive and passion which seems to be missing now.

So true. You graduate from high school & the clock starts ticking fast. Staying at 'home' for 1-2 years after high school was bad, but accepted if you were going to school full time.

In hindsight, I should have stayed at home another year or 2 and saved up some money. Was so nice not having to pay any rent or utilities and always having food in the fridge. But then again, having drunken poker parties every FRI & SAT night and smoking in my apartment was pretty damn cool.

One of the Indian Casinos near me used to only play 80's music. We would go to drink & play blackjack. Even shit like Cindi Lauper was fun to hear. The 80's was all about having fun. Whether you were in to metal, pop, new wave, rap, etc. No matter the style of music, it was all about having a good time & enjoying yourself. Something bad happened and the 90's was all about being pissed off, then the 00's were all about being sad. Music like that is good for a time, but has no real staying power because people don't want to stay pissed or sad forever.

And I always wanted to fuck the brains out of the little brunette from The Bangles.

You had all the violence and protests of the 1960's. You had the Vietnam War and the horrible economy of the 1970's. There was no war in the 1980's and the economy was being boosted by the personal computer revolution. Even with the corruption and massive spending of the Reagan Administration we we had turned our attitude around. We were making things again and it was new technology and it was changing the world and it was guys tinkering in garages doing it. That was an empowering illusion.

I think who killed the 80's were the people who couldn't stand to see Americans being empowered again. The same fucks who outsourced our industry. Then in the 90's you started hearing 80's bashing, the decade of greed and all that shit. I'm sorry but there was more greed in the 90's and the early 00's than in the 80's. People issuing loans that shouldn't have been to people who were building too much house. It was toys toys toys. It was a big orgy and it wasn't even fun. The 80's were fun. Nobody was thinking about healthcare then either. The price gouging hadn't started yet. I look back at what my insurance was then and it was so cheap. When I heard Obamacare was going to allow kids to stay on their parents insurance until their mid 20's I went holy fuck, now the government is selling the laziness. Now we have government mandated free loading on mom and dad and people think this is some kind of solution.

The country went downhill fast as soon as a Bush got the oval office. Then all that global economy and free trade shit started to fly along with the wars again. I think Clinton and Obama are George Bush's adopted sons.

It was always better to have a college experience away from home. I had friends who's family couldn't afford college and they didn't have any real great scholarships so they would work in Alaska the summer and then work a eventing job while in school. I think the biggest disservice is the tuition price gouging. Then the student loan scam. It's baffles me that people let them get away with that shit. A few decades back states made sure college was affordable to everyone and you could get through without racking up any debt. Nobody should go into debt to get a fucking bachelors degree.

People in the US used to spend at LEAST one year over seas before they Graduated. Now....it is people like Rush Limbaugh that educate the american public.

That dipshit has not lived one whit with other people. Selfish.

We used to have a great tradition of education. Sold on a boat.....now.

'Say Grandpa, what was life like in the 1980s.......?'

'Well, Wham & Duran Duran were the biggest bands in the world; everyone had big - and I mean BIG - hair; Madonna hadn't shown the world her tits yet; and no one knew that George Michael was gay (except his boyfriend[s]). The internet hadn't been invented, mobile phones were for self-important pricks, and if you wanted to go somewhere with your friends you actually had to plan it IN ADVANCE. Porn was a lot hairier, rap was a lot friendlier, and no-one knew where the fuck Afghanistan was. We had yet to suffer Will Smith, but sadly Hollywood was obsessed with putting Kevin Costner and Michael Douglas in movies. Some welder chick donned a leotard part-time; Patrick Swayze had the time of his life before becoming a ghost, and Steve Martin was funny. Action movies didn't have to be ethically deep to be worthwhile, it was OK to call chicks 'baby' or 'sweet-heart' (although you still had to pretend to be interested in them in order to get anywhere - some things are timeless.) Reality TV was yet to clutter up our lives with fetid morons, Paris Hilton was a wank away from never existing and OJ was a national hero - it was a different time, my son, and different time.....'

The one really cool thing about the 80's was the endless pussy.

I've stopped using an ink pen whenever I make a list of the chicks I've boned, 'cause I always screw up the list and forget a few....and all of them are usually from the 80's.
Like the rich Jewish chick with the hook-nose that I fucked so me and my friends would have beer money...
....or the fat chick I ended up fucking in the parking lot at the Guns'N'Roses show because I was $10 shy of getting the really cool concert shirt, the one that said 'GET IN THE RING, MOTHERFUCKER' on the back.

My first car was a rusted piece of shit Capri, and the backseat was a non-stop parade of drunk/stoned judgement-impaired chicks. By the end of my sophomore year, the collective stench of weed, stale beer, and random pussy got so unbearable that I couldn't even drive the motherfucker unless the windows were rolled down....even in the rain.
I hated the smell, but I loved how it got there...I still miss that car....

I was alot less discriminating back then...I just took the good with the bad. I figured as long as they had a vagina we could always work out some kind of arrangement.

The 80's were good times......damn good times!
(oh yeah....the music wasn't half bad either)

We used to have a great tradition of education. Sold on a boat.....now.
That's what I did. I spent two semesters over seas. One of our neighbors is Swiss and when their son graduated from high school they sent him off on a trip to several countries before he went to college. I think that is a good thing. You need a break and you really need to live your life some at 18 and 19. People do need to get out and get around before they hunker into a career.

Everyone had cool cars in high school. A lot of kids drove old Porsches and then some drove those cool little British sports cars. My girlfriend had one of those little Fiat convertibles. Then you had the muscle cars. GTO's, Chargers, lot's of Cameros. The kid next door scored a 69 Charger for $500. We would help each other with our cars. It needed a new paint job but the car was in pretty good shape beyond that. I can't believe what people pay for them now. Those cars really weren't built that great. Another friend had a Porsche Targa. That was a great car and actually easy to work on.

In the 80's the big hair was on her head. In the 70's the big hair was between her legs.

Every time I listen to the Bangles & she starts singing, a beast is awakened in me nether regions...

She had the looks, the body & a sultry AND sweet voice, what are the fuckin' odds?

A rape like shag would be in order... SIEG HEIL, motherfuckers!

I had very little money in high school. And my daily allotment would be spent in the morning on a pack of smokes for the day & a Nestle Quik. I would save $1.35 to buy a Pepsi & bag of peanut M&M's during the day (or Funyons). If I was a little motivated, I would bum a quarter here & a quarter there from girls and be able to have a couple bucks by lunchtime to buy nachos or something.

One Friday Motley Crue was playing that night at the Sports Arena. Before school me & a buddy wanted to go but neither had any money. We decided to bum all day from the girls to see how close we could come to ticket price of $17.50.

I'd ask a girl for a buck or so "for lunch" with my sad puppy dog eyes. Worked every girl throughout the day. Me & my buddy met up after last period. We both had mooched enough for a ticket....and I even had enough for a t-shirt & a couple beers.

    Good times.

*always playfully flirt innocently with the fat, ugly, or homely girls. It makes them feel good and when you need to bum a couple dollars they are more than willing to kick in. Seems they always have money too. Plus, they are the ones telling their hot friends what a sweetheart you are. And that helps to get the poon later on.
