Unhappy Boston's Brad Delp, dead at 55

Boston lead singer Brad Delp dies at 55

    March 9, 2007

ATKINSON, N.H. --Brad Delp, the lead singer for the band Boston, was found dead Friday in his home in southern New Hampshire. He was 55. Atkinson police responded to a call for help at 1:20 p.m. and found Delp dead. Police Lt. William Baldwin said in a statement the death was "untimely" and that there was no indication of foul play.

Delp apparently was alone at the time of his death, Baldwin said.

The cause of his death remained under investigation by the Atkinson police and the New Hampshire Medical Examiner's office. Police said an incident report would not be available until Monday.

Delp sang vocals on Boston's 1976 hits "More than a Feeling" and "Longtime." He also sang on Boston's most recent album, "Corporate America," released in 2002.

He joined the band in the early 1970s after meeting Tom Scholz, an MIT student interested in experimental methods of recording music, according to the group's official Web site. The band enjoyed its greatest success and influence during its first decade.

The band's last appearance was in November 2006 at Boston's Symphony Hall.

On Friday night, the Web site was taken down and replaced with the statement: "We just lost the nicest guy in rock and roll."

A call to the Swampscott, Mass., home of Boston guitarist Barry Goudreau was not immediately returned Friday night.

Son of a bitch that sucks ! God knows Boston was short on output, averaging one album every 8 years or so, but at least the first three were legitimate classics.

They'll be getting heavy rotation in FORD Country this weekend.

    Goodbye Brad

If I said what's on my mind
    You'd turn and walk away
Disappearing way back in your dreams
It's so hard to be unkind
    So easy just to say
That everything is just the way it seems

    You look up at me
And somewhere in your mind you see
    A man I'll never be

If only I could find a way
I'd feel like I'm the man you believe I am
It's getting harder every day for me
To hide behind this dream you see
    A man I'll never be

    I can't get any stronger
    I can't climb any higher
You'll never know just how hard I've tried
    Cry a little longer
    And hold a little tighter
    Emotions can't be satisfied

    You look up at me
And somewhere in your mind you see
    A man I'll never be

If only I could find a way
I'd feel like I'm the man you believe I am
It's getting harder every day for me
To hide behind this dream you see
    A man I'll never be

It sure does! Gosh was I shocked when I saw the thread title!

He was the only original band member to stick it out onto Third Stage besides founding member Tom Scholz.

FORD, glad to hear someone else appreciated "Third Stage." People who gave up on that album did so because the rest of the original lineup had split.

Rock n Roll takes alot out of a person it seems....

And it should be considered a curse to jam with Eric Clapton....

Lots of rockers go early it seems, but at least they all spend their lives doing what they love doing, so the fufillment factor is there..

Great singer! One of the greatest voices of Classic and pure Rock and Roll. Always remembered by his "More than a Feelin". For years, this album was an all time #1 and #2.

Wow, what a tradgic end to a great band.
It would be near impossible to replace Brad's vocals. They make the band and the music so reconisable.
I thought Third Stage was a great album.(just for the record)

Saw Brad at The Gorge 10 years ago. He couldn't hit the high notes, but was impressive nonetheless. Sholtzy had busted his ankle and was hobbling around onstage. Killer show all around.

    RIP Brad.

Boy that's so odd because today I found my original Boston cassette that I hadn't seen in like 20 years.
So, for no logical reason I put it in to see what it sounded like.

Like a 20 yr old commercially made epic cassette from the 70's that breaks up (remember the dolby logo) I also had that Rockman with the headphone output that you could plug your guitar into anything and sound like Tom Scholz .

But anyway...was their debut the record holding debut for a rock album or not? If not it's close if I remember correctly.

I saw him a few years ago w/ Beatlejuice and chatted with him after the show. Sweetheart of a guy.

    This is sad.

    No word yet.

I know the guy had been a Vegan for decades, so I assumed he was fairly health conscious. Not sure what his drug intake was, though obviously the guy who sang "Smokin'" and the line "I don't want to doubt you, I wanna make you high" must have done his share of herb back in the day.

Just a sad day either way. 55 is way too young

I don't know what year this clip is from, but it is obviously pretty recent. The thing with Delp was although he might not could hit the super high notes he once could, his vocal tone was still the same. Some singers lose range and tone as they get older, but not Brad, and this clip proves that.

God....I've spent many a night driving around listening to those old Boston albums. They were my chill out music. I'm really saddened by the loss of Brad Delp....never heard anyone come close to sounding like him.

According to the local news... police suspected foul play.

I loved the old Boston albums, and like early VH it was fun music to listen to.

Why can't we have music like that again? Everyone was smiling and having a good time, instead of this crap we have now.

Today's music makes me want to kill myself, or at least torture the elderly and small animals.

wow. defintely a shock when i read that. i suppose i can't call myself a diehard fan since i don't go too far past the second album but i nonetheless he was a great singer and wrote some of the best songs of the late 70's with tom. they were scheduled to play at rockfest this year up in chipawa falls...guess that's not happening...i feel bad for tom.

He was truly one of a kind. There won't be another Boston album. Not in 8 years, not ever. And that clip was from 2004 when they were touring behind their last album "Corporate America".

I am deeply saddened and troubled by this announcement. I have always loved the genius of Boston.

In another thread I would tell you how Boston is tied for first with Van Halen as my all time favorite band, and why.

But now, I'm feeling pretty blue.

    God bless the Delp family.

A true rock hero has passed.

Really bad news. I didn't know anything about it, but I shit you not, I was listening to the Boston album on the way to work tonight. Brad was definitely one of rock and roll's greatest singers ever, and he'll be sadly missed.

    Rest easy, dude.

    This is a damn shame.

    I wonder how it happened.

    This is terrible news.
Brad was a huge talent, a giant of a singer.
My thoughts are with his family.

According to what's been released so far, there was just a "call for help" and police showed up to find him dead. No immediate cause and he was in "relative good health".

Of course, that doesn't really mean anything.

    Rest In Peace Brad ...

I just bought the 2 remastered cd's about a month ago and I played the shit outta them.

I mean, "Rock 'N Roll Band", "Smokin", "Don't Look Back", "Long Time", shit, those tunes will live forever.

This news just plain sucks ...

I hope he is at rest and in a better place !

I'm forced to wonder what the future of Boston will be...admittedly, they did "Walk On" without him, but even so he was on the tour singing with that Cosmo guy, so...

I don't think they could ever replace him.

    That sucks.

Boston was one of my fave bands of all time.

i don't know what to say. Deeply saddened.

    RIP Brad, you'll be missed.
