Bernie Marsden death: Whitesnake guitarist dies at 72

British musician dies ‘peacefully’ surrounded by family

    Mike Bedigan

Guitarist Bernie Marsden, who performed with British rock group Whitesnake in the 1970s and 80s has died at the age of 72, his family has announced.

The British musician died “peacefully” on Thursday surrounded by his wife and daughters.

Along with David Coverdale, Marsden co-founded Whitesnake and co-wrote hits including Here I Go Again and Fool For Your Loving, before going on to enjoy a solo career.

People make fun of Whitesnake...but the original band before the Tawny Kitaen years was actually a really good blues/rock outfit, with a lot of Deep Purple spirit. (Not as good as the Dio-RAINBOW, though.)

Marsden did a track with Coverdale a few years ago (for Marsden's solo LP) that sounded a lot like early Whitesnake.

    They were okay pre-Sykes.

I bought that multi-cd set Box of Snakes (I think it was called Little Box 'o' Snakes) thing off of Amazon a few years ago. I think it came out in 2011...maybe 2013...and it had all the pre-Geffen/pre-Slide It In Whitesnake albums plus some extras. I got it brand new and pretty cheap on a whim. I think I had only heard the Saints And Sinners album outside of the Geffen ones in the 1980's, so I figured what the hell?

The pre-Sykes stuff/pre-Slide It In stuff was as Rikk said, in that they were a good, straight-up hard blues rock outfit. I wouldn't say that Marsden/Moody era stuff was astounding or exceptional, but it was good rock and roll...and there's nothing wrong with that.
