    Steel Panther

    BY ESTHER ROGERS / 11 JUL 2013

Do you like heavy metal? Big hair? Profanities? Regardless of your preference for the aforementioned, you will like Steel Panther. And it’s not for their artisanally crafted hair metal outfits, or their mind-blowing melodies and guitar riffs, or even their profaned lyrical poetry. It’s the fact that Steel Panther know how to put on a damn good show that will have even the most conservative middle-aged mom wearing five different types of animal print and flashing her lady parts at the band.

If you have never heard of Steel Panther, it’s about high time you did. The band is a regular at the House of Blues on both the Sunset and Vegas Strips, and they have played across the country since the birth of the Panther in April 2008. They have spread their talents – among other things – across the pond, playing sold out shows on a European and Australian Tour in 2012. They even toured with the biggest names in metal, including Mötley Crüe, Guns N’ Roses, and Def Leppard, and shared the stage with many a legend.

But now, lead singer Michael Starr and his glam metal band mates are well on their way to legend-dom in their own right, having garnered quite the cult following; many devoted fans return to their packed shows week after week. Starr is backed by lead guitarist Satchel, bassist Lexxi Foxx (“The extra “X” is for extra SEX!”), and drummer Stix Zadinia. They first gained popularity on the Sunset Strip in the early 2000s under the name of Metal Shop, which was then changed to Metal Skool before settling on the more badass Steel Panther. They covered and parodied other famous bands while writing their own music, and in 2008 they released their first major record label album, Feel the Steel. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Comedy chart, and featured the single “Community Property”. This was followed by Balls Out in 2011, which debuted at No. 1 on the UK iTunes Rock chart, and No. 4 on its American counterpart.

The band’s lyrics are crude. They sing about easy girls, ugly girls, hot girls, stripper girls, drugs, STDs, philandering, and rock n’ roll. They don’t shy away from terms like goo, balls, camel toe, cottage cheese, baby gravy, summer sausage, Dirty Sanchez… the list goes on. But boy do they know how to marry their lyrics to incredibly catchy and epic tunes. You don’t even have to care for metal to rock out at their concerts, because it’s all about having a good time. After a few drinks, even the biggest Norah Jones fan will be screaming out the lyrics “Stripper girl/ Heaven sent, take one look and I pitch a tent.” And yes, that song is called “Stripper Girl” and it’s about a stripper.

The boys have a sack-full of stage presence, and they know how to get the crowd going. It also helps to throw out free giant foam hands inspired by their song “The Shocker”. Wondering what it is? The lyrics go “Two in the pink and one in the stink/ That’s called the shocker.” Got the image in your head? Good. It will never go away.

But joking aside, all four members are seriously good musicians. Starr is a talented singer with an amazing rock scream, while Satchel plays a mean guitar riff. Stix is the formidable backbone of the band with his killer drum beats, and Lexxi continues to wow with his pretty metrosexual looks, while strumming the odd bass note – he’s usually more interested in looking at himself in a handheld mirror with great conviction.

Are you starting to feel the itch? Are you longing to feel the Steel for yourself? Well lucky you, Steel Panther will be playing at the House of Blues Las Vegas and Sunset Strip all July. Be ready to see girls pulled up on stage to flash their assets, and a whole lot of hair whipping. It’s the stuff rock legends are made of.

And now, a selection of our favorite lyrical stylings:

“My heart belongs to you/ There ain’t nothing that I wouldn’t do/ My heart belongs to you/ But my dong is community property” – Community Property

“I can see it in your eyes/ Cause you’re looking at me like I’m a side of fries” – Fat Girl

“Hair on your nipples, zits on your box/ In Oklahoma City you’re considered a fox” – Girl from Oklahoma

“Stripper girl/ Heaven sent, take one look and I pitch a tent” – Stripper Girl

“If you wanna be like Tiger Woods/ Filling all the divots in the neighborhood/ Don’t think about those three foot putts/ And cover your tracks when you’re banging them sluts” – Just Like Tiger Woods

“Two in the pink and one in the stink/ That’s called the shocker” – The Shocker

    - Esther Rogers

I'm not doubting that Steel Panther makes some kick-ass rock tunes, it's just that I hate the message it gives out about 1980s rock music. Now we all know it's a parody band and I have no problem with that, but is that really what rock n' roll has become? absolutely nothing but a joke?

And you might think I'm a big motherfucking hypocrite for loving Spinal Tap's music and criticizing Steel Panther's material, but the key difference is that rock was still alive for many more years after Spinal Tap came out.

Now, rock n roll is on the verge of complete non-existence and a parody band is one of the few closest things to the glory days that the 2010's has.

On a UK arena tour they blew Motley Crue and Def Leppard off the stage.

They are pulling much bigger crowds as a headliner than 95% of the 80s bands that are still playing.

    http://1063thebuzz.com/party-like-to...-panther-nsfw/

The latest video from Steel Panther, the comedic ’80s metal/hard rock tribute band, is here and is in no way safe for you to watch while at work. The song and video, called “Party Like Tomorrow Is The End Of The World,” features plenty of the bands outrages lyrics plus several celebrity cameos, all while partying like it’s the end of the world.

The video features partial female nudity and a variety of drug use plus special appearances by Rob Riggle, Jackass star Steve-O, R.J. Mitte from Breaking Bad, porn star Ron Jeremy and MMA fighter Chuck Liddell.

The song/video is the first single from the band’s upcoming third studio album All You Can Eat, which is due out sometime in 2014.

When asked how they came up with the new album title singer Michael Star said “We feel like STEEL PANTHER is like a buffet. You know what I mean?! There’s a little bit of everything for everybody. And you can have as much of us as you want.”

The bands second album, Balls Out, debuted at number 40 on the Billboard charts when it was released in 2011 selling nearly 12,000 copies.

Drummer Stix Zadinia stated “If you liked [2009's] ‘Feel The Steel’ and [2011's] ‘Balls Out’, you will love this record. It is more heavy metal songs that are hooky and great and fun and make you want to rock and make you want to have a good time and party. Also, there is a lot of riffage on this album that I think anybody who has ever questioned this band — ‘Oh, those guys wear spandex and it is 2000-whatever’ — these songs are going to put all of that to rest.”

Steel Panther may seem like a big joke to some people but the band insist that while comedy is a part of their persona, they’re all about the music.

Zadinia said “Listen to our record and tell us that our songs aren’t better than most of the bands out there. How funny is that? At the end of the day, it comes down to the songs. I think our songs — without sounding egotistical — I think our songs are great. When you hear the hooks in our songs, you hear the playing and you hear the vocals, you throw that up against any band in any era, and I think it stands up.”

Now I had a chance to see these guys at the House of Blues in Dallas earlier this year and if you think the video is crazy, you should have been at the show. Besides their catchy and humorous lyrics the band uses the time in between songs to joke and argue with each other plus they know how to interact with the crowd, even bringing just about every woman in the room onstage for a chance to show the audience their love puppies. And I do believe the lead singer took a girl he had just met backstage halfway thru their set to do the do. It was defiantly one of the best shows I’ve ever been to.

The 'Glory Hole' riff reminds me (admitedly a non-guitar player) of Nuno Bettencourt.......

Saw them again last night at a sold out show at the HOB in Chicago.

First off, fuck you HOB. Your venue sucks, it was too crowded and $11 for a beer? Also, if you're charging that much, how can you justify a non-hd feed of the show to your TVs?

Second, it was the same show that I saw in January (minus a few songs and absolutely no covers this time). Jokes and meter exactly the same. They pull it off naturally, though. These guys are well rehearsed and trained - both musically and in improv/sketch.

First time for a couple of people in my group. They were in tears due to laughter. Loved the music, too.

Here's a new tune they played:

I don't remember what HOB Cleveland charges for a beer. Maybe $8. Better to catch a buzz around the corner at Flannery's, and skip out on your food tab while you're there.

It would be about $7.50 here and that is bad enough.

I guess in the US especially a lot of people drive so only have 1 or 2 beers so they want to skin them on that.

I was at the Sabbath gig at Glasgow Hydro last Monday. A pint of Fosters was £4.50 I think (possibly £4), which is about $7.00-7.50.

Have to say it was a good pint, if you like those kind of lagers - better than I regularly have elsewhere in so-called proper bars.

As for whether it was worth it - well, I didn't mind paying it. With accommodation / travel and ticket costs the gig was already tipping into the £250 range ...

I didn't go to Sabbath after seeing some horrendous YouTubes of early in the tour.

They were actually very good in Glasgow by all reports which makes me wonder if Ozzy is now using backing tapes...

They were actually pretty damn good, and Ozzy was miles better than I expected.

I don't think it was backing tapes!

A guy I was at the gig with shot a minute or so of one song, and when we listened back later it was not at all a good representation of what we heard - so I guess there's either a lot of variability in that kind of footage (depending on where you are positioned and how that affects things like vocals etc) or actually being there at the gig just compensates for flaws in the performance in ways that are not even apparent.

Ozzy's performance was pretty good, but on the vid clip it didn't sound so strong.

Sharon was photographed distraught and in tears last week leaving a function so maybe she had just found out Ozzy was off the booze and drugs and thinking for himself...

Glory Hole, huh? Nope, nothing the could possibly connote anything gay there. And playing guitar in crappy bondage leather and spandex? Nothing gay abut that!

Let us know if they play any new tunes (and if they're any good).

From the two I've heard so far - 'The Burden of Being Wonderful' and 'Party Like Tomorrow Is the End of The World' - I sense that they may have toned the jokes down.......

They played a few and as you say they seemed a little tamer.

The place was sold out and jumping and the audience loved them.

I was much less happy. For a while they have been doing the taped backing vocals thing but now for a few songs they then synced that with the video to the song.

This is a really fucking horrible idea.

There is a fine line between stupid and clever. For me making a joke of the miming thing doesn't work at all. I think the guitar, bass and drums were probably live but when you have video in the background slightly out of time it becomes hugely distracting wondering is the video out of time or is their miming out of time.

I had to fuck off home as I have an insanely early work thing tomorrow so I didn't get a chance to raise it with them.

I'm sure they would have ignored me anyhow as few other people seemed to care too much.

Maybe I'm just grumpy because of the exploitative bar prices at the place which always piss me off, I think I spent about $80 in 2 hours which is irritating.
