Can't remember seeing a thread about this before and my impression is that Americans in particular are obsessed with it. Post your interesting sport trivia here.
My favorite is that in 1891 basketball was invented. 15 years later in 1906 someone came up with the idea to cut a hole in the bottom of the hoop so that you didn't need to climb a ladder or prod it with a long stick to get the ball down each time someone scored.
