rock n roll dork - I love almost everything rock n roll, and while growing up, I was one of the weird few in my small hometown who had long hair, wore my metal band patched jean jacket, read crazy philosophical books, took adavanced languages, played guitar (when I should have been dating) and was also in accellerated and college bound classes with the uppity yuppies of the day. I was so socially out of place in those classes and that town. I was harrassed a lot by the so-called "in crowd." Those kids were worried about how they looked to each other. I was interested in whatever hot book was coming out, what records were coming out that week, trying to learn different styles on guitar and where I was going to score a quarter or a bottle of booze for the weekend.
But I made my own way and pretty much lived and breathed rock n roll and the lifestyle from hs graduation in 86 until about 2007 or so. So being the big rock n roll fan I am and also still being somewhat of a nerd I came up with rocknrolldork around 2002 or so.
I learned to surf off of Newport Beach, CA. Never surfed Santa Cruz. I imagine a thick wet suit is mandatory. Any shark problems?Pronounced zah-ZOO.
Surfing nickname bestowed upon me in high school around 1972 in Santa Cruz, Ca. It's a reference to the Flintstones cartoon character the Great Gazoo. Given the times/place and the prevalence of potheads in the bay area surfing culture the name was bastardized to ZahZoo... dude.
I earned this from my antics of getting major air when kicking out (exiting) a wave and then striking silly poses during those couple of seconds when you feel weightless before splash down. I developed this to an art... motivated somewhere between boredom and creativity. The key was to find a major speed section of the wave break to gain enough momentum so that you can pull a huge bottom turn right back into the wave... hit it head on when it's just about straight up vertical. Depending up wave size and speed you could hit 5-15 feet airborne. We'd have little competition among ourselves and even give moves names like the Aladin, Nut cruncher, Flail & Flop... (refer to notes on potheads above...)
That's some serious neighborhood watch drama right there - I try to stay out of it.
Oh yeah, wet suits were required. You could develop hypothermia in 30 minutes or less, even in the summer.
No major shark issues... they've definitely been sighted there much more in the last 10-15 years due due to increases in the sea otter and seal populations. But last I read there had only been 6 confirmed shark attacks in the Santa Cruz area dating back to 1926.
