I'm gonna check out FYE at the local mall on the 7th to see of they have it. There's also a K-Mart in that mall and a Walmart 5 minutes down the road.

I have a Target 5 minutes away. If that fails, Best Buy is up the road a little ways.

Does anyone find it interesting that the vinyl version is 2 LPs? For 13 tunes.

I find Target and Walmart to be bad music options because they edit their music selection. God forbid Dave drops an f-bomb and they replace it with some [explitive deleted] bullshit.

Is Target doing that shit now too?

I never even considered WalFart for music after they censored the cover of Nirvana's album way back in the 1990's, and made them change the song "Rape Me" to something really stupid like "Wake Me" or whatever.

Ironically the song was more about corporations fucking around with music than it was the actual sexual violation of women.

I will use Best Buy. I hate Target. They are just a pretentious version of Walmart, yet still crap just less of it. And Walmart I don't mind so much the store, it's the customers I can't stand. So I'll cruise into Best Buy, snag the cd & spend a few checking out TV's or computers as well. Always fun to window shop.

Crap, I'm completely confused by the choices Walmart is offering. You have three options:

    1. $11.88 - CD alone
    2. $13.88 - CD/DVD
    3. $19.88 - CD/T Shirt

Does this mean that option #3. gives you the CD alone, plus a shirt? Or does this mean you get the CD, the shirt AND the DVD?

They don't put a sticker on it. They just remove the PARENTAL ADVISEMENT from the cover art. It's pretty stupid. These are "family friendly" stores. Which is funny considering the clientel they attract.

Not really - I find it good, though, that it could possibly be two albums of 35mins or so each. That would be like two old CVH albums.

It could just be to allow for more spaces between the grooves, so to speak. It's common with contemporary vinyl releases to be doubles, especially when CDs can be 70 min+. All the CVH albums were made before CD (or in the case of 1984, wasn't released initially on CD, so recorded / mastered with the limitations of vinyl in mind - anything over 35 mins, and the grooves have to be cut closer, and something gets lost sonically).

Could depend on length of the tunes on the album, though - 'Tattoo' is the single, and sometimes you'd say the single is usually one of the shorter tracks on any album by any band for radio-play purposes - but it's nearly 5 mins long. Those first six albums were all around 33-36 mins (Van Halen I the longest ... at a mere 35:13 mins, but again, that was common in pre-CD days).

The only longer songs than 'Tattoo' they recorded in the 6-pack are: 'Cradle Will Rock', 'Fools', and 'Mean Street'. Maybe it will be an album of longer cuts. MWM and CGTSNM are both longer, too - so maybe the trend is towards slightly longer tunes now.

I checked out the link ... looks like Option 3 is CD & T-shirt only, no DVD.

Great post Scraps. I was thinking the same way about this being like 2 of the six-pack with regard to length.
I also understand the fidelity issue, I'm not sure how the fidelity is saved if there's any digital anything in the processing especially with distorted guitar since the warmth of the tone is killed digitally.
There used to be verbal jousts on this site about mp3 versus flac, so I'm sure many people here know the difference.
I haven't bought vinyl in years, but I'm guessing the resurgence in its popularity's got something to do with fidelity.

I've certainly bought the occasional vinyl album in recent years - the packaging is just so much better, and the size of the thing as you hold it in your hands, just reminds me of all those countless hours spent looking at album sleeves, record labels, the etchings in the run-off grooves (!!) for clues to why this thing I was listening to - whatever it was - was like a magic charm.

But my turntable and hi-fi set-up is probably not the best, and the belt has just gone on the deck. I got it very cheap, though, from an online store in the UK that reconditions old hi-fi equipment (probably a guy in his basement), but it had clearly been sitting in somebody's garage for a while!! Signs of rust. But, the sound still damn well leaps out at you on the vinyl.

I don't know the how or why of it - you'd probably need to be a physicist or something to explain to me why it sounds better. But it just does.

The Cafe Wha version of She's the Woman was under 3 mins though.

The retail companies don't edit anything... the record label and bands have to agree to put out alternate versions of the original material before it even hits a shelf.

As creative as anyone wants to be... the FCC laws are what drives record companies and artists to produce "radio friendly" versions of their material. Most large corporations do have values that keeps them out of hot water with customers... But neither Walmart or Target force this stuff... the marketing people at the labels do. They want to sell to everyone... so they package things the retailers find palatable.

If Walmart was as bad as some of you make it to be... why is it I can walk in there and buy any season of Deadwood in all it's over-cussed, murdering with ho's and blow jobs that would make any cocksucker blush..?

Can't say if it's Walmart or the label... odds are number 3 is just the CD & shirt. Then you gotta double dip for another unit... for CD + DVD. You know how it goes in business... Everybody wants some...

Talking of different formats what's this bullshit released the week after?

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Different-Ki...6727759&sr=8-3

Different Kind of Truth: Deluxe Edition (Shm-CD) by Van Halen (Audio CD - 2012) - Import
    Buy new: £40.85

    $60 fucking bucks?

I'd never even heard of Super High Material CD but it sounds like a sting to me. Digital is digital, 1s and 0s are 1s and 0s.

I bet it's like blind tests of gold cable connectors, no one can tell the difference.

    Not really, bro.....

CD's capture a snapshot, for lack of a better word, of the music at a rate of 44,100 snapshots a minute......it's done to a precision rate of 16 bits. So you only have so much space to capture the sound....it's not infinite. What can't be fit into those spaces is cut, clipped, compressed, or ignored altogether.

Analog sound is the way we hear things, so it's a natural sound for humans......records have a groove cut into them that mimics the actual waveform that we hear.

The difference would be storing your personal belongs in a weather tight climate controlled building as opposed to a shed that has a leaky roof and holes in the walls.......it'll get the job done but you'll lose some of your belongings in the process.

Well, I guess I'll be purchasing this thing in at least 3 formats: The t-shirt package, the CD/DVD and naturally, the vinyl edition. What the hell, I haven't bought an album of new material in a few of years, since all I tend to get these days are archived boxed sets and reissues of albums I bought 10, 20 or 30 years ago anyway.

Will you be able to buy the Deluxe version of ADKOT in stores at release date?

    Hi all -
Sorry if this is in another post - But want confirmation that the deluxe version will be sold on release date internationally? as want to walk into a store to get the album on our release date Feb 3 2012 (as live in New Zealand and should be in line with the Australia release date) and would like to know if need to pre order deluxe from web and suffer through standard version for a couple of weeks (as it would arrive a week or so here after US release date)

In theory we should not be able to distinguish any distortions/etc in a recording done at 44kHz/16bits.

First let me delve into your statement regarding samplerate/precision

    44,100 snapshots per SECOND.

Times 16 bits. What exactly is the "Bit depth" anyhow? You know this but many do not. It's basically the number values each sample can have. 1 sample is 1/44100th of a second; infinitesimal. That sample could have 65,536 possible values in total, but inreality it's gotta account for phase, so 32,767 either way.

Sounds like a lot, it is a lot... then there's 24-bit precision. It's safe to say that whatever the exact level/value for any particular sample will be recorded EXACTLY.

With that having been said, let's just go ahead and say that the recording should be fucking PERFECT. 44,100hz samplerate translates to an effective frequency range of 0-22,050 hz and for the sake of argument let's just say that encompasses the entire audible range of the human ear and then some.

    NOW digest this motherfuckers!

    http://www.roger-russell.com/truth/truth.htm#cd

In a nutshell, most cd players have shit for dac's and shit for filtering and the resulting audio image is shit. Anyone smart enough to possess a high-quality cd player with high resolution filtering SHOULD get much better imaging from the same source material..

But since we don't always own $8,000 digital-analog converters/filters, it's easier to buy turntables and enjoy analogue audio with all the nuances.

Thats anothing thing.. how many of us own peice of shit amplifiers/home theater systems? Most of these can barely handle the transients let alone sustained power required to listen to van halen at it's proper ear-bleeding level...

Getting rambly now, better stop. Check out the article and the rest of his site; extremely cool stuff and interesting stories from an engineer of a legendary audio and speaker manufacturer.

I just ordered this LP to add to my collection. Then went to Amazon.com to order the cd/dvd deluxe edition. Already pre-ordered itunes copy and probably will buy cd when it comes out that day as us Canadians (eh) won't get any of the US ordered stuff till later. 30 years for a hundred fifty bucks...? Definetly worth it.

I downloaded the single on iTunes and now if I try to preorder the album it says I'll have to rebut tattoo, anyone else have this problem? Not a biggie but why should I pay for it twice. I'm already gonna pick up the cd on release day too.

My fun budget is getting hit with this VH activity...

Bought the exclusive Kiwi version of Tattoo a day before the official release. Pre-ordered the Walmart CD + Shirt deal. Will most likely pick up the Deluxe edition CD + DVD locally when it's available...

My biggest dilemma is tour tickets... tough call... New set of golf clubs or a two hour show of Van Halen w/ Diamond Dave. Both offer an element of mixed fun and frustration. One for a couple of hours the other for a couple of years... Damn I hate making these value decisions with a limited budget!!!

Wow... that made my brain hurt.

I'll by the CD/DVD somewhere on release day and then wait for PBTHAL to do his vinyl rip of it.

This may already been mentioned here - I didn't read all the posts. Barnes and Noble will also carry the CD and CD+DVD at the stores and online.

Probably a stupid question but need help......

So... If I order ADKOT (Deluxe Version - $14.99) on iTunes, what am I actually getting? Is it just MP3's and videos of the downtown sessions? Or, are they sending me a hard copy CD and DVD?

I've never ordered a full album from iTunes so I'm not sure. I realize this is a basic question but I'm just not sure I'm 100% on what actually I'm getting in terms of hard copy and/or electronic copy.

    Allright... your input appreciated.

    Stay Frosty!

I could be wrong but I assume they allow you to download the music and send/mail you a DVD.
