Songs you originally liked because you thought it was somebody else singing them

I don't think a thread like this has been done in the House of Music before. So here's the idea....

Post a YouTube of a song you heard, and liked (or even hated, for that matter) because you thought it sounded like somebody else singing it.

Many of you may recall my frequent mentions of a band called the 77s. This is the song that got me interested in them in the first place, way back in 1982, because I thought at the time that it was a new single from Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. The lead vocals, harmonies, Byrds-like lead guitar, were all very reminiscent of what Petty was doing at the time. Of course this video wasn't on eMpTyV at the time either, or obviously I could have seen it wasn't them.....

(Yeah, I know this video reeks of early 80's cheezy production, but the song is still great)

12 years later, the 77's put this one out. I had the album when it was first released, so I knew who it was, but several of my friends thought this was the Stones when I played it on my car stereo. And it would easily have fit on Voodoo Lounge, which came out right about the same time.....

Me and a few million other people thought this was a Ringo song when it first came out. If the clip doesn't function, lemme know and I'll fix it when I get home from work.

I also liked America's "Horse With No Name" because I thought it was a Neil Young tune, but I'll be damned if I want to hear it again, let alone post it.

But this thread isn't all about the 77s. How many people thought this band's only US hit was either Genesis or a Phil Collins solo hit?

This was my favorite song for many years. I always thought it was Slayer. Imagine the shock I felt when I found out it was not.

Yep. I thought the same thing about both of those. And I still have a copy of "America's Greatest Hits" on vinyl somewhere, though I can't remember buying it, so it must have been my sister's originally, or something.

Especially when you play it backwards and it says "SATAN RAPES LITTLE BABY KOALA BEARS!!!"

Not that I thought it but remember that horrible rip-off band Kingdom Come......

They released the song without saying what the name of the band was, IIRC!

I first heard this while driving a truck with a crummy radio sometime in 1982 or 83. I really couldn't make out much of it, but I thought "How cool, Aerosmith covering Prince." A short while later that week, I found out it was Mitch Ryder from the Detroit Wheels. Wish I could find a good quality clip of the original video. You can see it 2nd below, but it's a truly ghastly copy. It featured the astonishingly well endowed Kitten Natividad.

For some reason, I used to think this was The Tubes (even though it sounds almost nothing like Fee Waybill). It wasn't 'til years later that I found out it was this dork.
Plus I've been in 3 different relationships with women named Leah, so this song kinda goes into remission for awhile, but it always comes back to haunt me. Like terminal herpes.......

I thought this was Freddie Mercury but then I remembered he was dead.

always thought this was something off "In through the out door", or "Coda", before I realized it was kind of a cheesey knock off the Zeppelin sound.

I'll be honest, a song in the late 80's or early 90's that sounded EXACTLY like ABBA. Wasn't them. I like ABBA cause I heard it everyday in moms car.....on her 8-track. LOL. I guess it was the same way she liked VH cause of me.

Looks kinda like Freddie had a child with Gary Cherone. Wonder who they used for a surrogate?

Seriously though, he really did capture that mid 70's Queen vibe fairly well.

And of course then there was the Duran Duran wannabe band...... (though this song was actually more tolerable than anything Duran Duran did in the second half of the 80's)

These guys wanted to be the Rolling Stones so bad, they somehow talked Jimmy Miller into producing their albums......

They should have called this one "You Can't Get Sympathy For Shining A Light"

I absolfuckinglutely love the Stones! It sounds more like THIS to me:

Which ironically is the Stones doing a Buddy Holley tune.

Even though the Stones originally covered that on their very first album, I thought their 1994 take on it actually sounded closer to the Grateful Dead's rendition......

Ever notice how much of Heart's "Barracuda" owes a debt to Led Zeppelin's "Achilles Last Stand?" For some reason, all of these vids except the static, studio track clips leave off the intro, which suggests the Zep song to the furthest point. As a result, it was difficult to find even a near-complete version, so forgive the tv show introduction on this one. And Nancy Wilson wasn't always the hottest woman in the band, back in the day.

Ann & Nancy never made any secret of the fact that they were huge Zeppelin fans. Their cover of "The Battle of Evermore" (as The Lovemongers) might have been the best thing they did outside of the original Heart lineup (certainly better than the late 80's Van Hagarized corporate cheese version of the band)

I thought Long Stick Goes Boom was an AC/DC song when I was little,

This song got me into Krokus though, they've got some good tunes.

Damn that video was god-awful. Makes me miss the 80's even less.
