I think someone thought that if the action of deleting, most of the history of the site that it would speed the reuniting of DLR with the Van Halen .

VH Links and DDLR both had huge post losses at different times as well. It's probably not unconnected to the fact that the fan sites lose money so you are inclined to choose the cheapest host possible.
Fingers crossed but hopefully with disk space being so much cheaper these days backups are probably being done better at all the sites now.
