Your Own, Personal David Lee Roth Mix-Tape

(FULL DISCLOSURE: OK, in all honesty, one of my co-workers failed to show up, so I'm stuck here at this desk filling in for the next few hours. Needless to say, I'm creating some time-killing mind exercises in order to pass through the boredom. Those of you in a similar situation are invited to join in.)

I'm fairly certain there are a handful of members here far too young to remember the joys of cassette taping. This was a technology that occurred before the invention of cell phones or the internet and arrived just about simultaneously with the advent of cable television. Here's the deal:

You have a 90 minute, high quality Maxell C-90 minute cassette tape (see below), of which you have recorded one side with a particularly terrific live bootleg ( VH, Stones, Led Zep, Replacements, Rush, whatever the fuck...), yet the other side is blank. Being of a thrifty mind, you decide to fill up the remaining 45 minutes with a random assortment of Dave Roth tracks. The collection is entirely up to your particular whims and attitude about flow. The titles are up to you, and can be as esoteric as you like (I'm probably one of the 4 assholes on this board that actually likes "Hammerhead Shark", so what do I know?). You have the entire VH/Roth catalog to choose from, but remember, you have to consider song length as you only have 45 minutes or so to work with.

As always, should you or any of your IM force be caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions. Good luck, Jim. This tape will self-destruct in five seconds. (If ya don't remember cassettes, you sure as shit aren't going to get that reference. )

Alright, here's mine. Bear in mind, I've never been a math wizard (even sober), so I figure that "Damn Good" will cut off somewhere near the beginning or middle.

    1. Light Up The Sky - 3:13
    2. D.O.A. - 4:09

I have one I made years ago from all the solo albums that's still really cool.....

    SIDE A:
    Don't Piss Me Off
    Just A Gigolo
    Tobacco Road
    Big Trouble
    Hina
    Sensible Shoes
    Drop In The Bucket
    Right Tool For The Job
    Wawazat

    SIDE B
    Mississippi Power
    Damn Good
    Coconut Grove
    Sunburn
    Black Sand
    Tell The Truth
    Experience
    Night Life
    Bad Habits
    Asi Es La Vida

I used to have Side B already cued up on the stereo so after work all I had to do was make a strong drink, twist one up, press play, and chill the fuck out.
Of all my cassettes, it's still one of my masterpieces.

In no particular order, other than what I'm coming up with after waaayyyy too many beers

    Tobacco Road
    Shy boy
    Coconut Grove
California Girls - the long form video version with all the talk before and the nonsense after
    Shoo Bop
Easy Street - easily Dave's best vocal performance EVER - especially if you're looking for his trademark screams
That's Life - "Hello, this is Dave. And I'd like to talk to you a little bit about...Life."
    DLR Band - Slam Dunk
DLR Band - Relentless - I may be half lit, but this freakin song is still hot as hell!
    DLR Band - Black Sand
    Sensible Shoes
I think this is just about 45 minutes..give or take.

    1) The DogTown Shuffle (love the chanting in the beginning and it has wicked groove to it)
    2) Big Trouble off of Eat 'Em And Smile (great song and classic Dave lyrics)
    3) Relentless (this song is smoking)
    4) Hear About It Later (fav Van Halen song)
    5) Hina (yes there are overlays of vocals going in and out all over Skyscraper, but this song I have always enjoyed...sweet tune)
    6) Blues remix with the Crossroads theme to it of the instrumental of the song Tell The Truth, would put this on repeat often
    7) Push Comes to Shove (my fav vocal performance of Roth of all time)
    8) Angel Eyes (why was this song never released, amazing Zeppelin vibe to it)
    9) DOA (the riff and attitude from rock and roll Valhalla)
    10) the Beatles cover of Just Seen A Face (highlight of harmonies) from the Skyscraper tour CD bootleg
    11) Little Guitars ( cool cool cool)
    12) Black Sand (even more cool, the ultimate chill out song next to Coconut Grove by Roth...when he goes up on "I heard the story many times..." later in the song is awesome)

Fuck Cassette Tapes! I hated those damn things back in the 80's and 90's. Especially when they would get caught in the gears of the player or worse, get tangled up inside the Cassette itself. If I want a mix, then I just cram my mp3 or PC with as much released and unrealeased =VH= and Roth solo as possible and put it on shuffle, or just play some =VH= and Roth solo on vinyl.

    Cool

I'm an asshole too. Love Hammerhead Shark, one of my favorites when the album first came out. A real low down gritty foot stomping ZZ Top style boogie. Great tune.

I actually DO have an actual old school cassette with some favorites, that were different from the rest

    1 Coconut Grove
    2 Real Go Getter ( 79th & Sunset )
    3 I've Just Seen A Face.( Milan, Italy '88 boot )
    4 Wake Up Little Suzie ( Italy '88 )
5 Ill Go Crazy ( James Brown cover from Italy '88, Fuckin love this one to death )
    6 Big Bad Bill
    7 Could This Be Magic
    8 Angel Eyes
    9 Light IN The Sky
    10 Black Sand
    11 Missisipii Power
    12 Ladies Night In Buffalo.
    13 Damn Good

Must of made this before Diamond Dave cd came out, otherwise there'd be something from it on there. The other side has the Night Life cd, and most of Filthy Mouth.
