Will this be the first "cover" of an album cover?

Van Halen, known for including cover songs on their albums, is obviously covering a cover with their cover picture of a locomotive in a round border that is almost identical to the Commodores' "Movin' On" record cover.

Is this the first "cover" of a cover? I think it's subtle and freaking genius.

Any article that mentions this does so with an almost sinister tone. Things like "did Van Halen BORROW the idea from the Commodores? Hmmm? Hmmm?"

Many people have a first reaction to this like it is something bad and unoriginal.

Bands can copy ACTUAL SONGS from other artists and put those on their records.

But "covering" the COVER is inherently bad?

Like I said, it's freaking genius.

Also, when you idiots with popular blogs and websites finally figure this out and write articles about VH "covering" a cover, make sure you tell 'em that someone from the ROTH ARMY figured it out first.

I know that people have posted about the similarity in covers. I havent seen anyone call it a "cover of a cover" in the context that I did in my first post. Now, maybe others have and those comments are buried in the MEGATHREADS here. I think this deserves it's own thread. Too much is being lost in the megathreads.

In answer to the thread title question, No. In fact, there is an entire web site devoted to this stuff: TotallyLooksLike

Cool. Just to be clear: I've been around the internet long enough to know that anything that I think of, someone else already thought of it and posted it somewhere. That's why before making this thread, I did a google search for "van halen cover of a cover" and nothing came back. I also checked the thread titles in Main and in Albums and saw no direct mention of the cover in the thread titles. Now we come to the MEGATHREADS here. Topics are going in way too many directions in the megathreads, so I allowed for the possibility that someone already mentioned it, by saying that someone in the Roth Army said it first (not necessarily me.) I wasn't going to go through every megathread here to see if someone already talked about it.

Sorry if this sounds like im irritated. I'm still too high on this new song to be upset. But I do hate the megathreads. Maybe this should be moved to Feedback now...

Wasn't 'OU8acancer-aidsinfectedcock2' a cover of "Meet The Beatles"... one that Van Halen had previously covered on the inner sleeve of the Fair Warning album?

Not at all, friend. You see, the "megathreads" occur when you have folks posting every singular thought that happens to pop into their heads continuously throughout the day. (I'm not saying that is the case here, as your thread is indeed a thoughtful one, which could provoke some particularly refreshing insight and discussion.) So rather than closing and dumping these things, they tend to be merged into already existing threads. This is done as an attempt to keep the Main section less cluttered and readily accessible for breaking news, which for a while there came raining down in buckets.

Craig, I understand this. I was a Main mod for, like, 6 years.

Believe me, I can completely sympathize and understand why you stopped being one.

That's a funny story, actually. After the 2007 tour there was just nothing new to talk about in the VH world. I had my second kid and "life" stuff was keeping me busy. I would check in here every 4-5 months and would be shocked to still see my name as a main mod. I didn't ask to be de-modded, but someone finally realized that I just wasn't ever here and took me down. I didn't mind or take it personally at all. Totally understood.

How do you know for sure someone in the Commodores doesn't have a time machine, saw the new VH cover, went back in time & re-created theirs to resemble it? Then we get that whole time-loop-continuum-if I kill my grandpa when he's a kid how could I be ever born to kill him therefore does he die-type problem.

For some reason I'm craving fried chicken & scrambled eggs now. But which will the waitress bring out first?

Simple. If the Commodores guy had a time machine, he would have gone back and moved Lionel Richie to the front of the band much earlier, so they could have actually made some money before 1977.
