    Hard rock vs heavy metal

Ok lets settle the debate once and for all

On one side we have van halen, zeppelin, gnr, aerosmith, acdc, pink floyd, hendrix, zz top, lynyrd skynyrd, and all of the "hair" bands.

And on the other side we hace metallica, sabbath, iron maiden, judas priest, megadeath, anthrax, motorhead, and all nu metal, and death metal bands.

Well I got SOMETHING from it, although nobody had a solid answer. I got that Blues has a lot to do with defining hard rock and that metal seeks a more male audience. Best was the names in the thread - Binnie with a very good post - Katie, Mr. Badguy, tustoffa, Vanhalener and ACE DIAMOND! Lots of fun, thanks.

I voted for Metal, because I have always preferred heavier music. That was a major reason that I decided Spambot ruined Van Halen....as Van Halen was so LOUD and so fucking INTENSE that it had that supreme atomic energy that I love. When Spam walked in.....christ.....

Suddenly it was "OOOOOOOoooooh baby gimme all yore luv tonight....."

    Fuck.

Though of course I love a lot of bands who would be classified as Hard Rock. Hair bands and Southern Rock are two classifications I hate.

You put a gun to my head and make me choose, I'd say metal (as it's defined here).

To be honest, however, every person's interpretations of those terms differs....

in 1982, iron maiden were considered a scary evil satanic metal band. standing in the front row in 2008, with a bunch of other 40 somethings (and a few younger hotties) it dawned on me... this is a classic hard rock band.

metal NOW, and i'm sure binnie will agree, is a very different thing to what it was then. i reckon cvh certainly had elements of their music that were 'metal' of that period definitely.
but the general genre categorization thing shits me. to paraphrase our mate dave; good music is good music, ya know? whatever turns your crank.

Heavy metal is a something for the right place at the right time

The best rock guitarist and vocals seem to be from hard rock, southern rock, california rock

with age and familiarity rock and metal have blended some metal bands into a classic rock - I may not agree but it is all semantic and what sells

Opeth is having a problem right now. Their newest album does not contain the usual SHOUTER METAL and their fans are upset.

Article in the current issue of Guitar World about it.

Seems that today's generation of Metal Fans think Metal "Vocalists" are supposed to be "Shouters" and "Screamers", NOT "singers".

I find that to be somewhat stupid. As your band ends up sounding like every other fucking shouter band on the planet.

Where is the talent in shouting, grunting or gargling?

Metal singing has degenerated into shouting and yelling.

Much like R & B degenerated into Rap music. Talking and hollering about "SAY BITCH! GIMME MAH MONEY!" does not require any fucking singing ability. In fact, it only requires you have the nerve to get up on a stage with a mic in your hand and make a fucking ass out of yourself.

Standing in front of a crowd of fucking Juggalos pouring 2-liters of fucking Pepsi all over one's self while yelling about some fucking shit is not "talent". It is just some fucking morons making a spectacle of themselves, and a crowd of hundreds or thousands of retards who are so fucking stupid that they are somehow entertained by it.

    But I digress.

Give me a fucking vocalist who can actually SING any day. It requires talent, and some decent genetics.

OR....in the case of our Uncle Dave, be the best fucking frontman on the planet, and you do not have to be Halford, Tate, Dio, etc.

Based on Mikeyj122 list i would go for metal. However,to me "nu metal" should not be in the same list as Megadeth,Metallica,Maiden and Anthrax as they are not comparable at all.Often the lines blur between what is hard rock and what is metal, for example you have posted Guns n Roses in the hard rock category but when they first emerged you could find the album's in the metal section.I think people confuse Heavy Metal with Thrash Metal alot.Another example is Youthanasia by Megadeth.A Metal band through and through but that album leaned more toward a hard rock sound.Hard Rock has more emphasis on grooves and melody,Metal more on fast technical playing.Whatever floats you boat.To me it is the attitude of metal that is the clincher
I really love you baby, I love what you've got

Shouting, grunting or gargling is an acquired taste yes,but there is technique and an element of skill contained within (being able to do it without destroying your voice)

There's so much variety in the modern metal scene.

Compare 'Alter Bridge' and 'The Dillinger Escape Plan' and you'd struggle to come up with a decent list of similarities after 'distorted guitars'.

It's certainly true that the centre-ground of metal in 2012 is what would have considered 'extreme' in 1987. Contrary to popular opinion, however, not all bands scream/shout. In fact, I would say that most of the bands of recent years who've become most popular use a surprising amount of clean vocals - Killswithch Engage are a case in point. Tool would be another.

It's all a case of perspective. Someone who likes pop, soul, r'n'b would probably think that Bruce Dickinson's voice was too much, but for you guys he's the archetypal metal singer.....

    Ok got it now.

Its like comparing your children ? Both, (or more) are awesome.
An open E chord blasted at 1000watts with a decent melody
versus an E getting shredded at same wattage ?
    Its all good.

Tough choice, I think as I mature I probably lean more towards
Hard Rock, but ultimately if I think of the songs that really get
my adrenaline flowing, its still the faster stuff.

    Yup.

'Blackwater Park', 'Damnation', 'Deliverence', 'Still Life', 'Ghost Reveries'......it's hard to imagine how anyone could not appreciate Opeth (if not necessarily loving them). To me, any fan of 70s prog should be able to dig 'em.

Metal is nice for when you want to kick someone's ass or just embrace the aggression, but sometimes it's nice to just chill out and listen to something fun.

Enter rock and roll. Good times, partying. That's rock and roll; and that's VAN HALEN!

I'm not voting because they're both equally important IMO.

And remember... VH were once considered HEAVY METAL! ... then AC/DC comes along and calls them POP! lol

Although I really like several hard rock acts, I'd easily vote for metal here (and even the peerless DLR-era VH was quite metal, in its own right, in my book).

I'm really passionate about death metal, grindcore, thrash, (also hardcore and its hybrids) etc...for the past nearly twenty years, so yea, Metal would get my vote, every time.

Its not a stupid discussion, and your comment about a burger has no bearing, commpletly irrelavant. Just because you dont like something doesnt mean you get to talk shit. If I would have started a jazz vs bues debate you wouldnt be pissing and moaning. And for the record dlr once said that van halen was not heavy metal, they were "big" rock.

I think the problem is that people would label it differently. I think VH is hard Rock , but some goofy publications called it heavy metal. Heavy Metal as a category can have Iron Maiden, or cookie monster death metal.
So it's not easily dealt with as a poll, due to subcategories and how it's all labeled.

I guess I dont think its so complicared, but maube it to others. When someone asks you whays your favorite kind of music what do you say? I say hard rock or classic rock. I know their are plenty out there that say metal, and thays fine. Its not a one is better or worse than, the other topoc, its what do you relate to more? I like some metal, I even watch that metal show. And if you asked the guys on that show they would tell you that their is a vig difference. Pretty much hard rock started with led zeppelin and metal pretty much started with sabbath. You can nickle and dime it all you want and say what avout this or what about about that, im trying to keep itbreal simple here.

Good grief, son! What are you using for a keyboard? A fucking telegraph?

Anyway, one of the reasons I became a Van Halen fan is because Van Halen defies labels and categories. They're one of the very few 'rock' bands that appeal to a wide demographic of people. All across the board, people from all different walks of life and musical preferences generally dig this band. The rich suburban white kids who listen to nothing but rock like this band, girls that love to dance like this band, even the guy who listens to 'Mean Street' to get his adrenaline up to knock over a liquor store likes this band.

The band (Roth in particular) know how sophisticated their audience is. Do you think Judas Priest would ever have Kool And The Gang open for them? Do you think Halford would ever let Nile Rodgers produce one of his albums? (BTW I'm not knocking Priest, I dig them too. I'm just trying to make a point).

I've always believed categories and labels were fucking stupid, and apparently Van Halen feels the same way, because they refuse to be thrown into one. It's the Roth element. Van Hagar is usually heard only in the suburbs, but you'll hear Classic Van Halen everywhere, especially in the parts of town Van Hagar fans are too terrified to go into.

Van Halen is good music, pure and simple. Van Halen is for EVERYBODY!....they all want some.

Give me a fucking vocalist who can actually SING any day. It requires talent, and some decent genetics.
I disagree with your take on Hip-Hop. You have a lot of shit artists out there at the moment, yes, that is very much a given. But it takes a lot of talent to A.)Make a good beat, B.) Spit good rhymes, and there is a talent to it. Bone Thugz, Beastie Boys, fuck, even Eminem pre-2004 all hold in my opinion a great amount of artistic talent in my book. You've got to be witty, quick on your feet and have a good flow going on.

Rapping about the "Bitches and Ho's", and shit, is indeed the easy way out, and pretty much is nothing new since "The Chronic" was made, but anybody who's a true fan of the genre can easily point out who's taking the easy, cheap way out to get a cellphone ringtone, or who's really fully vested in the genre, and music itself.

    ************************************************** ***********************

I very much agree with your take though, on the current state of metal. Hell, for a while, not only did we have these shouter bands which I cannot stand, but you also had guys like Disturbed, Slipknot, Three Days Grace, and System of a Down who were just flat out terrible, and all but destroyed Heavy Metal with their airplay and repititivness.

The bad political lyrics (bitching about the Iraq War all the fucking time), the bad lyrics in me (ooooh singing about "Waking up the Demons", how edgy!), the terrible vocalists (fuck you dave drainman, you hack), and just the complete lack of musicianship! for gods sake, I almost would say that having a guitar solo is all but mandatory for a hard rock/heavy metal group, that's a MAJOR reason why the genre is as popular as it is. Dudes like EVH, Hendrix, Page, Slash, etc, were GODS and made people want to pick up the instrument. You don't get that with these corporate toolbags.

No its actually a mobile device. These touch screen gadets make it hard to spell words correctly all the time. You either have to go really slow or correct nearlu every word you type. But I bet some of you guys wouldn't know about these kinds of devices.

You may think im a pain in the ass,but what I am trying to do is bring some life to this site. And for the record I dont care if nobody agrees with me around here, thats fine. But somebody must agree with me because im not just making rhis stuff up. And it seems to me that it is not me but ecerybody else that gets up set when I dont agree with them. I was just trying to have a open debate about hard rock vs heavy metal, but it was you and a couple of other people that said its dumb and pointless, blah blah blah. So essentially you attacked me first then you get all pissy when I defend myself. But im the one causing shit huh?

Btw I am gonna try to clean up my posts, its just hard wth a mobile device.

It is all subjective. I'd vote metal, but somebody would just tell me that some of my favorite bands aren't metal. They would be wrong, but that wouldn't stop them from saying so.

I'll put it into perspective. I would absolutely categorize CVH as metal. Some say I'm wrong, and that's totally okay. Some people even get pissed when others put them in that category (and can go fuck themselves-like I said earlier, it's subjective.) However, if bands like Dokken, Cinderella, or FFS Poison can be classified as ANY fucking kind of metal be it hair, glam, or (more appropriately) SHIT metal, then CVH should OWN the metal category.
