I hate Sammy Cagar for what he did to Van Halen and David. .... 28 years between 1984 and ADKOT, but look what I discovered in one of the main avenues of Buenos Aires:
Van Halen´s graffitis, even the people here knows that the True Van Halen is back.

Thank you SunisinuS, but it wasn´t me. I am a little old for graffitis.... I discovered the graffitis four days ago, I couldn´t believe it!!! They were on the wall of a private hospital !! But I hadn´t my camera, so I returned yesterday and took some photos, and looking for more graffitis I found a couple more on a wall of the National Academy of Medicine, that building is not for students, the guy who painted the graffitis has balls, maybe he is not a teenager, there are not Discos there, it´s a high class residencial area. Can a trade the next can of Red spray paint for a glass of vodka???

Styx was really a band that TRULY belonged to Dennis DeYoung and the Panozzo brothers, John and Chuck respectively. Oh sure, James Young came in on the gig fairly enough, and if you use a measuring stick of, say, Iron Maiden's pre-1980 lineup changes, I guess the argument could in theory be made that he's as close to an original member as anybody's bound to get. But really, there's just no disputing that the real AUTHORITY on all things Styx is, for all intensive purposes, Dennis DeYoung.

It's kinda hard to say what went wrong after Paradise Theater, although most people write it off as "Well, Dennis and the band had success with a semi-concept album, so the ego got inflated, and he said 'Why not do something futuristic?'; and thus was born Kilroy Was Here and the band remained virtually joke fodder from there on out".

Personally, I think that's too easy. While James and Tommy today wouldn't dare acknowledge it, Kilroy Was Here was actually a pretty solid album as Broadway rock, and nobody can deny the fact that both Mr. Roboto and Don't Let it End were big hits. Although it was a lot cheesier than what Styx had been before hand (and yes, there were plenty of cheese elements), Kilroy was also pretty well written for it's particular genre, and by all accounts is still a pretty fun listen and translates live well enough in Dennis' solo shows.

The sad thing about Styx was, unfortunately, the attempt to make a new album in 1999 when it was painfully evident that the band was horrifically fractured and not going in a good direction - at all. On Brave New World, you can plainly hear Dennis' material is a much different vein than what James and Tommy were in, and the album, while showing potentially, was so disjointed and awkward that it was fairly obvious that Styx was a lost cause.

Rather than facing the truth, what did James and Tommy do? They singlehandedly TOOK OVER the band, throwing Dennis out, replacing him with a nobody from Canada and touring casinos with lesser and lesser interest. Throwing the original founder out of the band was bad enough, but then pretending like he was never IN IT at all by removing any reference of him from their website? That was borderline criminal. I mean, it's bad enough that James sings half of Dennis' material live himself these days, rather than the nobody replacement from Canada, but they barely play ANY of his songs live at all these days.

Dennis, meanwhile, has proven all the critics wrong. His Hunchback of Notre Dame soundtrack was well orchestrated, although quietly received; after a successful tour with an orchestra performing both his hits and Styx's hits, he returned to the studio and recorded A Hundred Years from Now, deflating the ongoing rants from James Young that all Dennis wanted to do was sing sappy ballads. Dennis remains a fantastic performer and has not said a SINGLE negative word about James or Tommy since being unceremoniously dumped out of his band, while James and Tommy both use every single interview possible to bitch and moan about their dislike for Dennis.

You tell me - who's taken the higher road and who has the better footing?

What happened to Styx was uncalled for, ridiculous, and extremely absurd - but it's a FUCK of a lot better than talking about Sammy Hagar.
                              Twistin' by the pool.
