Steven Tyler’s Botched National Anthem Not Deemed Golden Ticket-Worthy

    http://music.yahoo.com/blogs/reality...222137636.html

Steven Tyler, the nicest and cuddliest judge on "American Idol," has a habit of telling almost everyone on "Idol" that they're "beautiful, just beautiful." But I have to wonder how he or his fellow judges, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson, would ever react if a prospective contestant walked into the "Idol" audition room and sang a song as pitchy as Steven's rendition of the national anthem at this Sunday's Baltimore Ravens vs. New England Patriots AFC Championship game
Look, I love me some S.Ty. He's one of rock 'n' roll's greatest legends and finest frontmen, a national treasure in fact--and really, who else could pull off a sequined Patriots scarf with such panache? And in his defense, Steven was singing live at the AFC game, while so many other "Star-Spangled Banner" performers have opted to lip-synch because acoustic conditions in such enormodomes are far from ideal. But that being said...this was not good, dawg. Maybe Steven should have lip-synched. I imagine the only reason he wasn't booed right off the field was the fact that he's a local Boston hero, and he was performing at Massachusetts' Gillette Stadium. Or that, you know, he's Steven Tyler, and people just love the guy no matter what he does.

However, outside Gillette Stadium, in the even vaster Twitterverse, there was a whole lot more jeering than cheering for Steven's um, interesting interpretation of the anthem.

"The Insider" host and former Fox Sports/ESPN anchorman Kevin Frazier tweeted: "Was [Ravens linebacker] Ray Lewis crying during the National Anthem or was Steven Tyler hurting his ears?" Fox Sports columnist Jason Whitlock posted: "Steven Tyler far more obscene than Janet Jackson's [bared Super Bowl breast]." Sports Business News writer Howard Bloom tweeted: "Is there any chance Ray Lewis can tackle Steven Tyler?" MMA Beatdown chimed in with: "BREAKING NEWS: New England authorities are seeking out Steven Tyler for questioning in relation to a homicide on the National Anthem today." Sports humorist Ashley Burns sardonically pointed out: "Please remember that Steven Tyler's job is criticizing people who sing." And even old-school rappers Naughty By Nature randomly tweeted: "I'm sorry Steven Tyler I can't give u a yellow ticket to move on to LA with that performance....what are ya votes Jennifer & Randy?"

Only former reality singer Aubrey O'Day, of "Making The Band"/Danity Kane infamy, seemed to be feeling the S.Ty love, tweeting: "Love Steven Tyler singing the nat anthem! Werk."

Honestly, I think Steven is a fantastic rock singer--his performance of Aerosmith's "Dream On" was THE highlight of the Season 10 "American Idol" finale last year--but this was absolutely not his best moment. It did not werk. Steven was not in it to win it in this particular AFC game.

    Nice scarf, though.

I didn't think it was horrible. You always see celebrities giving a piss poor rendition or worse....forgetting the words and here is Steven Tyler who has ingested quite a bit of chemicals in his day....at least he remembered the words.

She's no Christine Aquilera...that's for sure. Roseann Barr and Carl Lewis' renditions were trainwrecks too. Underpants can sing.

Everything about Underwood is better than Christina Skankuilera. From her ass to her voice.

American Idol is a bigger joke than Tyler's performance here imo.

Nobody judging his performance can sing it better.

what does pitchy mean? It's a nondescript adjective.

That is one hard song to sing but conversely it's pretty funny when someone bites it going for the high notes.

I think the main problem singers have is the misconception that it was written by Francis Scott Off-key.

    That's very accurate.

I was thinking yesterday about rock singers in general. I'm not a huge Stones fan by any means but Mick has to be one of the worst vocalist ever IMO. You don't hear anybody talking about it though. You know why? Because it doesn't matter.

This is a fucking stupid non-story. It's just something that's done before every game, and by kickoff everyone forgets about it.
The only National Anthem anyone really remembers is the one Whitney Houston did at the Super Bowl before she smoked her kneecaps off.

Why does everyfuckingthing have to be such a big deal? No one gives a shit!

Put two pieces of bread and some mustard on this fucking SPAM thread.

Agreed...it pretty much sounded exactly the way one would have envisioned Steven Tyler singing the national anthem...no egregious bum notes or anything...

For my money, the Star Spangled Banner sounds better when a woman sings it than a man anyway; something about the tune is more suited to a woman's voice.

I will say Tyler's rendition is a welcome break from the numerous versions offered by various female singers (white and black) of late that all sound like some ode to a southern gospel church soloist...with the elongated ebonic wailing omnipresent on every vowel...I mean, after the umpteenth different singer doing that biz, that shit needs to have a rest.

I hardly watch US sport and I'm bored of it, it must get very tiresome.

Over here you only get that nonsense a few times a year at international matches.

The only time it was good...

I don't either. It sounded like Steven Tyler singing the national anthem to me. Anyone that has ever listened to Aerosmith knows what Steven Tyler's singing voice and style is like, and he sang the anthem like he would an Aerosmith song. BFD, I thought he did a good job.

Well it sounded like shit on my clock radio when Bob Rivers played it at some ungodly hour of the morning.

Some rock singers can pull off acapella singing better than others. Steven probably shouldn't try it without Joe & the rest of the band. Even so, it's not as awful as any of the Desmond Childmolestor ballads that Aeroshit had on any of their albums since they quit drugs.

It's a bit harsh to call him a child molester.

Plus if you look at the songs he did with Aerosmith he can't be blamed for a lot of the shit, it's just

    "Heart's Done Time"
    "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)"
    "Angel"
    "What It Takes"
    "Flesh"
    "Crazy"
    "Hole in My Soul"
    "Ain't That a Bitch"

I think any Aerosmith fan that says they never at any point like 'Dude' would be fibbing.

On a related topic it's interesting to wonder how successful Bon Jovi would have been without Childs. Would they have been any more than moderately successful in Japan and splitting up by 1990 without

"You Give Love a Bad Name"
    "Livin' on a Prayer"
    "I'd Die For You"
    "Without Love"
    "Bad Medicine"
    "Born to Be My Baby"
    "Blood on Blood"
    "Wild is the Wind"
    "Keep the Faith"
    "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead"
    "Something for the Pain"
"This Ain't a Love Song" / "Como Yo Nadie Te Ha Amado" (Spanish version)
    "Hearts Breaking Even"
    "Diamond Ring"
    "One Wild Night"
    "The Distance"
    "Misunderstood"
    "All About Lovin' You"
    "Hook Me Up"
    "Bells of Freedom"
    "Dirty Little Secret"
"(You Want to) Make a Memory"
"Let's Make it Baby" (demo, special release)
    "Brokenpromiseland"
    "Fast Cars"
    "Happy Now"
    "Learn to Love"

Steven Tyler, you are not alone. "Fiendish" is how one expert describes the national anthem. "The Star-Spangled Banner," a song that American schoolchildren learn and sing with regularity, is notoriously difficult -- striking fear in the hearts of even the most-seasoned performers.

The song requires remarkable dramatic range of its performers -- a full octave and a half, explained Brian Zeger, artistic director for vocal arts at the famed Juilliard School in New York City. "Even most operatic arias don't encompass such a range," he said, adding that most popular songs require less than an octave's range.

"It's incredibly hard to sing. It has an incredibly wide range. You need an incredibly strong low voice and an incredibly strong high voice as well," he said.

It's something that Tyler, the Aerosmith frontman and "American Idol" judge, has learned the hard way, turning in what some said was a screechy, pitchy version of the song before Sunday's AFC Championship game.

It marks the second time that Tyler has been taken to task for his "Star-Spangled Banner" duties, and he joins an ever-growing list of celebrities who have found themselves taking heat for their performances.

Steven Tyler's national anthem: Worst ever? [Poll]

We asked Zeger to break this "fiendish" song down for us:

First off, "The Star-Spangled Banner" starts low and quiet ("Oh, say can you see...") and builds to full-volumed, full-lunged, skyscraper-high notes ("O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave / O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?"). That's challenging for anyone.

But most troubling, Zeger said, is that the high note in "free" requires the singer to ramp up on an "e" vowel. That's actually quite rare in music, he said.

And then there's the unfamiliar language that we've all memorized -- but that's incredibly easy to forget when, say, singing at the Super Bowl. Blame all those O'ers and thro's. And really, does anyone know what "ramparts" are? (They're protective walls surrounding a fort -- but we had to look it up.)

"The Star-Spangled Banner" has an unusual history, according to Scout Songs. It started out as a poem written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 titled "Defense of Fort McHenry." It was turned into a song by adding the somewhat modified tune of John Stafford Smith's "The Anacreontic Song." The song was retitled at that time as "The Star-Spangled Banner," and Congress proclaimed it the U.S. national anthem in 1931.

"It has bedeviled singers ever since," Zeger said.

The song's unusual history is partly to blame for the song's difficulty, said Zeger, who stressed that he means no disrespect to the artists involved. But usually, a song's words and music are written together from the start. In this case, the song and the music were forced to become one, creating some vocal challenges where "music and words don't fit very well together," he said.

If there's anything to be thankful for, it's that we all sing only an abbreviated version of the song. It actually goes on for four stanzas.

    Meh....who really cares?

You asked for Steven Tyler to sing the anthem, and you got Tyler-style vocals. Did people expect him to sound like Michael fucking Buble?

The guy has been screaming rock lyrics for the last 40 years....his voice is going to be gritty and raw. It's part of the charm of rock and roll. At least he was on key.

hambon has it right....this kind of shit is a non-story and is only fodder for the day after 'water cooler' conversations for the office cubiclce crowd. Critiquing celebrity performances of the national anthem has been a habit in this country since that load Roseanne Barr fucked it all to hell many years ago...complete with her "jock scratching" finale. It's time to focus on more important things....
