Yup....it's been asked a lot.
It's been debated a lot.
It's been rehashed a lot.
It's basically been beaten to death, and people are probably just too tired of talking about it to reply.
Suggested reading: "Crazy From The Heat" by David Lee Roth.
Or, just Google "Van Halen breakup" or something similar and you'll probably find scads of articles about it.

K, I have to say in this new guy's defense, the Army is supposed to be an internet source of info for Daveheads or new Dave fans. So, we shouldn't attack him just because he has a question. And Dave's book isn't as easy to find as it used to be.
That said, I don't feel like typing it either.

Dave quit and pursued a solo career...
Ah fuck it...
Basically, Dave wasn't happy because the band was working so slowly and having such a hard time coming up with a follow-up to 1984. He felt the band was on top of the world, the momentum was there, and sitting on their asses rehearsing half-assed riffs like the riff on GOOD ENOUGH wasn't the way to make the most of their various career opportunities. Meanwhile, Eddie and Alex were always drunk, and Michael Anthony hated his guts. It was getting unproductive and ugly. He made CRAZY FROM THE HEAT, things were just as bad after he was done with that...and eventually he walked out, made the deal for a never-made movie called CRAZY FROM THE HEAT, and quit. Eddie was in deep depression for weeks until he called Sammy Hagar, ruining Van Halen's future reputation with one fucking phone call and a bunch of Journey fans' happy consent.
April 1, 1985. A sad, sad day in rock history. I still maintain that Dave was pushed into a corner. But he shouldn't have made it so final. VAN HALEN will not be remembered in as invincible a manner, and leaving is a mistake Dave probably regrets to this day.
This is what I've managed to whittle out of the split from all ends of the fence over the years:
1. Dave wanted to work on a new Van Halen album; Ed and Al didn't.
2. Dave had some interest in doing solo work; Ed and Al didn't take kindly to it.
3. Ed had serious drug problems;
4. Dave wanted to turn the whole "Crazy from the Heat" idea into a movie and there was a lot of expressed interest in the idea. When he went to Ed and Al with it, Ed was OK with the idea but Al nixed it right from jump street and suddenly Ed didn't like the idea either;
5. All that added up this: it was made very clear that Al (and by default Ed) didn't want David around at all - nobody ever fired Dave per se but it was made EXTREMELY clear that he was no longer wanted.
6. I don't think there was ever an official split up, I think David more or less said "We'll work our shit out when you guys get your shit together, until then I'm going solo" over the phone to Ed - Ed went and cried to Al (literally) about it, and Ed and Al decided right then and there to replace him.
7. Ed's car mechanic was the same mechanic for Sammy Hagar's rigs, and the mechanic put them in touch with each other.
8. Sammy was a complete "Yes" man and didn't want to work very hard either. Where as Dave would work for 3 months on an album and tour it for 10, Van Hagar liked to work for 10 months on an album and tour it for 3. Which provided Al exactly the sort of control he wanetd in the band, and Sam's work ethic matched Ed's to a T.
In a nutshell, that's it.
Twistin' by the pool.
Mix mine together with Rikk's and you've basically got what happened, I believe.
Yup. And I s'pose some of the particular details are going to die with Ed, Al and Dave. And some of the details have probably been long forgotten by those involved. All I know is that I've only heard two perfect VAN HALEN songs since 1984 came out.

3. Ed had serious drug problems;
Look at Ed and Dave now. It's pretty clear which guy has had his life destroyed by alcohol and drug problems. Both physically and mentally, Ed is a drugged-out, alcoholic mess.
It never kept Dave from touring or making an album.Originally posted by Fabulous Shadow

Did it?
True, but at least it wasn't interrupting with the work schedule. Dave indulged, sure, but he kept it to a point to where he could function normally - Ed was getting way past the safe cut-off line. Dave has always stated that he knows to party, but he also knows where to draw the line before it gets to be too much to function within his limits.Originally posted by Fabulous Shadow

It's the alcohol that has been an issue for Ed, not the drugs.
How do you know?
Dave has said Ed was coked out of his mind during the post-1984 sessions.
Yes, it's called self control.Originally posted by bueno bob

Ed has none.

Indeed. One of the stupidest things I've ever heard of. It's like having skin cancer and exposing yourself to constant radiation.Originally posted by DLR7884

My point is that I don't think Ed's drug use was any more intense than Daves... Ed just had the alcohol problem and imo THAT is where his issue lyes.

Did booze make him choose Sammy Hagar as his lead singer?
No, it was the drugs.

But Dave didn't want to work with them... ???
Nah...I think if they would have called him at any time and apologized, Dave would have seen his way back. These guys were brothers, they built the name Van Halen from the ground up. Even when you're at your absolute maddest at somebody who's been a good friend to you in the past, you can make amends.Originally posted by Fabulous Shadow

They did it in '96 and 2000...Dave was saying he'd be happy to return to Van Halen as early as 1989 from my memory.
Moreover, didn't Dave's dad call up Ed and try to hash all the business out back in '87 or '88 so that they could do it again? I'm sure Dave wasn't happy watching Sammy Hagar wreck his old band with a bunch of tired-ass ballads and pop rock fare...
Van Halen, the REAL Van Halen, is, was and always will be David Lee Roth, Edward Van Halen, Michael Anthony and Alex Van Halen. Anything else is second-rate and watered down to make it safe for the mass public.
That said, Dave left... Was doing his own thing and made plans that did not include the Bros. They were within their rights to find a new singer and continue making a living.
We here at the Rotharmy support VAN HALEN with David Lee Roth. Free speech and opinions are encouraged. But at this site, VAN HALEN is David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony (although some of us feel the first two ingredients are the most essential).
Well, I don't GROUP myself with anyone and I support my own opinions and beliefs. While I do believe that CVH is the best Van Halen there is, I do not support the idea that the VH bros are assholes because they went forward in their careers after Dave left.Originally posted by Rikk

I agree, but I think the VH brothers could have at least tried a little harder to keep Dave in the band.Originally posted by Fabulous Shadow

Well, by the time Sammy joined VH, Dave had pretty much moved on. We can't blame the demise of VH solely on the bros. It takes two to make a thing go right... or WRONG...
"It takes two to make a thing go right... It takes two to make it out of sight.." isn't this a rap song from the 80's? Fak where's Bill when you need him.
It is... LMAO!

I like the Whopper...Fuck the Big Mac... Is that it? Maybe we dont need Bill afterall. Oh well. He's more into LoverBoy anyways.
