Does the tortoise ever go in the pool with you? I know they are built to withstand the heat, but still. The only way I loved 109 degrees was drunk with an ice chest of freezing beer and wearing nothing but a wet bathing suit while on my old ski boat at the river. When you are waterskiing and it's that hot out it feels so good. Warm air breezing by as all the cool water splashes you just right.

a human swamp cooler! we don't bring the torts in the pool, or encourage it. they do float however, it's just that during weed season and such, we let them outta their pens and run amok. most walk to the edge, check it out, and move on. to drop in from 6-8 inches above isn't conducive to a manageable entry. we had one however, who would walk right up to the pool and flop right in and drop to the bottom. after 2 or 3 times fishin' him out (right away, always supervised) we didn't let him out as much.

I run the sprinklers for an hour or so every summer day after work and weekends, to give them a nice cool down.

so, our dog had a bad disc in his spine, but after a week or so of meds, he seems to be much better. he brought in a pigeon this morning (after I went to work ) and ate it in the living room. feathers and pieces everywhere.

Our dog had 20 epileptic seizures in a row. It was just thrashing around like a fish out of water and foaming at the mouth. luckily we got ahold of the vet in the middle of the night and we got her on some phenol barbital. That ended the seizures but the dog was hammered and barely could walk. We've taken her medication level down because it's hard on the liver. The vet suggested we give her fish oil. A few days on the fish oil and the dog has really come back. She's back to chasing squirrels and stuff. The vet said in some cases the fish oil works so well the dog can be off the medication completely.

We got this dog because the previous one had to be put down because of a brain tumor. This one was doing fine and then I noticed she had no energy and started to sleep a lot. Then she all a sudden had a fit of seizures. Strange stuff. A year ago that dog was fine.

Speaking of pets...how come when I actually get the chance for a snooze on the couch before work, my cat is always hogging it and I get stuck with the love seat?

I'm sad to announce the death of my family's pet cockatiel, Fortune

This morning, my mom finally took Fortune to the vet to check out what's been going on with his breathing (he was breathing through his beak on occasion, and birds aren't supposed to do that unless they're sick.) . My first suspicion was a respiratory infection or aspergillosis spores in his throat so that's why I wanted to take Fortune to the vet anyway. It turns out the poor birdy had a very agressive form of cancer and his entire abdomen was covered in cancerous tumors and the reason why he was open-mouth breathing was because it had metastasized to his lungs. We only had two options, put him down, or have him die at home. The vet only gave him a few months to live had we chose the latter.

Fortune passed away at approximatley 9:45AM peacefully in his sleep at the vet's office I'm not sad because the poor birdie has been suffering so much for the past few months and it's such a relief to see him go. Every time this bird would wheeze and breathe with his mouth open it would literally feel like my heart was breaking in two, and the fact that me and my mom went on vacation and had a good time while he was slowly dying of cancer dosen't help at all. I've been such a nervous wreck for the two weeks that he's been like this and it's such a relief to know he's not suffering anymore and that he's in a better place. It's weird, I feel like now that Fortune is dead, he's always with me now....

Exactly. Dog, cat, fish, bird, reptile, tarantula (I had one as a kid that I loved). Our personal relationship to an animal is special. And it fucking hurts when bad things happen. Especially since pets are so innocent and just want our love and only return unconditional love...that when a terrible thing happens it kills us a little inside.

It's been an interesting mishmash of emotions I've been having all day. In one respect, I'm sad Fortune is gone but in another respect I'm glad he's not suffering anymore.

But honestly, I don't want another pet, at least not right now. I've been thinking of getting a pet snake. but like all pets, snakes eventually get old and die And I've been thinking about a German Shepherd. Again the same thing, dogs get old and eventually die.

I'll probably have a change in heart at some point, but for the time being. I don't want another pet....

BTW, we found Fortune in May 2003 on our front porch, so we don't know his exact age. We've had him for a decade, but he could have been older than that.
Hell, he wasn't even supposed to live a week when we found him, let alone ten years.

i found one in our backyard years ago by the pool. kept "elwood" for a few years and then gave him to a co-worker that had kids and liked the bird more than me. never really a fan of pet birds...

Exactly. Funny how they do that. And WTF we gotta do to get this thread stickied? It has become quite the wonderful place.

    Stickied?

Fuck that. We should unstick all the stupid stickied threads. If they were so great, they'd find their way back on page 1 regularly anyway.

I feel so bad for my cousin. Her town is still under feet of water. They were evacuated during the floods last week. She was at work, and could not make it to her home to get anything, including her dogs. The police are now working with humane societies to rescue abondoned pets...no word on her puppies yet. I feel so bad for her. Still can't get into High River. The city is still under water. All those poor animals!!! Breaks my heart!

I really think it's bullshit when the "authorities" prevent people from going to their own homes after some disaster, fire, flood, threat, anything really. They pull that shit all the time. Gotta be a terrible feeling knowing your pets need you & some douchebag not letting you through to get them.

It does suck, but I can understand where they're coming from. Water levels are still extremely high, and there has been sewage backup. What pisses me off is they did a door to door search for people that didn't follow the evacuation orders. They could have been rescuing pets at the same time.

My cousin tried to get home when the evac was ordered, but her street was already toast, it was no longer a street, but a fast moving river. This is our Katrina, so to speak...

Yay!!! My cousin's fur babies have been rescued from that horrid mess. Sewage, rotting garbage, etc...yet some idiots still refuse to leave and have their children with them. Shake my fucking head...yup, this is our "Katrina".

With my impending retirement looming we decided to get a new pup. We couldn't really have a dog in the past since we were always working.

His name is chopper he's a mix . His mom is half Great Dane and half English mastiff, his pop is a full blooded bull mastiff.

    Ummm...dude.

You do realize that cute puppy is gonna end up like 240 pounds right? You are gonna think you are feeding the Patriots offensive line. Be ready to be knocked down cause when Chopper wants kisses - Chopper GETS kisses!!!!!
