Ed's voice: Have you ever heard him alone?

This one's been bugging me - I can't recall ever hearing Ed's voice without Mike (or Wolf) and/or Dave in 2 or 3 part harmony. Has anybody ever heard him sing without the other two? Very curious as to what he really sounds like.

    Oh dear.

well this is going to be a really short thread. Sorry, I never listened to Van Hagar. And BTW it sucks. Shit I just had to turn it off it just REEKS.

So it's no wonder classic Van Halen has him singing only harmonies. God I'm sorry I asked.

Yeah really. Dude is NOT Andrea Bocelli. Shoes, you can really hear him in current form on the dvd that came with the new album. ..and he sounds great!

Not really, but any time EVH is singing backup to DLR it's just gotta sound great right?

No, you gotta call it for what it is. Whether Dave is screwing it up, or Ed's backup is shitty, gotta call it like it is.

Now Elvis wants to say Dave has sounded like crap for the whole tour, but out of 3 concerts I only heard him blow it a handful of times. I could just never tell what part Ed was singing.

Now I'm wondering if Alex sang on any more than "Happy Trails".

But the inside jacket on For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge shows all 4 band members at a studio microphone singing something. Not sure if real or just for pose. But in my mind when I hear background to a chorus, I like to imagine the entire band in the vocal room doing it together. Band of brothers style.

I remember when this came out, the kindest review came in the form of "A Tom Wait'esque Treatment". I am sure Tom Waits would have committed suicide after writing these lyrics though. Sorry Ed. Maybe the dog likes the tune.

I won't give you shit for that if you won't give me shit for this... I've seen Ed take on a full verse by himself during Why Can't This Be Love in You-tube clips from both the Balance and the at deaths door '04 tour and I gotta tell ya, I'd take an album of his singing over Sam's any day.

That you mistook this for Van Haggar instead of Van Cherone demonstrates your honesty. No worries, Shoes - you didn't miss much in the past 28 years.

P.S. If it's any consolation, 'How Many Say I' had the best vocals on the 'III' album. You should have heard the songs Cherone sang...

How long you been calling it that? So perfectly sums it up too. Sad. I must have watched that guitar smash in Tuscon clip 100 times before 2007 and was just sad it was over forever.

I actually just came up with it. Sadly fitting for that time indeed. I still sometimes fish through a handful of clips of that tour simply because I still can't believe my eyes. There was one clip, I think it may have been Dreams, where Ed played with one foot on the drum riser, facing his bro but head down, the whole song. Back to the crowd. I mean, that had to be creepy to be just sitting there almost thinking, "is he gonna drop...right here?"

...Have to put in my 2 cents: ...Didn't see the '04 tour and have just recently seen clips. Also, just recently watched Catherine and Rise again.
Speechless and depressing are the only 2 words that come to my mind. It's like you literally want to grab Eddie by the throat and beg him to JUST FUCKING STOP. It's crushing and heart breaking.

A legitimate and heartfelt thanks to all those who helped him survive and come back from a place no one should ever go.

Welcome back, Eddie. We missed you, bro.

That's where he kept his beer cup. He didn't stray too far from it on that tour.

VH III was a mess except for a few spots.

If memory serves it was nearing the end of Ed and Val's marriage and he was wallowing in depression and "deep meaningful songs" about relationships and politics.

I own it, but never listen to it.

There's a You-tube clip for an acoustic version of Josephina from VHIII, just Gary and Ed, for a TV show in Japan. Ed holds his own, but with a bit of a smokers growl, ofcourse. There's actually some interesting guitar going on in that tune. I think he's doing almost all of the backing vocals on that CD.

I bought it when it came out, really hoping for the best, and gave it away a few days later.

I really can't remember much about it except thinking that it sucked, and being amazed that my friend actually wanted it.

Actually Ed sounds more like Tom Waits... one of my favorite quotes to describe Waits' singing style is "his voice sounds like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car."

Perhaps, but with Waits, you more often than not find interest and pleasure in what comes out of his mouth, rather than considering sticking your head into a Fry-Daddy in order to relieve your agony.

Stern played this for Dave on the show when this came out and Dave took off his headphones and said he couldn't listen anymore. And that was only after about a minute or so.
