    The Scorpions To Retire

German rock band Scorpions to end career - Yahoo! News

Sun Jan 24, 7:22 am ET

BERLIN – The German rock band Scorpions is bringing down the curtain on a career spanning more than four decades.

The band, known for its early 1990s hit "Wind of Change" among others, said on its Web site Sunday that "we agree we have reached the end of the road."

It said it would end its career with a final album — "Sting In The Tail," to be released in March — and a tour that will start in Germany in May and take it across the world "over the next few years."

Guitarist Rudolf Schenker founded the band in Hannover in 1965. Singer Klaus Meine joined a few years later. Both men are 61.

40 year... no shit. They've had a good run, but no doubt could keep going a few more years.

To me their 70's stuff is their best...

"Sting in the Tail"? Nice to see that they are leaving with the same dumbass album titles.

They had a good run, but based on what I've heard recently, it was a good decision.

I have to agree that their 70's stuff was the best.

They lost me with some of the stranger stuff they did in the late 90's.

Saw them in 2005 supporting Priest and they were awesome.

At least they know when to stop, if they do actually retire that is.

I still can't believe that when this came out on CD they cut "Polar nights".

    WTF?

You know, I was about to post the exact same shit.

Well, not quite the exact same shit.

I didn't see them open for Priest in 2005.

But your last sentence is what was really on my mind when I clicked this thread.

I wouldn't like to see them retire... but now that they announced they will, I sure hope they'll actually be true to their word and won't pull a ______________* on us.

    Cheers! :bottle:

What i never understood is why the Scorpions hit such a brick wall after Love At First Sting. It seems like they just ran out of good ideas after that. Savage Amusement had maybe 2 good songs and after that it just got downright bad. Even the great cover art they were known for went lame. They are calling this last effort one of their greatest, thus in their minds they will go out on top. Most bands say this time and again only to meet failure. I hope for their sake it will be a decent effort.

They've always been good to their fans, and they're still a spectacular live band.

Nice to see that some older bands know how to retire with dignity....

They should have retired after "Blackout". That was probably their last truly great album.

That's true, yet Love At First Sting really took off for them. Next thing you know, that so-so live record followed it and they had Penthouse models starring in their videos, as well as dating members of the band. Sorta hard to throw that all away, ya know?

Yeah, being a short bald ugly German guy, Klaus Meine probably wouldn't be getting a lot of pussy if he wasn't a rock star.

Unless he would've taken up a career in German porn... not likely.

Yeah, I kind of stopped listening to them after Love At First Sting.
But I did like the song AlienNation.

I've only seen the Scorps twice in concert.
#1)My first "Heavy Metal" rock concert was The Scorpions/Iron Maiden(Black Out/ Number Of The Beast Tour) back in 1983.

#2)Texas Jam Dallas 1985 co-headlining with Deep Purple.
and some drunk S.O.B. next to me keep singing "Big Titty, Big Titty Nights!"

Good for them. Band's stick around to long. Dokken, ZZ Top, Skynyrd, Great White, and How about the once mighty Van Halen !! I think Dave should get away from the sisters so he can be Dave again before they put out so half ass disc.

Shame to see them go...still a stellar live band...saw them once supporting Priest (when they went down like headliners) and once with MSG (where MS was so drunk that he couldn't stand up without leaning on his amps and eventually got booed off stage) and were joined by Uli Jon Roth mid-set. Always deliver.

But at the same time, nice to see a rock n roll band give it up when they think the time is right rather than keep at it for the money and egotistical adulation (not that there's anything wrong with that either).

And, actually, their last few albums ("Unbreakable" and "Humanity-Hour 1") have been pretty fucking good...definitely the better than anything they did post-Love At First Sting.

Hope they go out with a bang.

I've only seen the Scorps twice in concert.

Last time I saw them was in 2001 touring as the middle act with Deep Purple and Dio.

They had not lost ANY of their energy. They still kicked ass.

Kudos to them for a 40-year run without anyone dying.

    THAT WAS 2003.
i went to the show in devore.
i do agree with your post.
and kudos to them for hanging it up with dignity when they realized that they are too old to keep going without ruining their band and it's legacy.
time will tell if this is another cash grab or the real thing.

Ok so give or take a couple of years.

SCORPIONS: 'Sting In The Tail' U.S. Release Date Confirmed - Jan. 25, 2010
Veteran German hard rockers SCORPIONS will release their final studio album, "Sting In The Tail", in North America on March 23 via Universal Music Enterprises. The CD was recorded at a studio in Hannover, Germany with Swedish producers Mikael "Nord" Andersson and Martin Hansen (the team behind THE RASMUS' "Dead Letters" CD).

Check out the cover artwork below.

After the release of the album and a three-year mammoth tour, which will take the SCORPIONS across five continents, the band will end its career. The group broke the news on its web site on Sunday.

"It was always our pleasure, our purpose in life, our passion and we were fortunate enough to make music for you — whether it was live on stage or in the studio, creating new songs," the band wrote.

"While we were working on our album these past few months, we could literally feel how powerful and creative our work was — and how much fun we were still having in the process. But there was also something else: we want to end the SCORPIONS' extraordinary career on a high note.

"We are extremely grateful for the fact that we still have the same passion for music we've always had since the beginning. This is why, especially now, we agree we have reached the end of the road. We finish our career with an album we consider to be one of the best we have ever recorded and with a tour that will start in our home country Germany and take us to five different continents over the next few years.

"We want you, our fans, to be the first to know about this.

"Thank you for your never-ending support throughout the years!

"We uploaded the very first snippets from our new album for you here. And now… let's get the party started and get ready for a 'Sting in the Tail'!"

In a December 2009 interview with the Polish web site Plejada, SCORPIONS guitarist Rudolf Schenker stated about the band's forthcoming CD, "After 'Humanity - Hour 1', which was more in the concept-album [vein], talking about the problems in the world, we said, 'OK, we talked about all these things which [were] happening and now we don't wanna talk again about problems, now we wanna party. We're going back to the roots of the band.

"We have great rock songs — fantastic rock songs — we have great ballads... The mixture if 10 percent ballads and the rest is up-tempo and mid-tempo [material]. And I think we have a great team of people working for us, producer team from Sweden — they're great people — and we're doing this recording in Stockholm and in Hannover, where my studio is.

"It looks great. We have a fantastic sound, because my studio is very good for guitars, and this time we're looking very much also to bring the guitars up, and, of course, with the great voice of Klaus, with the right melodies, giving the right vibe — the typical SCORPIONS sound."

Added singer Klaus Meine: "We recorded the last album in the U.S. This has a more European kind of feel, I think, working in Germany and in Sweden. And we're looking very much forward to releasing this in the spring and we can't wait to play the songs live on stage.

"We tried to find this spontaneous moment — not to overproduce things and to keep things really fresh.

"There are a lot of great songs on this record. And we always had our fans in mind [when putting the material together], especially the tour next year, because we hope many [of the new] songs we can [perform live] on the road."

2009 was the year of the SCORPIONS: they received the German lifetime achievement ECHO, collected many other awards, and undertook a grand tour through Russia, the U.S. and Europe. However, it is 2010 that will set a milestone for the career of the most successful international rock band from Germany. The SCORPIONS will be touring the world for the next two years and performing in the largest venues and stadiums that cross their path. The mammoth tour will be launched for the first time in many years in Germany. "It was important for us to give our fans a chance to celebrate a never-to-forget party with us," said Schenker. Meine added, "2010 is going to be a very special year for the SCORPIONS, so it is an especially good feeling to be able to start this tour at home."

The performances in Germany will be followed by concerts in the U.S., South America, Asia, Russia and various countries in Europe.

SCORPIONS' brand new DVD, "Amazonia - Live In The Jungle" — a live recording of the SCORPIONS concerts in Manaus and Recife, Brazil — is in stores now.

The band's last CD, "Humanity - Hour 1", was produced by James Michael and co-produced by songwriter/producer Desmond Child, who has worked with such high-profile pop/rock artists as AEROSMITH, BON JOVI, ALICE COOPER, KISS, RICKY MARTIN, CHER, MICHAEL BOLTON and BONNIE TYLER.

I still have most of their latter stuff in my collection so i'll have to go back and revisit some of their work. I know i still have Savage Amusement, Crazy World, and Face The Heat. I went out and bought their last album, i guess it was Humanity Hour 1, after hearing them on the Boneyard Eddie Trunk show. I listened to it a couple of times but i just couldn't get into it. I did end up getting rid of that one. I'll probably go out and buy the new one when it comes out and give it a chance. I seem to do this with all of the bands that i grew up with - give me one great album and i'll buy 10 bad ones after that hoping to rekindle the magic of the first one.

    Thumbs up

I've always been a big fan. Humanity and Unbreakable got me listening a lot again. They did great over the years and always did their own thing. They treated the whole career as a business. They were the onlt band at the US Festival not stoned or drunk while on stage.
    Very Professional attitude.

They probably tried to get drunk at the US Festival, but being Germans, the American beer had no effect on them.

Or the fact that Dave seemed to have consumed the majority of it all and none was left for them. Dave was just a little bit beyond tipsy that evening.

Reading the press release induced me to say, "they're still together?"

I'd be willing to bet they still DO put on a great show. The Love At First Sting one I saw was memorable even all these years later because it was just one slamming song after another after another. Like clockwork. No fucking around between songs. No sloppy jams...not even a bum note far as I can remember.

Yeah, well, good for them they were able to keep going as long as they wanted to and are going out the way they wanted to.

After World Wide Live (and I liked the film a bit better than the album...as a live album, a bit boring), kind of lost interest...Savage Amusement and the like didn't really do much for me...Winds Of Change irked the FUCK out of me when it was first released because it was relentlessly overplayed...didn't Herman Rarebell release a solo album in the mid-1980's called Herman Ze German? For some reason, I have a recollection of watching a video in the summer of 1985 or 1986 of Herman Ze German playing a Scorpi-fied version of the old surf rock song Wipeout inbetween water bong hits...and there were, like, TONS of bikini-clad babes in the video...

I heard a couple of samples of their new album....and I think they need to retire now...this new disc smells like shit, just like Humanity Hour 1..

After Crazy World, the Scorps released only ONE good disc....it was Unbreakable, a great album BTW....but they've also released a ton of crap like Unplugged shit, Moment of Glory, lame pop songs, etc, etc

Alien Nation is a cool song, but the whole album, Face The Heat, sucks too!!

To quote the lyric from 'Dynamite': "I'm gonna break my neck tonight, to get you off the ground!", sums these guys up the best...they really did break their asses and give 101% every night. They just seemed to have a great time and love what they do.
Echoing most statements here, I lean towards everything prior to and including 'First Sting'...the rest of their eighties uotput seemed much too cliche and dumbed-down, and this band was better than that.
The cover of 'Tokyo Tapes' never fails to make me cringe, taking Rudolph's ankles into consideration! Ouch!
