I believe Marshall amplification is a family owned company. I know Jim's son and daughter run it. As long as the company remains in the family and the kids care about it, we still should see some great stuff come out of Marshall. Heaven forbid the company ever goes public.

A full Marshall stack. Every garage guitarists dream. I remember in the 80's in high school ....man, if you had one of those you were instantly respected & envied by all the other hacks. And everyone wanted to come over to jam.

Never had the pleasure of owning one, but did plug in a few times. Oddly it made me sound leaps & bounds better than I really was.

    Rest in peace.

I heard if you took a tour of the Marshall factory as you walked by Mr. Marshall's office you could smell his cigar smoke.

The feeling of buying your first Marshall was almost as good as getting laid for the first time. People didn't want a Marshall amp. They lusted for one.

Yep, I sold every piece of gear I had except for my Stratocaster to buy my '73 Superlead half stack when I was 18...

And I still have it, among others...

    I just thought about it...

One of the amps I sold to get it was a JCM800 50 watt 112 combo...

I'd have missed it if the Superlead wasn't so cool with my Rat pedal...

Even though I did not own a full stack until this past August, and got my first Marshall in 1981, when I did finally get a full stack I was thrilled to pieces!

It is the aspiration of every rock guitarist to have at least one......

Heck, there was a guy in Nashville recently selling 4 JCM 900 stacks right now for the total price of $6500 on craigslist......a bit too much, in my opinion, as you are talking $541 for each cab or head.

    But still......

Rest In Peace Mr. Marshall.....you gave my life meaning with your amps....

Thanks Mr Marshall for every amp I've owned with your name on it.
To this day the best tone Eddie ever got was via his Marshalls.
    (Granted, heavily modded)

To me, the Marshall Amp is level pegging with a fender Strat and Les Paul
in creating the sound we love to this day.

My JCM800 just became that little bit more precious. RIP JIM !

One thing with getting older, everyone seems to freakin die.
I remember Randy Rhoads and Cliff Burton's deaths
and thinking "those" were the real day the music died.
Now Im in the 40's, someone that had at least some form of
musical impact on me in some way or another (or an actor)
    seems to pass away.

Marshall is still today the sound of metal (to this old bastard anyway)
and Jim will live forever every time one of those old tubes glow or the celestions
punch you in the guts, for years to come.

Hopefully Les paul held the gate open for him on arrival.
    A legend ! RIP

Hartley Peavey said the only other person besides him in the business who still owned his own company was Jim Marshall. Mr. Peavey said he got some good advice from Leo Fender and that was to never sell your company because you will just have to watch someone else ruin it. Jim Marshall may have passed on but he left the company in good hands. His son and daughter have ran the company for several years now and the company is still family owned. Owned by people who's last name is Marshall.

I have a couple books on amps and Marshall even made a mixing console. There's a picture of it in the book and it's got the same knobs that are on the amps.

Sounds like Jim kept smoking his cigars until the end. I remember a 87 year old telling me he could do everything he was doing because he gave up smoking at age 82. I've seen heavy drinkers and smokers live a long time and then I've seen exercise and health food fanatics die young of cancer and heart attacks. Go figure.

Would a moment of silence be construed as an insult?

In Southern CA I listen to 640 am talk radio. But every 1/2 & top of the hour they have a news break. The day they reported this the whole day and during the report each time the background music was Eruption. Thought that was pretty cool.

I love KFI 640, they use guitar intro from Ratt "Round and Round" for each news update.

YES! Listening to that RIGHT NOW as I read you post. 11:30. Weird. They have been using that for years. Hope they never change it.

Marshall made some great amps and some not so good ones. The only amp I ever had fail on me during a gig was a Marshall valvestate amp. It just died. I always liked their speaker cabinets. Marshall always built a nice box to put their stuff in.

EVH changed guitar music a second time after Hendrix.

Special thanks to Jim Marshall for this sound tool and cabinet he provided to EVH.
