1 - As Is / Stay Frosty (TIE)
    2 - Big River / She's The Woman (TIE)
    3 - Honeybaby
    4 - You & Your Blues
5 - all the rest (TIE)

Hard to have a last place song because everything keeps changing. Was Tattoo & Trouble With Never but I find myself enjoying those more now.

Maybe I should give the album another listen. Yup, I better.......

Even Tattoo that I used to skip when the cd came out has struck new interest for me. The guitar parts in the verse as subtle as they are sound fucking beefy. I like it!

    1. As Is (Best Song- great riff, Dave-ism, two Dave-squeals, appropriate solo, AVH beat -- This is Van Halen. )
    2. Stay Frosty (DLR's song, only not number one because it goes into novelty song territory. Two solos, great lyrics, Dave on guitar, fun)
    3. You And Your Blues (Catchy - old school harmonies, Dave even makes his out-of-range voice work here)
    4. Big River (Organic. Truly sounds natural. I can picture the whole band recording this live...like that would ever happen)
    5. Blood And Fire (Shoulda been the title of the album...story of the comeback...Told ya!)
    6. The Trouble With Never (Best breakdown...Selective amnesia is only a heartbeat away...)
    7. Beats Workin' (Best riff...good song...but inferior to the demo from which it was derived...makes up for it with the Wolf/Ed jam mid-song)
    8. China Town (All out assault)
    9. Outta Space (Rocks, but I don't like Dave's voice during verses)
    10. Tattoo (Clever lyrics, decent execution, but not standout)
    11. She's The Woman (Not bad, not great)
    12. Honeybabysweetiedoll (Too heavy, too busy...ymmv)
    13. Bullethead (Not pleasing to my ears - weakest track)

Nice Sniper...that riff on Space kicks my ass everytime. I automatically turn it up, grab a beer, and drive faster...not necessarily in that order.

I'm torn on it. The middle part where Dave sings "Ima bullethead....hurt me!" Is my fav part of the tune. I swear Dave sounds like 1978 Dave at that moment on the album. It's really weird, but awesome to hear his voice go back in time like that.

BH sounds like classic VH at it's best to me. I love it. It gets turned up a couple notches when it comes on and sometimes I have to even spin it twice.

Would we agree that now all the excitement has died down there are definitely 2 tiers of tracks on this disc.

'Tattoo', 'The Trouble With Never' and 'Big River' are consistently near the bottom of people's lists.

I would put " Big River " in the top half...one of the best guitar solos on the cd...song just puts you in a great mood

The Trouble With Never, As Is and You And Your Blues I'm just finding I skip over/avoid altogether when listening to the album. Am not saying they're terrible but in comparison to the rest of it they don't really cut it for me. Stay Frosty and Tattoo I enjoy, but are hardly essential to my ears.

ADKOT is slightly...I dunno...about 2/3rds of it I really enjoy, but most of that 2/3rds is comprised of the older tracks the band reworked. When ADKOT works, it works really well. When it doesn't, it comes across as Van Halen music that is almost disposable, which isn't something I associate with a Van Halen lineup that has Roth in it. Thankfully, I'd say it works about 80% of the time.

My issue with "The Trouble With Never" is that it doesn't even sound like VH to my ears. First time I heard it I thought it was in the style of Guns N' Roses, Appetite era. Not that there's anything wrong with that but it didn't sound original. It's also a pretty messy, schizophrenic song that sounds like a bunch of ideas slapped together but not unified.

I'm disappointed with the choice they made as far as ADKOT extracts for the tour.

No shit. It's one of the songs that really made the album worth making for me. I mean I love the whole album. I still listen to it 3 or 4 times a week. As Is and Honeybaby just rip my head off. You and Your Blues is very strong also. Daves lyrics are so great on this with all the nods to other songs. But to each his own I guess. I don't see how it's not one of VH's best songs ever. Its that good for me.

I like the experimental vibe in the intro...and I like the fade out music...the verse riffs sound just a bit too derivative of the verse riffs for Loss Of Control to my ears...I know a lot of people 'round here rank this as one of the best tracks on the album, but I'm just not digging it 100% from start to finish.

    Maybe it'll grow on me.

The recorded performances are solid, but the music itself does seem a bit slapped together without a particular sense of purpose beyond that.

I can agree with this. Pretty much my first impression of it. I think the live videos of it made it grow on me. I really like it now.

The 3rd verse in Big River leading to the solo, look both ways now little guitar screech, but they all pick it back up with Ed's unraveling followed by Dave's whooo just before the chorus.
You And Your Blues & The Trouble With Never are the deep tracks. The one's you really love at the end of the "big night." But I'm a Van Halen fan. Anything over 3 minutes 27 is too long! Just kidding!

Theories on the low placing of these cuts.

I just can't rank them. I've tried, but there's too many that I like equally, and how much I like them is constantly changing too.

Without a doubt, honeybaby... and As Is are my standout favourites. You and Your Blues does nothing for me.

I love the lyrics in Trouble With Never, but musically it's...meh. I think it was thrown together to address the inevitable..."Al said DLR would never....yada yada yada". No reporter will ask that question now, they already have the answer: "that's the trouble with never..."

Bullethead? Love it, but again I think it's the lyrics doing it for me. It just slams Spam!!!

One of their best EVER. It's THAT good! I've let several friends of mine listen to bits of ADKOT and I always start with As Is then HBSD Their immediate reaction is always, Holy shit! Fucking VAN HALEN!!
