Rolling Stones Archive #3: LA Friday 1975

    LA Friday ’75

Mistitled by bootleggers back in the '70s as LA Friday, the recording was actually made on Sunday 13th July 1975, at the final performance of the Rolling Stones' five night residency at the Los Angeles Forum. The show was part of the Rolling Stones Tour of the Americas, which started with a bang, the band playing on a flatbed truck driving down 5th Avenue in New York City, showcasing their new guitarist, Ronnie Wood. The lineup for the show is Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood, Bill Wyman, Ian "Stu" Stewart, Billy Preston, Ollie E. Brown and Trevor Lawrence. Remastered by Bob Clearmountain, the album contains an incredible versions of "Fingerprint File" and "Angie".

Considering Keith was so smacked up during this show that he could barely remain standing, it's the last show I ever thought they would release officially........

...it was Woody's first tour with the band though, and he was on fire. He ain't Mick Taylor, but when he's good, he's damn good. And Billy Preston was a great addition to the band during his short term with them (73-76)

Yeah, I don't get that either. Fucking RIAA Nazis.... Guess you have to find a way to go through a proxy server?

This is one of those cases where the RIAA bastards defeat themselves, because if they don't make the FLAC's available for sale, I will have to look elsewhere.

Get this, Universal "Music" Group: I WILL NEVER FUCKING PAY FOR A LOSSY MP3 FILE!!! So either release the FLACs to the US audience, or don't be surprised if they turn up on a torrent site.

And given that VH is now also signed to UMG, I can guess that label spies will see this. Tell your douchebag CEO to send me an e mail if he has a problem with anything I said.

It's precisely why I haven't bought any of this stuff. I am a HUGE Rolling Stones fan and would probably buy every one of these if they were made available in a lossless format.

Yeah, I can understand if they want to go "digital only" on this archive stuff and not bother pressing CD's, but why in the name of Brian Fucking Jones wouldn't they put the REAL files out there and not a crappy imitation.

I swear to fuck this worked when Brussels Affair first came out. Don't know why they changed the policy.

Leave it to the corporate beancounters to fuck everything up.

They don't have a fucking clue anyway.

Otherwise the business would not be in the sorry state it is in.

I constantly hear people who have worked in the music industry for decades say there is no record industry anymore. It used to be the record label financed a band to go on tour. Now bands have to find corporate sponsors. I'm no fan of record companies and how they screwed over people but I don't want to see entertainers look like race cars, with advertising all over them and the stage. Maybe rock and roll isn't dead but it's gone local. I do most my banking with small locally owned banks now because the big boys frankly suck to do business with. I buy my meat locally because I don't want green slime in it. It seems like local now means quality. We drink micro brews and we buy our bread from local bakeries because the stuff at the chain stores tastes like saw dust. Maybe we will go back to more local entertainment too. I find myself not watching much cable TV or even listening to regular radio anymore. The programing sucks and on the internet or on satellite radio, I have more choices that just being stuck with what some corporate focus group decided I wanted to see or hear.

There's a few songs where Mick clearly fucks up too. You'll notice Honky Tonk Women gains an extra verse, and an extra guitar solo, which seems to be half improvised from Woody and half "hey get the fuck out of here, this is MY solo" from Keef. And Mick seems to forget the first three or four lines to "Street Fightin' Man" entirely. The above video suggests he might have been enjoying the Colombian marching powder that night, so he's as far gone in one direction as Keef was in the other. Made for one interesting show, but as I said, one you never thought would see an official release, given the Stones' previous tendencies to "touch up" their live albums.

Knebworth 76 still had the biggest trainwrecks of that tour though. I still doubt that one will ever see the light of day.

This is a real gem and a total treat to watch . Obviously Keef is a wreck and Mick has to carry this tune . If this is ever officially released as a live DVD / CD I would be greatly interested . This is my favorite era of Stones music . I recently purchased the box set of " Ya - Ya's " , and the DVD's of " Ladies and Gentlemen..." , " Stones In Exile " , and " Some Girls - Live In Texas 1978 " . Kick ass stuff ! This recent raiding of the archives does not hurt my feelings . I hope it continues .

Hell yeah it is. At $9 for a fucking double album, they would easily sell millions of copies of this, if they would allow the real thing to be sold in the US. Yeah, I'm sure the iPod junkies will buy the crappy Mp3 version. Hell if that's the only way you listen to music, you'll probably never notice the difference. But it doesn't work on an actual audio system.

It appears the Stones do have official video of this show. Does this mean another Eagle Rock DVD is imminent?

Interesting lineup on this one.... Woody on bass. Wyman on synthesizer. Might be the only time that ever happened on stage.

Ever since I got my serious speaker set up a few months ago I don't fuck around any more. MP3s are for when you're at the beach or at work or something. That's it. I mostly spin vinyl these days... Man Ford I just picked up a Stones Europe 73 FM LP about a month ago... was so excited. It looked ok in the store but it's all scratched Would have sounded great.

I won't listen to MP3s in my house unless I need to hear something and can't find it. They don't sound right.

OK, now that I've burned this entire show to CD's and listened to it in its entirety on a real stereo, I have a theory about this Stones Archive series....

Given the serious flaws in performances here from both the coke-addled Mick and the smacked up Keef, this couldn't have been either of them who chose to put this out. So I'm thinking Archive #1 - Brussels Affair was Keith's choice. Archive #2 - Hampton 1981 was Mick's choice. And since Woody (and Billy Preston) is the true star of THIS show, he must have been the one who chose to release this show.

So if my theory is correct, I can't wait to see what Charlie picks for Archive #4. I doubt Mr. Watts reads this board, but if any of you lurking Universal Music Group spies have his e mail, I know I'd love to see a fully remastered soundboard from the 1969-70 tour. (Probably not the Altamont show, given the history)
