Holy Crap-Any Info On this? Jason Becker - Yankee Rose - Session Demo

Don't ask me, I merely found this cut while looking for some DLR Band tracks at Youtube. Does anyone have some background on this, as I (sadly enough) really do not know all that much about Becker other than the obvious.

Thanks in advance for the help, gang.

It's been on his website forever.

Go to http://www.jasonbecker.com/ select Discography and then Unheard Recordings

There is a demo of Drop it in the Bucket plus his audition recordings of Yankee Rose, Hot For Teacher and Skyscraper. He says he learned and recorded them all in one night.

HFT is amazing, it's such a pity...

Can you IMAGINE how dangerous DLR's band would have been with Becker on guitar?? What a shame.

Edit: the lick beginning at 2:15 on the "Yankee Rose" demo KILLS me to this day..

Becker had the bluesy feel Eddie had. Steve Vai is a great player but he never had that swanky swagger.

Jason Becker is one of my all time favorites, his playing on ALAE is amazing. It's a shame that he's so sick, God bless him.

I'm very interested to see the "Not Dead Yet" bio-documentary that's coming out about him...haven't heard whether Dave is in it or not?

Here's back when he could verbally explain the 'holy crap' - doesn't mean anyone else can play it, but he makes it sound simple...!

At the time he was coming up there were literally thousands of guitarists who were practicing hour after hour in their bedrooms.

For whatever reason he had some sort of crazy natural ability that made him head and shoulders over the top of them.

That's 'cause it IS simple stuff when you break it down... You just play it with ultra-precision and without too much thought. And that takes HOURS to work it up to such fluidity...

I'm not a guitar player.....not a good one anyway, but this dude had his OWN distinct sound......I think all the great ones have that.

that guy blew everyone away as far as pure technical ability IMO. There is a video of him playing at namm that will just blow you away.

Never heard of any video of Jason playing at NAMM in the early 90's, and a search of YouTube reveals nothing...got a link?

I'm guessing he means the Atlanta guitar clinic video which is in bits all over YouTube but this seems to be the most complete.

The other thing is that he brought the last two songs with him when he joined the band, I've always thought they were the standout tracks on the album.

I'll have to see if I can find it. It may have been on his site also. It may not have been namm either but I think it was.

Exactly. So many of the others sounded the same and they sounded like machines. It's the same on any instrument. I have a friend who got a master's degree in music and his instrument of choice is the piano. He is very technically affluent but his playing is cold. I mean his timing is impeccable but he has no style. He will put you right to sleep. I watching him play at a concert and he played perfect and then another person played and blew him away because the other person had feeling. Some people have it and some don't.

He had it all...the chops, the technique...but more importantly he had feel, TASTE and tone. Never sounded robotic or sterile, and he was inventive with his approach.

The same part and also part of the full one I posted.

Lucky someone filmed it or we would be in an almost Randy Rhoads situation footage wise.

I said it in another thread - anyone else attempting the HFT hammer-on intro as arpeggios (!) - would have come off blasphemous at best, laughable at worst. Becker pulled it off somehow, it's insane.

Anyone know the story of how Dave and Jason ever hooked up in the first place? That would be interesting to hear. Such a shame....wish he could have made more music with Dave....seemed like a really good fit.

Apparently Dave reached out to Mike Varney, who runs Shrapnel records, which had the biggest stable of shred guitarists back in the day...

And never let it be said Dave is heartless... here's Becker's recollections on writing "It's Showtime!" and his time in the DLR band...

    http://www.guitarplayer.com/article/...ctions-/148687

    IT’S SHOWTIME!

I wrote the music and then David Lee Roth wrote the lyrics. I had just been diagnosed with ALS in late 1989. Generally, my energy and creativity were a little down, but I wouldn’t admit it to myself at the time. I got inspired to write this fast boogie because I was thinking that there wasn’t enough good guitar material for the CD yet. I had only written one other piece for the album, “Drop in the Bucket.” I was following Dave’s two former brilliant guitarists, so even with ALS I had to have something amazing and jaw-dropping. Dave was very happy to get this piece. He called me a genius when I played it for him. It was sweet. I didn’t feel like a genius. Eddie and Steve had written awesome, fast, swingy boogies before I did.

Dave was wonderful to me. He knew I was having health problems, and tried to help all he could. He offered his doctor dad’s services. He was very positive and hopeful when talking to me about it. We spent alone time together talking about lots of things: music, health, the world, and Van Halen.

In Vancouver, he had a crush on a “nice girl.” He asked my advice on how to get nice girls. Pretty funny.

When we got back from recording “A Little Ain’t Enough,” we were trying out some new musicians for the tour. When I stood up playing, my legs would shake uncontrollably. I was struggling playing the tunes, too. After the day of auditions, we both decided that I couldn’t tour. The next day there was a big party in a fancy restaurant. He was depressed. I tried to cheer him up by talking about football. I wasn’t as sad as he was. He is a wild, crazy character, but also a feeling person.

Jason Becker in new Guitar Player

Gave this mag interview a quick perusing on my lunch break. What a truly amazing human being this guy is. Said some great things about DLR and the audition demos. I think I'm gonna pick up some of his music this weekend. Any start point suggestions?

Both of the Cacophony albums he did with Marty Friedman are really good, "Speed Metal Symphony" and "Go Off".
Of course "A Little Ain't Enough" (especially for the solo in 'Drop In The Bucket'....that BURNS!!)

And you really have to search for "The Raspberry Jams", but it's worth finding. It's a collection of demos, and most of them had the potential to be excellent Roth solo tunes...

Something tells me if Becker hadn't been stricken with ALS, not only would he be re-defining guitar playing today, Dave's solo career probably would've never lost a step...can you imagine what the follow up to "Little Ain't Enough" would've sounded like??

To be honest, I thought it was a welcome change from Vai. I dig Vai's playing too, but to me Becker just had more feel. His playing just says alot more with less notes. First time I heard ALAE I thought "Hell Yeah!, now we're getting somewhere!". You could almost tell that Eddie was starting to shake in his boots because Dave had managed to win the fucking lottery twice.

Just an awesome player with endless potential, which makes it all the more tragic.

A follow-up to ALAE would've slayed for sure.
