It's actually really good. probably my fave too. The production is bone-dry, and Nuno's playing through a Fender Princeton for all but like 2 songs...very odd, clean tone. But the songs are cool and Nuno is of course, ripping.

Nuno rips shit up on this cd. I think it's also Cherone's personal best performance, even though he busts into shrill shrieking every now and then (Naked, No Respect). Mike Mangini, whom I've talked up in a past thread, absolutely kills it on this CD (plays on most of the tunes) and was phenomenal live. '95 was a strange time for rock. Grunge was going out with the tide as fast as it came in, but if any late 80's early 90's band knew what was best for them, they followed through with a little extra dirt on their uniforms. This CD does just that.

What is wrong with some people here. Let's have some fun. If I want depression, I could just go home early and ask my wife what kind of day she had.

You're right. This place should be more of an antidote than a downer. The sad thing is that being a downer is the way some people around here get high. Go figure.

I always liked Nuno and Extreme. But I don't think Cherone fits with VH. He is Great in Extreme, but not VH.

Nah, it's a years-old Iron Maiden joke with my friends...I used to have a sign up at my desk at an former office gig that said "667: The Neighbor of the Beast" similar to the one in my sig.

As the mighty DLR once said, when asked what he thought about Gary Cherone being in Van Halen after the nixed reunion:

"I think Extreme is short for EXTREMELY BORING"

    Say it, Dave.

It's one of the only times in his career I've heard him directly have a go at another band, especially one that had supported him.

I'm sure it was him being pissed off about the CHerone in Van Halen thing, there are plenty of bands who were far more boring than Extreme.

He's an interesting person. Am not a pro-Mansonite or anything like that, but he did have a unique way of utilizing verbal jujitsu (in parts jailhouse bullshit fused with snippets of random religions and philosophies) in interviews up until the late 1980s...after that, his brain turned completely to mush...there's just something about the guy that is utterly repellant yet fascinating at the same time...the guy demonstrates no remorse to this day for anything he caused to happen...or even accepts any responsibility for any of it.

Having said all that, he should have been put to death years ago.

Dave was on the same page as almost everyone else in the world circa 1996/1997: everyone, save for one person, wanted to see CVH reform. The one person who didn't was Eddie (Alex and Mike would have played with whoever).

I mean, did anybody on these boards today hear anyone else in 1996 expressing a belief that Roth getting back with the band was a bad thing? That the band would have been better off holding onto Hagar? Was there one single fan who was glad Van Halen dumped Roth for Cherone...who thought Gary would be a better fit for Van Halen than Dave?

When considering how Van Halen 3 tanked, Cherone is lucky to get off as lightly in the press from Dave as he did. I'd be willing to bet the light treatment was the result of Cherone wisely not shitting all over the CVH legacy...it's something Hagar could not restrain himself from doing, and he understandably got shit on by Roth for it.

Agreed.. I don't care for VHIII, but I respect how Gary spoke of, and continues to speak of CVH highly

It's easy to pass Extreme of as shitty since Nuno was the only stand out of the band as far as I was concerned. What many don't know about Nuno is that he is actually a lot like Prince. He can literally do it all and has. Can't delve too deep into it at the moment, but I will say that his post Extreme work is very impressive, not just from a guitar playing stand point and he has always been one of the better guitarists I've seen live.

THIS...the dude is sick talented. Plays guitar, piano, and sings better than Cherone. Hugely underrated player and musician.

Dave also told both Gary and Nuno on the ill fated ALAE tour that he was impressed by them and that he thought they could give Van (Hagar) a run for their money. Always thought it was odd that Dave ended up dissing them.

Dave apparently, also said around the time of the Sam & Dave tour, that Gary wouldn't be joining them as he was busy doing the Vagina Monologues. Funny as hell, but harsh.

I still don't really blame Cherone for taking the gig. His band was dying and he gets the call accompanied no doubt by a bunch of BS about Dave, what else was he going to do?

'Thousands of tiny little notes, urging you to let go with music so thin, you feel like you're hearing nothing at all.'

I think that "could have taken on Hagar" compliment was a little sarcastic. I mean, he's practically putting Extreme in the same category as Van Hagar. Nyuk nyuk.

Two bands that were too serious and too try hard, everybody knows that Van Fucking Halen are a bunch of fucking nerds without David Lee Roth The Great.

It helped loads that the creep Ray Daniels was managing both bands at the time. He simply consolidated his interests and cut his overhead by merging the two, to the ultimate detriment of all involved. What's really amazing is that he didn't manage to fuck up Rush over the past 30 years or so in the same manner. Christ, the mind boils over at the thought of Geddy Lee singing and playing bass for Van Halen.

Or singing period. Rush is a great band musically, but Geddy Lee, Axl Rose and that singer for AC/DC should host the "Catarwauling Awards"

Have a death sing off, until they all lie dead on the floor, with blood oozing from their eardrums.

Yep.... Danniels screwed up VH, Extreme, Queensryche, and God knows how many other bands. I still can't believe Rush was able to withstand having that fucking douchebag for a manager their entire career. Maybe he's just not as destructive with Canadian bands?

Ultimately though, given more time Danniels probably would have tried to draft Eddie into Rush. Must admit that the thought of him playing with that rhythm section would be intriguing. But I doubt either Geddy or Eddie would be all that willing to give up their respective Alexes.

Since this seems to have turned into an Extreme thread, I'm not going back to see if any of this was posted already:

Eddie Van Halen on Future Work with David Lee Roth: ‘I See Us Doing This for a Long, Long Time’
    by: Billy Dukes

Eddie Van Halen says the current album cycle with David Lee Roth isn’t a one-time gimmick. This is the future of Van Halen, and the band has a bright future. In an interview with Guitar World the legendary guitarist talks about what once held them back and what now keeps them looking forward.

“It feels more like a band and a family than it ever has, and not just because three-quarters of it is family,” Van Halen says in the current issue of the magazine. “Working with Dave has been very productive. We’re all very opinionated about things, but it’s all for the benefit of the music.”

Van Halen says he’s blessed to be out of a dark period, and working with his brother Alex and son Wolfgang. “I have a wonderful wife, wonderful friends and a son who doesn’t smoke, drink or do drugs … What more could I ask for?”

When reflecting on the band’s past drama and lineup changes, Eddie says “It wasn’t really us, it was people around us. When you’re doing drugs, drinking and partying, you start believing the s–t people tell you. Those days are gone. We’ve gotten rid of peole who don’t belong here.”

While the second leg of the American tour was postponed, the band will pick up again this November in Japan. Eddie Van Halen says that when this cycle finishes, he fully expects to take a break and then pick up writing and recording the next album. “That’s what I hope to do. I’m pretty sure that’s what our intention is.” They’ve also hinted at more 2013 American tour dates.

I believe it's in the movie Beyond the Lighted Stage but Ray Daniels fired Geddy Lee from the band in the early days. So Danniels did fuck up Rush it's just that he was lucky Geddy came back.
