All the drug commercials are very weird for people from Europe visiting the US.

We have almost none, just a few for cold remedies.

Why would I know which drug to choose to treat me, that's my doctor's job...?

I really think that when in the US you are watching TV and people are saying how terrible it is in all the other countries that have a government or single payer system of healthcare bear in mind that a change to your current system would be a nightmare for the TV companies who would lose the revenue from all those commercials.

And then with the side effects, why would one go to their doctor and willingly say "Hey, that sounds good! Put me on THOSE!"

It must work though otherwise they wouldn't spend the money.

Why don't doctors say 'Fuck off you idiot, I'm smarter than you AND did 8 years of study AND have been doing this for years?

The whole thing is ridiculous. Yeah ask around and research your doctor(s) but then let them do their job. BTW did you know we can choose any doctor we want in the UK? Or any surgeon? Same in France, Germany, Canada and the rest. Not details you will hear on your media. Funny that...

The US should have the most fucking amazing universal healthcare on the planet. Sometimes talking to Americans about healthcare feels like trying to talk to scientologists saying 'you do realize you are being screwed?'.

Also quick fact typically most big drugs companies spend around 15% of their income on research and 50% on marketing.

If the human species survives there is so much stuff people will look back on and think was completely fucking insane...

Yeah, and then my employer changed insurance companies, and the doctor I liked didn't use that company. Receptionist says "you can just pay out of pocket." Uh, no.

I bought my house shortly after that and moved further away, his office would have been out of my way.

We get our hearing tested at work every year, and when I was in for my test the woman that runs our health center gasped when I told her I wasn't on any meds.

Well that's the other thing.

Over prescription and over intervention is encouraged in the system.

One of the many reasons that I'm confident that vaccines are a good thing is that a bunch of countries have done the math and worked out that it saves them money to give their populations them. If you have a public system which is always going to be underfunded then that sorts itself out. Also the usual inefficiences about anything to do with government are unlikely to reach the 30% insuarnce companies skim. In any case if you don't like it then pay to go private.

It's all a bit pointless even talking about this because although this was just about the only area Trump had some decent ideas about it would be astonishing if he had the focus to get it through when everyone he is surrounding himself with at the moment would scream No!
