Eddie Enthusiastic About Current Van Halen Lineup

Eddie Van Halen says the current lineup of the band is here to stay – and the only arguments they have today are connected with making their music as good as it can be.

He believes they’re in it for the long haul now, after having got rid of people he believes should not have been part of the band.

Van Halen released A Different Kind of Truth earlier this year after reuniting with singer David Lee Roth and replacing bassist Michael Anthony with Eddie’s son Wolfgang.

Ultimate Classic Rock reports that the axeman has told Guitar World: “It feels more like a band and a family than it ever has – and not just because three quarters of it is family.

“Working with Dave has been very productive. We’re all very opinionated about things, but it’s all for the benefit of the music.”

The band have been through the wars in their 40-year career. Roth is in his third stint as frontman while Sammy Hagar has taken the mic twice while Gary Cherone was singer for three years in the 1990s.

In 2009 they ousted original member Anthony, and even tried to airbrush him off their album covers, replacing him with then-teenager Wolfgang, who hadn’t been born when some of the records were made.

Looking back at their chequered past, Eddie reflects: “It wasn’t really us – it was people around us. When you’re doing drugs, drinking and partying you start believing the shit people tell you.

“Those days are gone. We’ve gotten rid of people who don’t belong here.”

Van Halen completed the first leg of their current tour this week after postponing 30 dates, admitting: “As usual we bit off more than we could chew.”

But when the full cycle is complete, Eddie believes they’ll get to work on another album. “That’s what I hope to do,” he says. “I’m pretty sure that’s what our intention is.”

    Awesome News!

Wow.....remember the days when Ed didn't seem to want to make or release ANY new music unless it was on porn soundtracks? Good to see he is hungry again. I would love another album. I would go see them live anytime they come to my part of town....would never pass that up but I would love more albums first and foremost.

I cannot believe Ed actually said those words...I mean, I could see Al maybe saying that...but Ed? It's
    un-fucking-real. And it's about time.

    Alex ??

He never liked Dave and he still doesn't...

If anyone in the band ever liked Dave, it's Edward...

Nah, I meant the part about them having the wrong people in the band. If that's what he actually meant.

I think Ed realized a long time ago how lousy Sam's song writing and lyrics were....and I think he truly digs Dave's. They have probably learned how to finally deal with each other like human beings who aren't coked up or boozed up all the time.

I have to wonder who exactly those "people around us" were..?

It's easy to assume Hagar but beyond the BOBW 3 songs and 04 tour... his asshat antics weren't involved in the VH camp from 96-present.

How could it be Michael Anthony... He and The Brothers™ never even spoke between 99-04 and after the 04 tour Mike learned of his being replaced by Wolfgang in 2007 via the internet. Was Mike ever even a vocal member of the internal VH camp??

So who was left around within Camp Howdy Doody from 1999-2012?

As I've said before, the "important" relationship in Van Halen is between Dave and Ed. People can talk about Wolfie's importance all they want (and he is integral) but if Dave and Ed ain't getting along, then there's no band. Period.

I think Al and Dave are ok with each other. Sobriety helps.

My only problem with this quote is that it comes off a little bit like he blames others for decisions he backed or made while he was busy impairing his own judgement. “It wasn’t really us – it was people around us. When you’re doing drugs, drinking and partying you start believing the shit people tell you." This shows zero accountability for what went on during what was ultimately his own mental unhinging.

I also don't think it was a stab at Sammy, as much as it was one at Ray Danniels and the like.

I'd say it was a backhanded slap at Sam as well from 2004. I think the great thing is Ed remembered how creative his partnership is with Dave. I think he was playing that generic AOR stuff with Hagar for so long that he forgot how exciting the music was with Dave.

That is correct. I also think that there are some enablers still around who didn't help his cause, but that's a whole other ball o' wax.

Actually I disagree and think the statement is exactly this ball of wax... Spammy and Mike weren't in Ed's camp for any significant time period from 1996 - present. There's a lot of years and bullshit that went on starting 1996 and wasn't many "band members" camped in Ed's cave...

I agree with that. I do think that of the people Ed is blaming, he's omitting some who are still around. There are enablers in the fold. But hey, ya can't scrape off everyone, can ya?

Agreed... I find it difficult to even consider Matt Bruck being anything but an enabler... not to mention being so damned ugly he should wear a cow-bell to warn children and small animals when he's approaching...

Might be referring to managers and producers, and the like, who were taking sides at the time if the original split. Ted siding with Dave, Donn Landee with Ed. The reason I say that is that he mentioned just prior to that the productive relationship with Dave, and making this album is really ghe first time they have worked together at any length in the studio and produced results since '83.

    Well well well....

Everybody finally grew up and realized that there's only one true combination for Van Halen.

So good to hear this. Hopefully this really means something for the future and isn't just lip service in the passion of the moment generated by a successful tour.

I agree 100% --- I've been force-fed too much of the EVH Kool-Aid for the past 20 years to think otherwise.

Ray Danniels was a douchey manager, and Spamborita and Cherone were never in it for the long haul. Dave was 100% ready for all this stuff back in 1996 ---- just listen to his interview on Howard Stern right after the MTV Awards implosion ---- he said all that needed to happen was Eddie to get sober and get his hip fixed and then it's 3-2-1 ignition and lift-off.

Ed and Alex shoulda pulled their heads outta they asses back in '96 and realized that working with Dave on a purely professional level (like they do now) was the key to the grand prize. Plenty of egomaniac rock stars hate each other but can tolerate each other for a couple hours onstage every other night. Everybody can travel in separate buses and hotel rooms. Money is rolling in by the truckload. It's a win-win for everyone involved.

The wasted years of 1996-2007 are purely Ed and Al's fault.

even the rough mixes would've sounded amazing. fuck the haters, and the wolf deniers.

no wonder those nobodies kept twittering how good it was. remember that?

it was. and it is. and why shouldn't they keep it going? if everyone's happy and healthy and having a good $payday, fuck it.
In GW, Ed says there was a more out there version of Honeybabysweetiedoll. Could you imagine? We'll always be left wondering what other goodies are in that damn vault! I like the legacy concept. This band sorely needs to do that. Take our money! It's right here in our wallets! Take it! Just release the shit already!!

I'd say lower than a snake's belly in a tire rut...

VH just doesn't have the ability to move "that" quick... Plus the old farts need to recover from that massively aggressive tour schedule they got roped into and had to cancel/postpone. I think they'll be damn lucky to have caught their breath by Novemeber for the Japan tour... :rolleyes

But when the full cycle is complete, Eddie believes they’ll get to work on another album. “That’s what I hope to do,” he says. “I’m pretty sure that’s what our intention is.”
By far, the thing I care about most. Ed was in a total creative lull for the past decade, evidenced by the lifeless crap he released with Hagar in 2004. Clearly when we saw what kind of shape he was in that year, it's amazing he was even able to stand up. Now that he's sober, now that Wolf is an adult and can push him to make new music and just keep going with this, I'm hopeful we can see a creative rush for the next five years. I love going to the shows as much as anyone, but the shows and the excitement of seeing them live is fleeting; the albums are what last forever. I'm hoping they don't waste any time and get a new album out in early 2014.

I've always felt this way. Just like what the AV geeks in the movie 3 O'clock High who wanted to film the after school fight said, "pain is only temporary, film is forever."

    That's exactly how I feel...

They need to jump in the studio now and throw the rest of those 35 - 40 songs on a disc before they hit the road again...

Ed already said he didn't like the sound of the album (and I agree) and none of the singles took off...

The timing would be perfect for Van Halen to return to New Orleans for the Super Bowl with a bonafide hit off the next album...

    Ok, I'm dreaming...

I thought he said he didn't like the way the guitar and bass recording sounded at Henson and they all agreed to redo those parts at 5150. I would imagine he was happy with that result.

"...got rid of people that don't belong here...." and "..it was the people around us..."

    I immediately thought of Val.

Her telling a daily intoxicated Ed in 1985 that he doesn't need Dave and that all he does is make him miserable.

Yes, although Val is still Wolf's mom - she of course has no influence on Eddie anymore.

I'm satisfied with ADKOT. Another classic VH album and tour at this point would just be icing and cake on top of the last icing and cake. Win win indeed!
