Not really. Well, not apart from the usual: stealing toys from the children's orphan fund.

In some ways, I'm still amazed that the album is as good as it is. With Ed's more recent health issues (which were unknown to me until recent interviews) and the discord that has historically been around the band, I'm still a bit surprised they were able to make an album at all, much less one that kicks ass. Repeated listenings have just reinforced what I felt 6 months ago- the guys were confident and motivated and the result speaks for itself.

For me, my biggest "gainer" over the months has been As Is. I liked it originally, but my appreciation for it has really grown over the months- it's one of the top tracks for me. On a sort of flip side, I was hoping I'd warm up more to Big River, Stay Frosty and TTWN. Didn't happen. I like those tunes, but they weren't able to climb out of my second tier of tunes in to the first tier.

    Anybody else? Thoughts?
I'd have to agree that in many ways ADKOT surpassed my expectations.

I mean, considering what had been put out under the Van Halen name since 1996 along with Roth's last couple of solo efforts, I wasn't really sure there was much juice left in the tank for this band. Having seen a fairly off-night far as Ed went on the 2007/2008 tour, I thought the dude was just washed up and couldn't get his shit together enough to play his old stuff properly, so what chance did the band have at coming up with anything new that was gonna even be listenable or transcend embarrassing...much less actually be any good?

I will also say that some of the tunes which didn't do much for me still don't: those being The Trouble With Never and You And Your Blues.

I like Tattoo. Liked it from the first listen.

One track which I'll readily admit just didn't do much for me but ended up growing on me like a motherfucker was As Is.

It's a good album. Half of it is reworked old demos, but so what?

Honestly, when I think of what 11 years of Sammy Hagar, three of Gary Cherone, a half decade of silence and Mike Anthony leaving and THEN link all of that with Roth's less-than-stellar solo output and outings since 1999, the fact that Roth and The Van Halens came up with the goods just really goes to show that these guys need each other because they just bring out the best in each other.

Yeah, I would have came right out the door with As Is, and then Blood and Fire and You and Your Blues, and maybe even Stay Frosty...

Tattoo shouldn't even be on the album...

I agree with you for the most part but quit hating on Tattoo.I know in comparison it sounds very tame but I think it is catchy as hell.I can't help but smile when I hear it

If it'd been me, I would've gone with China Town as the lead single. Why? It's compact, hard hitting, has signature Ed playing and was a new tune. The new tune angle isn't a huge deal, but would've preempted any potential "it's only a reworked demo" nonsense. As Is would've been a very close second and i easily could've been talked in to it as a lead single. If I wanted to go the "quieter" route for a lead single, I would've gone with Blood and Fire, with You and Your Blues coming in second.

IS this album even close to gold yet ? I'm to lazy to look. Still listen to my version of it (changed the running order) at least once a week.

Went to the RIAA website and they don't show it as Gold, although i could've sworn i read somewhere that it was. So, i suppose as far as the RIAA is concerned, it's not.

In the car these days when I'm alone my running order is Stay Frosty, Big River and Beats workin'. Big River is my favorite now.

1 .China Town- Should have been the first single hands down ! What a mistake.
    2. Trouble With never- Kicks in good here. Love the solo.
    3. Outta Space- Works good here. Might be one of the best songs on the album.
    4. Stay Frosty
    5. Big River- Kind of gets lost at the end of the album
    6. As Is
    7. Honeybaby- Didn't want to break it away from As Is. They work great together
    8. You & Your Blues -Love it
    9. Bullethead
    10 .Shes The Woman
    11. Blood & Fire
    12. Tattoo
    13. Beats Workin' -Not a favorite but love the jam at the end. The album pace is just not that great for me. Love it this way.

I kind of like the way the tracks were sequenced on the album.

I'd agree Tattoo isn't the strongest track on the album, but as a single it was the obvious choice (unless one thinks Dance The Night Away, Pretty Woman and Jump are the best tunes from their respective albums): it was gonna be the most accessible in terms of casual fans.

She's The Woman ups the ante. You And Your Blues is a decent holding pattern.

The album really kicks in hard with Chinatown.

I'd agree that Big River DOES get kinda lost being slotted in towards the end...it's a great ficking track.

I like Beats Workin'/Turn Out The Lights, but the intro seems a bit ripped off from Fools...and also a bit overlong, particularly coming not too far after the extended outro of Stay Frosty two tracks back.

I'd also agree with those who are a little less than thrilled with the overall sound of the album. When I play it loud in the car, it all bleeds together into a sonic mush. It sounds okay at lower levels, but when cranked it loses clarity. Like, I can crank Fair Warning at 11 and not experience a muddyness of sound, you know?

I like Tattoo still. It gets slammed for no reason. Other than the fact they made it a single. I just didn't want Blood & Fire at the end. As Is & Honeybaby are in a great slot so I didn't want to move them to much. To me with the early albums they always seemed to kick off with the best tunes. Thinking Woman & Children and Fair Warning. So thats why I kicked it off with China Town.

Far as WACF, I was never a HUGE fan of ATCWR...definitely not in comparison to the rest of the album.

I dunno, for me most of the Van Halen tracks I liked the best weren't at the beginning of the albums. Usually, they were in the middle (am thinking along the lines of I'm The One, Atomic Punk, Somebody Get Me A Doctor, Outta Love Again, Romeo Delight, Sinner's Swing, Hear About It Later, etc.)
