Poor Ed! Can't this guy just get a break?
I have never heard of this before. What causes it?
The heart is on the left. The blood is red.
Here's a good summary of the facts from Web MD:
Looks like surgery is only required in the most extreme cases. I know my dad never had to go through it.What is diverticulitis?
Diverticulosis happens when pouches (diverticula camera) form in the wall of the colon camera. If these pouches get inflamed or infected, it is called diverticulitis. Diverticulitis can be very painful.
What causes diverticulitis?
Doctors aren't sure what causes diverticula in the colon (diverticulosis). But they think that a low-fiber diet may play a role. Without fiber to add bulk to the stool, the colon has to work harder than normal to push the stool forward. The pressure from this may cause pouches to form in weak spots along the colon.
Diverticulitis happens when feces get trapped in the pouches (diverticula). This allows bacteria to grow in the pouches. This can lead to inflammation or infection.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms of diverticulitis may last from a few hours to a week or more. Symptoms include:
Belly pain, usually in the lower left side, that is sometimes worse when you move. This is the most common symptom.
Fever and chills.
Bloating and gas.
Diarrhea or constipation.
Nausea and sometimes vomiting.
Not feeling like eating.
How is diverticulitis diagnosed?
Your doctor will ask about your symptoms and will examine you. He or she may do tests to see if you have an infection or to make sure that you don't have other problems. Tests may include:
Blood tests, such as a complete blood count (CBC).
Other tests, such as an X-ray or a CT scan.
How is it treated?
The treatment you need depends on how bad your symptoms are and whether you have an infection. You may need to have only liquids at first, and then return to solid food when you start feeling better.
If you have an infection, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics. Take them as directed. Do not stop taking them just because you feel better.
For mild cramps and belly pain:
Use a heating pad, set on low, on your belly.
Relax. For example, try meditation or slow, deep breathing in a quiet room.
Take medicine, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, for example).
You may need surgery only if diverticulitis doesn't get better with other treatment, or if you have problems such as long-lasting (chronic) pain, a bowel obstruction, a fistula, or a pocket of infection (abscess).
How can you prevent diverticulitis?
You may be able to prevent diverticulitis if you drink plenty of water, get regular exercise, and eat a high-fiber diet. A high-fiber diet includes whole grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables.

Shit - as much as Eddie has pissed me off in the past, I still love the guy and wish him all the best. He's been through too much medical crap in his life - hope this is the last of it.
Stay Frosty!
THE DAY IS DONZO LET'S HAVE SOME FUNZO!!
Great post #5, FORD. The other thing the vast majority of us don't do is DRINK LOTS OF WATER.
Not sprite, mountain dew, 7 up or Mexican coke... H2O. Us Aussies have that drummed into us early.
ford, you of ALL people. damn. damn. and double goddammit.
Hate to hear of anyone with a serious illness no matter the cause, self induced or otherwise. Wish Ed all the best.

Here's how good comes from not so good:
Ed recuperates from his latest health issue(s). Dave addresses any physical vocal issues if there are any and/or gets in '07-'08 form. Band releases new album late next summer and hits the road next fall. Roth Army rejoices.
Well, Ed hasn't had a drink since 2008. Which makes me think that he's been secretly hiding this disease for the past few months so he dosen't worry the fans, only now does he has a resurgence and its bad enough that he has to get surgery to get it taken care of. In one respect, its a good thing that this isn't colon cancer or anything of the sorts, and according to Kody Van Halen's FB page he isn't in the hospital anymore...so hopefully this means the prognosis is good.
I don't think alcohol is always the cause, but the cumulative effects of years on the bottle probably ain't helping things.
Had a freaking nightmare last night, starting with Ed getting sick, Dave decides to go on a solo venture again, Ed recuperates and is pissed at Dave going solo, Ed calls the 55 sucker to get even at Dave...Oh wait its 2012 and not 1984...
Now who`s that babe with the fab-u-lous shad-ow?
Van Halen can never play summer gigs anymore --- unless they book the outdoor sheds.
Dave's blower rants are some serious shit --- he won't back down on that issue esp. since he's getting older and his vocal cords are more sensitive to chilly A/C drafts.
However, fans won't tolerate being stuffed inside a steaming hot arena in the summer. We just survived record-breaking heat in the Northeast and I sure as hell won't pay to stand inside a 95F arena for 2 hours.
If Dave needs to have his way and yet not bankrupt a tour --- all future VH tours will need to operate between Oct. and June in the U.S.
I have had this for 20 years. Been lucky to avoid big surgery so far.
There is NO way he has been hiding this for months. Its like an appendix bursting a pouch gets infected doesn't get treated and it eventually bursts. Its days not months and its sudden like an appendix ruture when it occurs and no he probably was barely able to stand let alone get on stage. Diet fiber etc is huge with this but in large part it is structural just the way the intestine is built, some folks have bigger pouches and the ones on the bends of the intestine track tend to get infected.
Get well soon Eddie and go to the damn doctor sooner putz.
One break, comin' up!
Poor Ed? Breaks? Really? I wish Ed the speediest of recoveries and a long and prosperous life. Butt-fucking-pul-eeze!! This guy is wealthy, immensely talented, and is fortunate enough to be so after making some egregious career and personal choices, and I'm sure this is related to some of those choices...
Best Wishes For Ed & Family. Get well SOON!
What?? You're just ready to assume any delay means Eddie's back in the drunk tank again or something?
I guess that's always possible, but it doesn't seem likely this time. However, it wouldn't be at all surprising to know that decades of alcoholism and a poor diet were contributing factors in causing this condition.
A few posters over at VH News desk said they've had relatives who died from this....
Here's a few more details from CNN...
(CNN) - Eddie Van Halen is home recovering from surgery.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist had an operation for diverticulitis, an inflammation and infection of the intestines.
According to a rep for the rock group Van Halen, the guitarist first developed the condition while on tour.
When he came off the road, he had a serious flare-up.
Eddie Van Halen spent three weeks in the hospital after surgery to remove the infected intestine resulted in another infection when he popped a few stitches.
His home recovery is expected to last four to six months.
Van Halen's tour dates for November are being rescheduled for next year.
CNN
My Grandfather was one of them. He was 86 when he died.
His diverticulitis was a result of a condition he had called Ulcerative Colitis which was a result of limited blood flow to the abdomen, he was diagnosed with other ailiments before, he had a heart condition, and he's had bouts of pneumonia and Congestive Heart Failure beforehand.
Eddie I think is lucky that this happened now that he's healthier, if he didn't quit drinking in 08 and get healthier, this probably would have been a much bigger affair, and would have probably killed him
Ulcerative Colitis is nothing to fuck with, either... and agree had this happened a few years ago it probably would have been disastrous.
my best wishes for Ed to have a speedy recovery.(speed being relative to the condition, of course)
i feel badly for him AND his fellow band members...this really sucks for all of them.

Hmmmm...based on that CNN report, it sounds like Ed's health was a big reason for the rest of the tour being postponed then cancelled. Diverticulitis is no joke and I'm glad he's recovering.
It sounds like Dave is more than happy to "take the hits" in the press for the band. Everyone (outside of the diehard fans) assumes that it's Dave that was the problem (poor vocals, fighting), and now we are learning that Ed wasn't well. Get well soon Edward.
This has never been a band that was the poster child on how live a healthy life style.
Band has been horrible about hiding they can't stand each other and very happy to toss each other under the bus.
There's no conspiracy and should not be a surprise that as they get into their 60's they have assorted health struggles. Really there is only one Keith Richards, everyone else struggles with it as they age after a driving 90 mph for 40 years.
After all the years and all the bullshit from VH... it's a struggle to fight the easy leap into cynicism when assessing their actions and motives... I know my knowledge of touring contracts indicated something far more serious than "we bit off more than we could chew" had to be in play to postpone and then cancel a top tier touring leg.
I admit to calling bullshit on all this... which it was. But then the rational side of me says... hang on there nimrod... A serious health issue is a private matter even if it involves a public figure. Damn I hate rational thought sometimes... but I digress. I guess you could call it "Dave taking the heat". My grumpy side buys that.
But on the other hand... it most likely was Dave and Russell, Ed's and Kody's friend, business partners and butt sniffers respectively, taking the point, keeping it simple but vague to protect the privacy of someone he cared about. When you boil that down... it's an admirable thing, probably not worthy of our criticism or praise... unfortunately Dave and the VH brothers paved this road... so they have to navigate the twists, turns and major potholes along with us...
Heard this on the radio the other day. I have reflux (a similar condition) and it is serious pain.
Get Well Ed!!!!
Cato put this in the Japan tour thread, but it also applies to Ed's surgery, so....
Love and support from all of us in Japan. Get well soon. Love, Dave
