    Jason Becker Documentary

09-Oct-12Jason Becker Documentary To Be Screened In New York City Next Month

The documentary about guitar wizard Jason Becker called, Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet, will be screened in New York City at IFC Center on November, 9th at 10 PM. Tickets will be available beginning October 12th.

A guitar prodigy, Jason Becker burst onto the music scene at the tender age of 13, garnering notice from major industry players. In 1991, at age 19, Jason was hired as the lead guitarist in David Lee Roth’s band, the most coveted guitar gig at the time, but he never made it on tour. Doctors diagnosed him with Lou Gehrig’s disease and said he would never make music again, let alone live to see his 25th birthday. Twenty-two years later, without the ability to move or to speak, Jason is alive and making music with his eyes.

Jason Becker : Not Dead Yet is a feature-length documentary film that tells the incredible story of a guitar legend who refuses to give up on his dream of being a musician despite the most incredible odds. It is a story of dreams, love, and the strength of the human spirit.

The film has been made with the full co-operation of Jason and the Becker family, who have given their consent for this to be the first feature-length documentary film about his life. They have provided their entire family archive of never-before-seen photos and footage.

Fourth, Let me know if you're thinking about hitting this thing up. Maybe we could meet up and raise a beer in Jason's name.

I don't think 'looking forward to seeing this' is the right phrase, but you all know what I mean.

I imagine it will be a DVD release by the time I get round to it, but I'm certainly curious to see it.

A guy in the movie biz was on a local station the other morning. The Power Trip. With ex Viking Mike Morris. He said he saw this, and thought it was great. I have no idea who he was. I wasn't paying attention until I heard Jasons name come up.

    Who would have thought?

This is a man who says he has no albums from after 1959 and he was saying how great Becker was at guitar. Looks as though it's pretty much going straight to DVD, even my local arthouse cinema isn't showing it.

Saw it here in Denver a couple weeks ago. As a film, I wasn't crazy about the way it was put together. But, of course, it's an amazing story. I was very disappointed that Dave didn't contribute in ANY way. I wonder why Dave didn't at least grant an interview because it would have helped the film a lot. Oh well.

Dave gave him his big break. I'm sure Jason Becker is forever grateful for that, and acknowledges that A Little Ain't Enough is his most well known piece of work. Without Dave, he would of been appreciated by guitar enthusiasts, but not as well known.

But yeah, it certainly would of been cool to have some input from Dave, or at least Bob Rock.

Maybe but have you ever read or heard of Roth doing anything for or with Becker since?

Steve Vai even Eddie Van Halen yes but where is David Lee Roth?.

When the guy out of Lynyrd Skynyrd got wasted, killed his girlfriend and paralyzed himself in a car crash they kept him on as a musical director and donated a tour earnings to charity.

Maybe Dave did a lot behind the scenes, maybe he gave him a big payout but if he did it's been kept very quiet.

Nothing new at the Army, I see this was discussed 7 years ago here...

I love watching him play...he's such a freak...

Glad he's still alive...glad he's still inspiring (me at least)...

and glad playing for Roth on one album brought him to the masses...

In the grand scheme...didn't have the output and the longevity as a healthy lead guitarist to ever be compared to the greats...but you watch him play for five minutes...

and you can see that if you close your eyes and listen...then connect him with some of the folks he was starting to connect with in the late 80's...he would have been a mega-star in the rock world...

but I'll say this...everything happens for a reason...and I really...REALLY wish that there would be focus on this guy...

the fact that he's not only still alive...but still able to put out musical relevance...is literally a miracle...
"Van Halen was one of the most hallelujah, tailgate, backyard, BBQ, arrive four hours early to the gig just for the parking lot bands. And still to this day is. It's an attitude. I think it's a spirit more than anything else is."

Just watched this today, and i thought it was very moving. According to the film, there were only ever 2 photographs taken that included Dave and Jason, one of which was taken by Jason's uncle and that appears in the film. The guy never gave up on life though, which is amazing considering.

That kind of sounds odd nowadays but of course this was before smartphones. Often bands wouldn't have pictures from the studio and by the time all the publicity sessions for tour programs and interviews he was already gone.

I noticed when they rolled the credits, they have "Hot For Teacher" listed as "Written by Edward Van Halen, Alex Van Halen & David Lee Roth".

I'm not sure if it's more odd that there are almost no pics of Jason with Dave, or the fact that Dave never acknowledges Jason Becker.

I wondered the exact same thing. Why is it DLR doesn't speak of Jason Becker or appear in the documentary.

Not 100% sure, but I have a theory it may be due to some of his comments from a Metal Sludge interview from 2003. I ran across this a while ago.

Check out his answer to question # 4.
