It's Rove's reaction - and to a lesser degree, Romney's - that makes me think there's truth to this.
Karl was visibly shocked on live FAUX cameras. Mittens was reportedly "shellshocked", and there's no way he could have believed he actually had more votes. I'm sure his son Tagg had promised him that their Hart Intercivic machines would do exactly what they expected them to do when they bought the company.
Some states are slowly coming around to the realization that reverting to paper ballots is the way to go...
Rove I wasn't THAT surprised by, because he has always talked up a lot of smack (he claimed that W was going to win in 2000 by 7 points), but Romney did appear to be caught offguard when he gave his concession speech, as if the thought of him losing had never crossed his mind until that night.
Gerrymandering is the only reason the Repukes still control the House of Representatives, that's for sure. Sadly, it's also the reason Dennis Kucinich will soon be unemployed, since he was forced to run against another Liberal incumbent in the primary, and since the new district boundaries favored her voters, she won.
The main reason Romney lost is not enough of the conservative base bothered to get out and vote or voted for a third party candidate. The Democrats managed to get their base out to the polls better.
My uncle was a very well liked member of his community but never could win elections in his district. He was a Democrat and his district was a Republican district. So yeah, what district you are in makes a difference. It's a bunch of partisan bullshit. Both parties have their good and bad. We would be better served if people actually researched the candidate instead of just voting the party line.

I know the UK only has a population of 60 million but we still have an entirely paper ballot and usually most of the votes are counted in about 4 hours - it can be done.
Via manual count, machine, fingers and toes...how? What method do they use to count?
Also, no matter the method of voting, they're all open to cheating in their own way.

They just manually count them. The country is divided into constituencies of 80 000 or so and each locally hire a bunch of bank tellers who are used to counting cash for a job and they just get on with it.
It's not rocket surgery, why does the US seem to fuck it up every time?

All the methods certainly are open to the possibilities of cheating, although with paper ballots there is a tangible, physical element that has to be manipulated, whereas with many of the voting machines there are fairly easy methods to place a bypass within the circuitry of a machine that can flip whatever amount of votes a person desires a certain way (the hardware is small, compact and easily installed and would be hard to detect unless someone knew what they were looking for) and leaves no traces at all.
What kind of question is that? You know why. It's not incompetence.
