For me the hardest thing was tuning the damn guitar. Electronic tuners were very expensive when I started to play and nobody had them, if they did it was usually a big ass Petersen strobe tuner. You hit a note on a piano, used a pitch pipe, or used a tuning fork. I took me forever to get my ear good enough to get the pitch right on all the strings. Once someone showed me how to tune using harmonics man for me that was easier. Oddly enough that is how you synchronize both props on a two propped airplane. If they are out of phase you hear the difference.
Some people just are born with good ears for me I had to work at it but once I figured out what was going on there, it became easier.
Before tuners I used to use the G at the start of Yankee Rose and the E at the start of Running with the Devil if you are tuning down.

I simply memorized the frequency of the opening riff to Priest's "Breaking The Law". Key of A @440 hz. I can hear the riff in my head in the proper key of A, and I just tune the A string to my memory. Works a charm.
