I remember this show when it came out. I remember Tommy discussing the view of cars tail lights trailing away from the outdoor venue at the start of one of their Kilroy shows. I think people actually witnessed a Sammy Hagar show before bailing on Stynx. That's bad.

As to if they're "assholes" or not, I couldn't fucking care less. I wasn't there to make friends with them, I just wanted to hear the classic songs played.

I don't really take one side or the other in the Styx wars, since I really haven't given a shit about them in 30 years. It definitely WAS the Kilroy album that scares me away, so I guess Dennis gets the blame for that. The actual idea behind the album was good - a statement against religious fascist theocracy - it just failed in the execution. Should have left the rock operas to Roger Waters and Pete Townsend.

I'm just not a fan of scab bands though, and that's what this so-called "Styx" is. If Chuck Panozzo is playing with them again, that's a good thing, but it would mean he's the only original member on stage.

    Oh please....

That's like saying a true Beatles reunion would have needed Pete best.

Tommy and James are Styx. Dennis is a poof, and John P. is dead.

I do know someone who was part of the Dennis DeYoung tour, and they told me he's an absolute DICK to work for.

If you want to talk true "scab" bands, check out the FOREIGNER currently milking the Casino Circuit for 20K a night.

Don't like the scab "Foreigner" either. Of course I didn't have any use for the real Foreigner after their third album.

When Styx plays now do they do any of the DeYoung songs? If so, who does the vocals?

Well if you ever start to care one way or the other take a listen to First Time and you will be cured very quickly.

Makes me wonder which cheese ballad started the ballad for profit movement that became a staple for a while.

Well, you could trace ballads by hard rock bands all the way back to Zeppelin and Aerosmith, I guess. But where it really started to take over and become a commerical cash in, would probably be Styx with "Babe". And then once Van Hagar came in with the Velveetafests on 5150, all the hairbands came back with all that sickening shit that dominated radio of the late 80s.

I do like Lawrence Gowan, he is the only one other than Dennis that I can see fronting Styx. He's a great keyboard player and a great singer. He didn't really sound good 2000-2003 but when they got Ricky Phillips (former Whitesnake member) on bass, he began to really adopt his own style as opposed to mimicking DDY. Chuck Panozzo still plays for them, but because of his HIV, I assume that he is required to take months off if he even catches the slightest hint of a sniffle, but he dosen't let his sickness rule his life. I give serious props to that man.

But you know what, Dennis is happy with his own act which is pretty good. I saw him twice at the Paramount Theatre. In a way it's kind of like there is two Styxes. One Styx is Tommy and JY's band, and the other Styx is Dennis' band. In short, I don't really want them to reunite, if they do, they're going to start fighting like two girls over a shirtless Chris Hemsworth.

I think Babe helped but that was 1979. About 3 years before that Kiss had a little number that was a large contributor to this as well.

When Peter Criss would sit onstage singing this, all the women in the audience would start playing with themselves.....

To be On Topic, the only time I saw Styx live was on a video, shot during the Kilroy tour. Caught In The Act or something like that, I'm baked, fuck off. Anyway I thought songs like Snowblind or Rockin The Paradise were cool, so I listened to Paradise Theatre (even bought the vinyl, with a "laser side" - fans & collectors know what I'm talking about even if my English is quite miserable tonight), and fell "in love" with that song Nothing Ever Goes As Planned (or something). It was 12 years ago. I'm 34 and in France, Styx have NEVER been played on the radio. I still Love this song, this album kicks ass, now I'm off to bed and so are you, cause I see your eyelids going down.

Paradise Theatre kicks ass, no doubt about it. It's arguably Styx's last good album even though Edge of the Century has its moments.

Listening to Paradise right now (Too Much Time On My Hands playing).. You can't take this "Rock-your-ass" side off of them. Even though...

Always thought Styx sucked. Lame band, lame songs.

There were only a few ballads. And they weren't about losing pussy. Tedwouldn't allow it. Besides the best live version I ever heard of Renegade was with Ted on guitar. I think the one from their Uprising dvd is on You Tube. Shit they blewaway half the 90's bands live that I ever saw. Except maybe STP.

Yeah, but flip it a different way...

Not a huge Styx fan myself, but every time they're played on the radio almost without exception it's a song DeYoung sang lead on.

I'd be willing to wager that Styx's biggest hits were ones that DeYoung sang and wrote. Not talking quality, which in music is subjective, but economics: without DeYoung's contributions, Styx wouldn't even be worth talking about (inasmuch as they are anyway).

Also, what are the odds that people who go to see Styx these days, where Styx is part of a triple bill including, say, Kansas and REO Speedwagon...what are the odds that the majority of that audience is comprised of "hardcore Styx fans"?

    Slim and none.

The majority of the audience are made up of people who only know the hits, and the overwhelming majority of those hits were sung by DeYoung.

In a larger sense, fuck the lot of 'em, DeYoung included.

I mean, it's Styx. Who gives a fuck?

I loved Styx. Crystal Ball, Grand Illusion, Equinox...and for the record "Crystal Ball" was written and sung by Tommy Shaw. "Boat on the River" is one of my all-time favourite songs!

You would win that bet. The DeYoung stuff was more radio friendly and did better on the chart. I think Too Much Time was Tommy's biggest. Sadly, I'll bet the majority of the audience at those triple bills don't even know DeYoung is missing.

That doesn't mean that it should have been, or should be, DeYoung's way or the highway.....

It's good that you loved Styx: to each their own.

I wouldn't necessarily say I hated Styx...they've just never been a band that was really important to me.

As Kristy often says: "[Such and such] a band is good, but they're no Led Zeppelin."

They were never important to me....I have never owned any of their records, though I did see them live once.

I also think Paradise Theater was their last good album. Can't deny they were a good, solid, hard rock band born out of the heartland of America.

Wanna know something? I know you don't but wtf.
I only have TWO Styx albums. Cause I only know those two (apart from that diamond called 'Crystal Ball' - the title track, I 've never heard the album - and the terrible Roboto shitty song).
    - Cornerstone
    - Paradise Theatre

And I deeply think that a song like 'Eddie', on Cornerstone, buries the whole Paradise album. Styx could Really Rock, 'Eddie' (like the one we know and worship) is the proof.

The only version of Beth that didn't make me want to vomit was the unplugged version from 1995. Still a sappy assed mellow song, but at least it was acoustic guitars and not the Velveeta string orchestra....

True Dat. Ezrin can be good (Alice), but he can suck too. Even though I Worship The Elder & Revenge (I'm not a KiSS fan), Ezrin can be boring. Beth is one evidence.
