I read somewhere recently that there are far more LICENSED places to purchase firearms in the US than Grocery stores.
It seems like a simple start to a solution would be to cut down the source by 90 percent and track the weapons a little better.

Sometimes guns are regulated like cars. In NYS, you have to pass a rigorous background check AFTER submitting four essays from people who know you and attending a gun safety course. I believe one also has to provide some semblance of a reason why they need a handgun in written form...
