Is there some rule that Bond films are banned from getting nominations in main categories?

    1. Screenplay for Skyfall was majestic. Criminal to neglect it. Cinematography was superb. Hope it at least wins that category.

    2. Christoph Waltz is up against heavy talent in the Best Supporting Actor category, but he deserves to win. He was robbed when he was nominated for Inglorious Basterds but did not get the statue.

    3. Good to see Joaquin Phoenix back.

    4. Django Unchained is not going to win for best picture. Not against those other films.

    5. Wow. Amazing The Hobbit was nominated for anything. Actually got 3 categories.

Though for the most part, the Grammys have a bunch of bullshit, the Oscars usually have worthy candidates and winners.
Friend of mine is a voting member of the Academy, tomorrow I am going to go to her pad to listen to a bunch of stuff that is up for possible nominations.

Although Daniel Day Lewis is probably going to get it for Lincoln, I loved Denzel Washington in Flight.

Lincoln and Django aren't out here yet.

I take it Lincoln is a hagiography and glosses over the fact he was a racist who it could be argued had a large part in causing the death of more Americans than anyone else in history?

The next time an actor is coming out with a load of BS about the difficulty of their craft or more broadly telling us how they think the world should be run, it's worth remembering that they 'work' in a job that a fucking nine year old can master and reach the absolute pinnacle of their profession in....

I saw Lincoln yesterday... really one of the best movies I've seen in years in that genre.

Had to look up hagiography... not a common term here. I'd say no... the movie didn't really position him in some saintly fashion. In many ways it portrayed him as a more common man with intelligent insight and good story teller. The main plot was focused on the dirty aspects of playing Washington politics that led up to passing of the 13th amendment. Even Lincoln himself pulled some dirty moves to get things aligned.

My favorite part was Lincoln telling a story about when Ethan Allen went to Britain to meet with the monarchy after the Revolution. He had to use the bathroom and found a picture of George Washington hung over the toilet or whatever they called them in the water closet. When he returned the English outfits asked him what he thought of the placement of the picture... he paused and stated it was one of the greatest things he'd seen... aghast they asked what do you mean? He said... "No faster way to get an Englishman to shit than the sight of George Washington!"

The British monarchy at that time were more like a bunch of horrible greedy Germans than English.

There seems to be a real mythology that has been created around early US history which I thought would be box office poison for the film to take on.

Everything is always grey in history when dig into it properly, on the whole people are nicer nowadays than they ever were then...

Is it a bit over long?

It's not out here yet although Tarantino has being doing a lot of media over here over the last week.

Seemed like it was over two hours, though I didn't time it. It's pretty good. And funny watching Jamie Foxx almost gleefully shoot up all the people that deserved it in the film (including Samuel L. Jackson, who's nearly unrecognizable until he speaks).

The guy that was the main Nazi in "Inglorious Basterds" is a good-guy in this, and gives another great performance, one worthy of a best supporting actor" nod for sure.

I am surprised that 'Lawless' didn't pick up any nominations - there were some fantastic performances in that (particularly Tom Hardy).

Dunno if I've said this here before, but I HATE it when the films I like get an award and/or nomination.

    Ruins the fuckin' box art.

I WAS pleased that Bam Bam Bigelow's relative won in that year instead of the alien smurfs.

    Bam Bam Bigelow RAWKS!

    Cheers! :bottle:

Washington WAS great in Flight. Just his presence alone was enough to carry the movie even when the direction and script became a bit predictable about halfway in for a good, long stretch of the film.
