Not really. A couple a day with two off per week and one day to splurge is probably realistic. There are things you can take that help, but for the most part anyones' liver will survive that...

No ginger ale is not the same as ginger beer. Ginger ale is milder and used as a mixer usually for whisky.

It may well but your liver doesn't recover that quick. Taking a couple of days off isn't enough time it has to be much longer. Also splurges are bad.

I say all this because that is the science but don't act on it at all.

Also while I'm raining on our parade.

The whole 'a moderate amount of booze is good for you' argument is based on a couple of things which aren't helpful to us.

As other people have alluded to in this thread, beneficial amounts of alcohol are tiny, at the level of a mouthful of wine a week, communion levels of booze.

The other reason people would cite is that non drinkers have a higher mortality rate than people who just drink very moderately. It turns out this is very probably a statistics thing and that they have a higher mortality rate because people who are ill don't drink. Correlation <> causality kind of thing.

Say for example you have a year of chemo before checking out with cancer you may well not drink for that year because you feel like shit and that affects the figures.

In capsule form you don't even know you ate fish oil.
I take MegaRed krill oil. It's spendy but it's one of only a few that passed the test of hundreds on the market. There is so much crap product out there. They just put anything into a capsule and call it what they want. Gee, if you can get fish oil at the dollar store, where do you think that came from? Yikes!

Ginger beer and ginger ale are not the same thing. Modern Ginger Ale is a Canadian invention. Invented by John McLaughlin for Canada Dry in 1907.

I always get hung up on this talk of mortality rates... In my experience... light, regular, heavy and even 100% non-drinkers... every last one of them have a 100% mortality rate. No one escapes here alive.

Then trying to distinguish if you check out at 65 -vs- 75 or 85, 90, 95... what ever age in the range of "old"... Who's really getting short-changed on the mortality measures..?

Everything in moderation. Basically, don't guzzle the booze like an idiot every day of the week and use a little common sense when you do. Beer is way too tasty and fun for me to jeopardize it by abusing it like I'm still 18.
My karma just ran over your dogma.

    Well yeah.

I think I saw a figure saying that over 50% of people over 80 had a degree of dementia.

I was talking to a relative last weekend who is 87, brain fine, walking with a zimmer but decent health and she was pretty much saying that it was pointless for her to be alive.

She's wealthy enough, has quite a lot of friends. isn't religious but now her husband has died seems to be pretty ambivalent about the whole thing.

I find that kind of comforting. It's good news I think if we don't go kicking and screaming to the grave

One thing I've noticed with older relatives and folks with dementia is most the time they are quite content and happy. I guess because they no longer have an awareness of their situation and surroundings... they're just blissfully floating around in whatever world they are imagining at the moment.

The hard part when they do get frustrated and angry when they do get lucid enough to realize they can't do something they want to anymore. But the worst is when they are pissed off but don't know why... But luckily an hour later they don't even remember being pissed.

My Dad is 90 and drank moderately all his life... glass or two of wine or beer every day. His brain is still with him and the body mostly works. I don't figure we'll have him with us much longer... but thankful for the time I've had.

Those are the worst. A few years back I spent a lot of time in Southern Illinois and got to experience dry counties. It's mind blowing when you've never experienced it..

This one's dry too. But most of the towns have liquor by the drink so it's not an issue. And Sunday sales too, after noon. So the days of having to buy your Sunday beer on Saturday are over. Liquor stores are closed on Sundays tho.

Jack Daniel's is a brand of sour mash Tennessee whiskey that is the highest selling American whiskey in the world.[1][2] It is known for its square bottles and black label. It is produced in Lynchburg, Tennessee by the Jack Daniel Distillery, which has been owned by the Brown-Forman Corporation since 1956.[3] Despite being the location of a major operational distillery, Jack Daniel's home county of Moore is a dry county, so the product is not available for consumption at stores or restaurants within the county. However, the distillery does sell commemorative bottles of whiskey in the White Rabbit Bottle Shop, but due to Tennessee state law it cannot sell whiskey on Sunday.[
Jack Daniel's is actually made in a dry county. If you take the distillery tour they go,"Wiskey, whiskey everywhere and not a drop to drink." Why countys went dry is there was such a drinking problem with the men, the wives politically organized and pushed the politicians to make booze illegal. This is where the national prohibition came from but because of all the resulting gangster violence it was repealed. Some countys still hold onto prohibition. Oddly enough where they make all the bourbon and whiskey. I think people must have been drunk all the time and completely useless due to the easy access of booze. The wives got fed up and pushed their husbands to sobriety with the law.

No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!

I lived in Utah for awhile. Bars can't serve mixed drinks unless they are a private club. If you go to the bar at the downtown Marriott the bartender can not serve you let's say Jack and Coke. Across the hall is a liquor store. You can go over and buy a whole fifth of Jack Daniel's. The bartender can serve the Coke and you pour your Jack in yourself.

So in Utah you don't buy a drink. You buy a drunk. They had great state liquor stores though. The prices were reasonable and they had great selection of beers, wines, and of course the hard stuff.

Here we call that brown bagging. And restaurants in dry towns can get a brown bag permit which allows the patrons to bring in your own booze to have with dinner. They serve "mixers" and you add your own liquor to the drink. Or you can bring in beer. It's fun when you're 21 but seems like too much work now

LMAO!!! That is hillarious! Imagine coming to a restaurant and waitor asks you what you'd like to drink and you go "Don't worry about that, I brought my own"

I can't imagine many restaurant owners (and even the help) are happy with this. Liquor is one of the biggest boosters of the bottom line...
