There seems to be an orgy of concerted claims from various pundits that conservatism is on the decline, but I do seem to recall very similar claims (from some of the same sources, mind you) in the 2004 immediate post W re-election period that were stating the exact opposite and predicting an eclipse of the Democratic Party for years to come.
What there DOES seem to be an abundance of within the Republican Party right now is just denial. It is understandable that there are conservatives who want to resist letting go of principles that define them as a political movement: principles are only meaningful if one adheres to them even when there is a cost for doing so. What is less easily understood is how some within the party think it's just a matter of public relations and softening the message as a means of recapturing the social tone of the population, particularly regarding societal attitudes of younger voters, who with each passing generation are less resistant to former hot-button issues as gay rights, drug legalization and immigration.

Focus groups in 2008 often hung on a quandry "independant" voters found themselves in: they felt they didn't know enough about Obama, but were scared to vote for McCain because if he died Palin would be president.
She's done nothing since then to improve on perceptions of her 4 years ago. In point of fact, all she does is fire up the wingnuts in the conservative movement that put less rabid potential GOP supporters off from voting for any GOP ticket.
