"Song To Soul" available on DVD

This is the latest product from me. the Japanese VH special show called "Song To Soul", which was aired last summer is now available on DVD.

this show was re-broadcasted a few weeks ago with additional interview with Roth. I put both versions on a disc.
plus, I put a short segment on there as bonus(Best Hit USA).

I posted them on YouTube but the quality is not that good because I compressed the file size to upload quickly. so this DVD is worth owning.

I already sent copies to ron @vhboots and some other traders.
go look for it to VHtrading or JTT.

I always liked Jump. I liked it that Ed made synths sound more human than anyone else up to that point without it mimicking the sound of another instrument. there's loads of stuff on the early albums where the flangers are producing a similar 'airy' sound via the guitar.

When it first came out it sounded fresh - that synth sounded organic. It pushes air. And to me, it shows the influence of The Who on Ed. It's got that sense of space you hear on some of that early 70s Who stuff, and those chords or the chord pattern is very Townshend-like.

But I understand why people hate it as well. It overshadows everything else (especially to non-fans of the band), and it is nowhere near being in their top 20 tunes. I don't especially need to hear it again.

But if I listen to the 1984 album, especially on vinyl as it was intended, I'd rather not skip. I think within that context - playing the whole album through - it's the best way to listen to hear it.

It also wouldn't hurt one little bit if the band dropped it from the live set (along with Pretty Woman, You Really Got Me and other 'hits' ....)

Well put Scraps, but I actually thought at the time, that Ed had copped a sound similar to Rush's Subdivisions from a year or two earlier.

Sadly, those 3 songs you mentioned are most likely bolted to the stage floor for the bands duration.

That's interesting - that's right around the time I stopped buying / listening to Rush. I probably bought that album but never got into it, so it sort of passed me by that the sound Ed had might have been copped from that.

Moving Pictures was the last album of theirs that I was really into - and from memory (I haven't listened to it for 30 years!) I probably like it better than the other stuff of theirs I used to listen to - i.e., everything they released up to that point.

Not really "copped" but similar airiness as you described. I can't imagine Ed intentionally biting from Rush, especially after the great "Ed spills beer on Geddy's tape player" story from Creem back in the day. You know the one.

I do not know that story.

Was it a hoax / joke? I can imagine Ed spilling beer no problem, but I can't imagine him being in the same place as Rush - backstage at a Rush show?

I think I do remember that sound now - was it a song called 'Signals'?

Ah, okay - just went to youtube ... Signals was the album. Doh!

And yes, I did own it back then, but can't remember any of the tunes apart from Subdivisions.

Yeah, I see what you mean.

I have two issues, one from '80 and one from '81. One of them tells the alledgedly true tale of both the VH and Rush gang being at the same hotel bar, perhaps as their tour schedules were close. Story goes that Geddy played some soon to be released Rush on a small cassette recorder and whilst it was playing, Ed poured his beer over the tape player. Sounds hard to believe, and being it was Creem, possibly exaggerated or BS.

    And yes, Signals.
