Dave, i love you but ...(higher register voice)

Dave, i love you and your great voice, i have studied your voice
and techniques for years, i'm sure that singing on the original register
might be boring for you, i'm sure it's much easier and not challenging maybe.
But please stop butchering the tunes, just watched several songs of the Sydney Show.
Still doing Dance the night away on the higher register!
If Dave read this ..please bring the original register back !!!!
The higher register is not fun anymore

Yeah. I don't get it. Than the next song he sounds fine. But his voice is not that great anymore. The guy screamed it away for 30 years.

He can still sound real good if he sticks to his register, why insist on singing high, same thing he did on hot for teacher ! why !
i would love to talk with him about this , it's not better ! btw its way more easier on the lower tone !
He wants to sound like Perry Farrell or something like that

He can't do the screams anymore, which is understandable after a great many years. He's closing in on 60 and to expect the screams of old is no different than expecting the split jump off of the drum riser. The high register thing to me, is all mental over compensation. My uneducated guess is that he's pushing his vocal muscle harder out of mild frustration over his present day physical short comings. "58 is the new 80"? That bit of self deprecation is a tell. He's mentally young enough to do so much more, but father time is stepping on his tail, going "uh uh uh. Not so fast."

Hopefully, he settles into his comfort zone. There are so many damn classis songs that can be nailed with his traditional baritone. He just needs to drop the anchor and stay there. No one here, after 30 plus years, is expecting Dave to be something he never was. He'll get it.

I kind of commented about this same thing in the sticky. Even just a couple of verses sung the way they were originally recorded would do it for me...

Perhaps he is trying to prove he can sing.....a delayed reaction to critics who always said (and some still do) that he talks his way through a lot of songs....

He just needs to find a happy medium.....but then, he is gonna do what he is gonna do. And it it still Uncle Dave.

I don't care of his skill as a singer at all.
he's not Hagar. he even is not a hard rock singer to begin with.
    he's an incomparable entertainer.

Thanks. I may actually be wrong, but who the hell knows but Dave, right? I'm just trying to make sense of, or rationalize why he's going so damn high on Dance The Night Away. Imagine if they pulled Feel Your Love Tonight or So This Is Love out of their hat and he delivered it the same way. I'd say "Houston, we have a problem" followed by "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Agreed. He sounded great on that 07-08 tour. At least from the videos I checked out. I love Dave, always will and he is the only guy to front this band but I wish he would ditch some of that high register stuff too. Especially on this tune.

The long overdue "DAVE IS A BARITONE" thread. I could not agree more. I've seen every Roth solo tour since 96 live and in person, and I won't pay this time around to hear him sing like this.
I know he likes to romanticize the blue singer "reaching for that note". However, if you're baritone voice (or technically low baritone speaking voice, high baritone singing voice for Dave), you reach into your grab bag of tenor or high tenor vocals for...a note, maybe a verse, but not the entire song. This is what wore his voice out last tour, staining like this instead of keeping it in the pocket.
I have no clue what the guy is thinking singing like this.

Dave sang better during the 2007/08 tour, for sure.

I make a few faces here and there while listening to the 2012 versions too. What's odd as well to me is when he starts a verse
as high as he can, and then ends it 2 tones lower, which breaks the coherence of the melodies.
Or sometimes he'll start a line pretty high and finish it at the right height, or 2 tones lower again...

But it depends on the songs, because on "Romeo Delight" for instance his singing mathced perfectly.
Maybe it's only a matter of rehearsing as well, as it was said earlier - but during last year's tour it was the same.

It would be interesting to have Ed's and Al's takes about it, and even Wolf's.
The backing vocals are spot on, but sometimes when Dave joins in it almost makes the whole get out of tune.

i know but he did it on a magical way back then , changing the melodies and even lyrics but that sounded good if not perfect !
Now he is ruining the tunes

Check Hear about it later: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=249JDx86W5c

    "Pay my billlllllllllls "
"Carry little wine for suuuuuuuuuuure" that's not his harmony

" i wanna run for my money that's all" not good at all

I do believe he is trying to prove or show something

Most of the song is done on the higher register ...wtf !!!!!!

The only thing he's showing singing like that is that he sucks...

    Especially to the casual listener...

I wouldn't share this Van Halen with anyone...

Have to agree with DTNA. It was a concert highlight back in 07-08. Now it's more like WTF? Not sure what Dave is going for with that tune, but he's swinging and missing by a mile. Surprised Ed and Wolf haven't had a DTNA intervention with him...

He doesn't need vocal lessons, maybe vocal lessons are the cause he is doing this.
Because he is " unleashing the new register " , his original and natural singing style is what we love and like.
Something happened in 1993-94 that made him change his style, he got nasal, forgot the cool raspy voice for a while
and started to sing real high on Your Filthy little mouth and he has been doing it since then , when he got
the ability to sing higher he started to yell like crazy on Panama and other classics, he needs a non yes-man
guy that knows exactly how he used to sing and re-teach them the classic way and i'm sure he can get the classic whistle scream back too.

I know he likes to sing what he wants but back then he used to make up parts that had nothing to do with the song
but they sound real cool and on key !

So this is love : at 3:58 and 4:10

First off, I get what your saying, we're on the same page, those clips are still spectacular, but the way he utilizes his vocal approach to the classics now just not do them justice.

Second, if David Lee Roth can study the martial arts and sword swinging and training, be serious and passionate about it, he should seek out some formal vocal lessons.

This would not only ease up stamina, but would teach him better breath control, tonal quality and singing from the diaphragm, instead of str8 from the throat would ease up torn and swollen vocal chords. Lots of lemons and A/C rants ? c'mon Dave, give us a break ...

If he keeps this yelping, shouting and straining singing hi tenor on "Dance The Night Away" and others, instead of trying to sing in the Steve Perry range, it'll be a short road, trust me.

Dave, you got the talent man, go back to your more raspy 1980,"Take Your Whiskey Home", heck, even his more natural 1986, "Eat 'em and Smile" approach and you will see the difference in magic, if not, torn, worn out, swollen vocal chords will be the long lasting result that lots of singers never recover from.

Could be Dave is more similar to us common folks... we spend more time, money and energy on our hobbies rather than what earns us dinner.

It appeared Dave did some vocal training or something that transformed his singing quality significantly back when he did the Blue Grass project Strummin with the Devil. That bump in singing quality was clearly present during the 07/08 tour.

Maybe Dave needs to go country again... or maybe we need to get his real sisters on on his ass in the singing department. Seems anything he's done with them he's more committed than with the Van Halen sisters...

I wonder if there are someone close to him that might have a clue or maybe he is surrounded with " wow dave the new dance the night away approach is fantastic " yesman kind of people , he needs someone who really knows his voice and how to get the best out of it.

Dave comes across as the guy who does it his way .
I don't imagine he listens to many people , think he just does and goes where his muse takes him .
