I totally agree with the Chef.

If Ed (or Wolf) would ever truly "Rape The Vaults", and give us one of the old shows on bluray, I wouldn't give a fuck if VH ever performed live again.

Sure, if they continue to tour, I'll still go. But at this point, I am much more interested in having a quality copy of one of the old shows.

Of course, knowing the way this band operates, they'd fuck that up too. Instead of just throwing it onto a DVD and releasing it, I'm sure they'd go in and take out all the live nuances that we loved and expected from the original version of this band.

You would think after all these years. All these mistakes. These fucking guys would have enough common sense to listen to us. THE FANS! The closest they have come to listening to a fan, is listening to Wolf. Maybe they should listen to someone else that has the best interest of the music in mind. I can promise one thing, if they listened to me, they'd get the best interest of the music, AND still make a ton of money in the process.

AS regards marketing / promotion, ADKOT sponsored a couple of episodes of the Adam Carolla Podcast (start throwing rotten fruit "NOW") which I first misinterpreted as him just "talking up the album" but then it was obvious it was ad placement so "somebody" was looking to reach VH fans (or potential fans) through a "new" medium, podcasting. If you stop throwing the rotten fruit at me, I will return to the shadows and be quiet for a while.

If I cared enough, I could find an equal number of praising quotes on YouTube, which would mean about as much as the negative ones, i.e., nothing. I don't disagree with you re: Dave's voice... I think he completely and unnecessarily goes to the high registers, it's cringe-inducing, and I just wish someone would pull him to the side and show him....

All I'm referring to is exposing themselves just a bit more via social media, and the majority of it is dirt cheap, if not free....

Those several sessions where Dave, Ed and Al were just reminiscing were fantastic !! Now I don't think Ed and Al would want to keep continuing that, but personally I'd like to see DLR shift his "Roth Show" episodes more towards his old VH days myself.....

How about a [ moderated ] Q & A with the fans uploaded via UStream or something equivalent ?? Shit, even an hour with Wolf I think would be interesting, assuming some good questions were asked....

How about sending out PERSONALIZED Tweets from DLR and EVH, and not linking to yet another DLR pic from Tokyo, or announcing the latest EVH flip-flops.... IMO even the smallest of personalized Tweets are appreciated way more than these pretty lame ones now....

That's ONE song from ONE show and it also happens to be a song that pretty much everybody agrees that Dave has been consistently poor on since the '12 tour. I'm sure if we had access to enough boots, we could find plenty examples of Dave "sucking" for one reason or another on some song he performed between '78 and '84, which just was what it was at the time.

Well, I must say I agree with Elvis in terms of Dave's current live vocal choices: overall, they just don't sound nearly as good as they could if he just sang the tunes the way they were originally recorded. Even granting concessions to age (those high-end shrieks are gone forever), Dave could be sounding much better than he is. He sounded tight, focused and concise in 2007/2008. Dunno why he has made the choice to yell out lyrics in a strained mid-range key he's clearly not comfortable with.

Beyond that, Van Halen probably never will return to their glory days, even if Anthony rejoins. The band waited too long to get their collective act together (well, 3/4ths of a collective, anyway) and time has eroded their abilities somewhat.

I'd be much more interested in the prospect of the vaults released for purchase than the future of the band, if it was to be some hypothetical "either/or" proposition. As chef pointed out, Eddie has merchandised the fuck out of the EVH stripes and Van Halen logo, but for whatever reasons the Van Halens can't be bothered giving the fans the classic material/artifacts that they want. Whatever one can say about KISS being greedy in terms of merchandising, at least the band has put out all that classic live footage.

Plus, looking at Van Halen's future in realistic terms, Van Halen as a live prospect are no longer the reliable, sure-thing they once were. Ed was fucked up when I saw them in 2008, and Dave wasn't singing well when I saw them in 2012. Maybe they can continue recording, although considering they had to rework a half-dozen old demos to make a full-length album I'm not sure what that portends in terms of creative viability.

It's odd, but in 1996 all I wanted from the band was for them to reunite, move forward and record some great new music and play it alongside the great CVH classics. It took 'em a decade and they lost a member along the way, but they pretty much managed to pull off a reunion (no mean feat in itself considering a lot of the self-imposed odds - ego, abuse - they had going against them). Now, when it comes to the band I'm more interested in the past than what they're doing today or what the future might bring. They've got nothing left to prove.
