Man, I am sorry I missed this post. Bob Mould played a set for Austin City Limits this season, and it was mind-fuckingly good. The trebly, over-distorted, headache inviting sound was kept to a minimum, and he played a set comprised equally of Husker, Sugar and recent album solo tunes. Outstanding.

He was great , plus the venue was a small 500 capacity job so it was like seeing him in a sweaty pub rather than seeing acts in the usual local enormodome.
Glad you enjoyed it chef , he still has that no thrills great tunes thing nailed .

I saw Husker in 1985 at a dreary little community center called Firemen's Hall in Fort Lauderdale. My skull has yet to return to it's original shape and form. Just for shits and giggles, Mould swapped instruments with bassist Greg Norton, who had no idea how to play Mould's guitar (complete with it's over the top volume), and quite famously acquitted himself in what is safe to say as a fairly hapless yet ear-splitting manner.

God, I loved those guys. And seeing them perform on Joan Rivers' late night show promoting the Warehouse album only added to the surreality of living through the 1980s. Of course, cocaine and Jack Daniels' fine whiskey-like product helped things a bit. Shit, if you made it through that era without the aid of pharmaceutical assistance, my hat is off to ya. Not by much, though, as I believe (yet have little memory to support this) that I might have had a jolly, good old time.

Bob sounds like he has come to terms with growing older and maybe being a little wiser. I'm still out on what to make of 'Silver Age.' You can make a valid argument that it is certainly the most melodic album he's ever done and he seemed to pull up a bright (as in intelligent) rhythm section especially Jason Narducy's punchy bass lines that enhance Mould's bombastic chord riffing. I know he has been playing 'Copper Blue' in its entirety live for the past year and I'm not sure as to why. Maybe as a thank you to his fans? I missed out on seeing him when he passed through but people who did said Mould never sounded and/or played better.

You didn't see him , was that a deliberate choice or just busy And would catch him he passed through again ?
And am pretty sure it's 20 years since copper blue was released ... Fuck that sounds weird . So I think it's one of these commemorate its anniversary deals.

Believe it was an affordability issue. 'Copper Blue' may well be Mould's best work and Sugar was the ideal power trio he always wanted to be in after the Husker fallout. I do love 'Silver Age' even if it sounds Bob may be slowing down a bit but again, the rhythm section he aligned himself within that record is quite impressive and more focused than Barbie and Travis ever were. Tim Wright from Pere Ubu fame seemed at least to me, the perfect bass player for Mould but the man had other commitments. Be interesting to see what could have happened if the two did record more together.

I'll be sure to catch him the next time around. I've seen him at least 4 times already.

Playing a classic album in its entirety seems to be a way of plugging a tour now. It's a promotion thing as much as anything else.
