    Great unknown riffs/grooves

Are you familiar with a tasty riff or groove that you are pretty much convinced virtually no one else knows but you? Then this thread is for you!!

    I'll go first.

I can't find anyone who even remotely remembers the band from the way early days of grunge called Love On Ice. To me, they kinda sound like what you might get if you dropped Ugly Kid Joe and Jane's Addiction in a blender. This tune was their single. The riff and the over all groove has stuck with me for 21 years now (sickening). Their only CD, Nude is phenomenal and they have a great song on the Bill And Ted's Bogus Journey soundtrack called Showdown.

Y'know, thankfully, I'm unfamiliar with this particular "riff". I steered my kids away from this show the best I could.

Wow! After years and years I finally got a clean copy of this tune!

An April Wine single from 1972 called "Teacher". It was the B side of their hit single "You Coulda Been A Lady" from the album "On Record". THIS song, however, was never included on the album or released on any other record.

I have this single, but by 1980 it was all scratched and when I finally recorded it to cassette in the 1990s, it was scratched badly....skipping, clicking, popping, etc....

Listen to the section that begins about 2:03...

THIS IS ONE OF THE GREAT UNKNOWN GUITAR SOLOS OF ALL TIME!

Listen to that TONE.....in the initial few bars there is this great pick sound......the acoustic rhythm begins and the fucking guitar BURNS. Then it is sort of evens out before going back to the chorus one time...

The solo transcends the song......then there is a short outro solo.

I was given this by my cousin from Denver in 1972 and I played the shit out of it.

I saw those guys live with Lover Boy as the opening act. I think it was my second concert I ever saw. Yeah that solo sounds great. I remember April Wine being a solid band live.

That's awesome Hardrock! The solo is kind of like Frampton's solo to the Lodger, but on cocaine... so much cocaine!!

Here is the relevant stuff from their Wikipedia page. Note that their early hits were cover songs:

Under the guidance of producer Ralph Murphy, April Wine recorded their second album, titled On Record. The first single from the album was a cover version of the song "You Could Have Been a Lady", originally by the band Hot Chocolate. The record was a commercial success, hitting number 5 on the Canadian charts, as well as cracking the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States where it stayed for eleven weeks, peaking at No. 32.[10] Following quick on its heels, April Wine released a second single from On Record, titled "Bad Side of the Moon". This song, written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, also found success on Canadian radio stations and was a minor hit in the U.S. as well. Both tracks remain staples on classic rock radio stations in Canada to this day. On Record was certified Gold in Canada and the band, along with Murphy, hit the studio to cash in on the promotional momentum generated by their second release.
I don't know who played the solo, but the likely candidate was David Henman, who is listed as the original guitarist. Miles Goodwyn was the vocalist from the start, and is credited with playing guitar as well, but it if David was the lead guitarist, he deserves credit for the solo.

I saw April Wine on several occasions when they were in their heydey in the early 80s. In fact, there is an audio bootleg floating around of their show I attended in Wichita, KS.

    Hmmmm....let's see.....

Holy crap....there is a pro-shot video from that show! I am seeing numerous references to it on the net....

On youtube there is the entire set from their Cedar Rapids, Iowa show only 11 days after they played Wichita.

Saw April Wine numerous times from 76 on. Great Canadian band. They played my exes high school in Montreal. He knew their drummer Jerry Mercer quite well.

Everytime one of these "unknown" threads comes up, I always have to mention the 77s.

Sadly, after all these years, they remain (mostly) unknown

    Cool

Legendary rock producer Martin Birch , who worked with Jeff Beck, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and others, also produced this in 1978.

    Cool

First band I ever saw live was TROOPER, when they opened up for BTO in 1976. I was only 7 years old, but my pop wanted to see the concert for himself and took me with him. Randy Bachman produced their best albums in the mid to late '70's.

Love Of My Life, has some blistering arena rock guitar solo's towards the end.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYQeANnP844

Baby Woncha Please Come Home, their first big radio hit, has a cool heavy bluesy groove and raunchy harmonica.

Yeah, you must be from Canada, I'm surprised anyone knew about them. They had some great tunes back then. " We're Here For a Good Time " should be Canada's theme song. LOL.

I'd say Jim Croce's Time In A Bottle was closer in similarity than Stairway was. No harm no foul from either, though. You can't keep the world from playing a descending chord progression on an acoustic guitar ever again just because Spirit did that tune.

That and "Raise a Little Hell" are pretty much our rock anthems.

Another fantastic and absolutely BURNING "ROCK" guitar solo. And there is no doubt who plays guitar in this band, Jan Akkerman:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hocus_P...nstrumental%29

"Hocus Pocus" is a 1971 instrumental from Focus II (aka Moving Waves), the second album by Dutch rock group Focus. It was written by guitarist Jan Akkerman and flautist/keyboardist Thijs van Leer. It was also released as a single with "Janis" as a B-side for the UK and "Hocus Pocus II" for the United States.

It takes the form of a rondo, consisting of alternation between a powerful rock chord riff and varied solo "verses" (in the original all performed by Thijs van Leer) which include yodeling, organ playing, accordion, scat singing, flute riffs, and whistling. Focus recorded a special, faster radio version, which became a hit. When performing live, the group would play the tune even faster.

"Hocus Pocus" reached #20 in the UK, #18 in Canada, and #9 in the US during the spring of 1973, and re-entered the UK charts at #57 on 6 June 2010 after being featured heavily on The Chris Moyles Show and in a Nike TV advert shown during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
