    Boss TU-2 chromatic tuner....

This is in praise of my fav pedal of all time .
Every one here must have had one of these bad boys . Well anyone who has played in a shitty boozer carried all their stuff in and out and been ignored all night.
    Bedroom guitarist need not apply.
This is the tuner for people who end up with their gear thrown in the back of a shitty van to get to the next gig.
I have had mine swilled with beer, squashed , trashed , stolen and returned i have had someone throw it at someone ( honestly).
This fucker will be sitting pretty with the cockroaches at the end of the world.

    TU2.jpg

Trying to up load a pic of bob mould's pedal board from last month .It had the above bad boy , but it wont upload from my phone .
    Will keep trying gggrrr

A $7 pitch pipe and time to learn how to tune by ear. All you need.

Fuck off , so the point of the pedal is you can have it running and tune up with out it coming through the amp . So quick tune up adjustments between songs even during ...
Try pipes at a festival gig or tuning by ear in front of being jammed next to a bass cab.
It's not for bedrooms it's for gigs :-)

Typical self-professed musician with their BOSS pedals:

Crap guitar player: "Hang on! Hang On! I've got to plug all this shit in! Anybody know where any outlets are? I'm a a musician! I have no job. I can't afford to keep putitng batteirs in these god damn things!"

The rest of the band: "Oh, for fuck's sake!"

Crap guitar player: "Think I left my extension cord in my girlfriends car and it's parked six blocks away. Hold on while I go get it."

The rest of the band: *farts*

*Crap guitar player comes back 15 minutes later*

Crap guitar player "Sorry dudes, stopped for a cigarette. So where are the outlets?

*a half hour passes the crap guitar player plugs of this shitty, over priced pedals in looking like a pretentious asshole in doing so*

Crap guitar player "Yeah, hang on, I gotta tweak everything...my fucking delay is off."

*the rest of the band packs up and leaves while the crap guitar player continues to self-masturbate with his pedals, tweaking this, tuning that*

    Two words: pedalboard required.
Why settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?

Good point. Most musicans who use effects pedals usually don't invest in BOSS. The majority of their pedals are overpriced and noisy.

I only have one boss it's the tuner , to be honest am not a massive fan of pedals as such.
I swap between my Marshalls but mostly use my line 6 spider 3 , it's got a lot of tasty settings .

Tuning, really? I usually yell across the room or stage at the bass player, and say "Hey, gimme an A." Since we are essentially as blasted as the audience, who gives a shit, particularly when your repertoire consists of a bunch of Neil Young and Beat Farmers tunes.

And the only effects pedal I have ever used consistently was an old Cry Baby wah, with a broken drumstick crammed into it wrapped with duct tape, then blasted through my somewhat questionable and highly dubious 1976 era 400 watt Peavey. Nothing beat it for getting that raw, Randy Rhoads sound from the first couple of Ozzy solo albums.

Seriously, play "Down By The River" for 25 minutes or so through this rig, it wails. Of course, you will endure a considerable amount of hearing loss and interminable tinnitus in your later years, but hey, what the fuck. It's worth the loss.

See? Chef has the right idea. This is why bands have bass and/or keyboard players. I've always been impressed when I see a (true) musician on stage tuning by ear especially when they use a 'Nashville Tuning' or the like.

Yes, nothing more fun than watching the guitar player ask the bass player for an A....

It's not a question of being able to tune by ear, most of us can. At rehearsal, writing, etc. [but NEVER in the studio]

It's not practical in a large setting, at a crowded noisy gig, and it looks amateurish.

looking down at a stomp box, pedal board, or better yet back at my RACK MOUNTED tuner, and being able to be dead-on with no one having to hear it is best.

Also helps us bass players when we need to drop the E down a step on certain songs, because we loathe 5 string basses.

You really don't care, Kristy....you're just trolling

To each their own , I sound bad enough without being out of to tune to compound it .
Plus am heavy handed as fuck and could knock any guitar to shit, so the pedal is handy .

What did Kristy use to tune during her last live gig?

Yeah, cuz that works so well in a band context, in a noisy bar while you're on the clock. Club owners LOVE the "gimme an 'A'" thing. Get real, FFS.

    Had mine for years too.

A tuner is the first pedal you should buy if you play live, it's notable that the people that have played lots of gigs are the ones saying that.

When a room fills up it warms up and inevitably the guitars go a little out of tune. Try a fucking tuning pipe while the band before you is blasting their stuff out.

Or go on stage after them and start asking for an A FFS? Many if not most places have house music playing while you are setting up, maybe even people up dancing.

Rather than the BOSS thing this time around I went for a Korg Pitch Black though which is easier to see in a gig situation, similar to a rack mounted one but fits in your pedal board.

Also an aside is that if you want to change guitar you can use your tuner as a kill switch to stop the horrible noise as you fuck around with your jack cable.

And anyway this is 2013, do people really use pipes?

If I don't have a tuner handy I use an app on my phone or online.

Back in the day it used to be the bass intro to Yankee Rose for concert tuning, Running with the Devil for a step down...

I've never used a tone pipe in my life.

I can't even think of a time I've seen someone else use one...

I recommend the Korg thing BTW, it's solid.

Some tuners sometimes do a weird flutter around thing, it's worth paying a bit extra for something decent.

I felt flush and got that guitar toolkit for my iPhone . Tuners decent and it's got some other scales chords etc to play with .
And because its on your phone it's kind of always handy .

I've got a TU-2 on my pedal board and a Peterson Strobo-Clip that is just frickin' awesome (they make a pedal version that's a tank as well). Totally easy to spot-check between takes recording w/o having to unplug or open another app.

Pretty sure the main difference of the TU-3 is that's it's got a display you can read under any lighting condition - ever tried to use a TU-2 at a daytime outdoor gig? Not fun; had to quickie-rig a paper and duct tape "shade" for it to be visible...it's that pedal's only drawback IMO. Otherwise fucking bulletproof, just realized mine's going on 10 years old.

The pitch-pipe bullshit got me thinking about a tech gig I did for a Hollywoo' nu-metal band at the Viper Room a few years back - for those unfamiliar, the place while near legendary, is so small there's an exit door next to the stage that remains in use during shows. Not good. So anyway, this band had two guitarists using 3 tunings. Each guitar had a backup. The bass player only had the 3, no backups. So 15 instruments total. That alone would be enough to keep you busy if they were all tuned to standard...but you have a letter/number system coded with the set list, identifying which guitars & bass in what tuning is needed next. Compound this with the fact that you have nowhere to set up your workspace save that side of the stage - by the door. Only it's December, and while it's 100 degrees because of all the people packed in there, it's 40 degrees outside. The door's opening every couple of seconds, and every time it does the rush of cold air causes ALL the necks to flex. I was tuning CONSTANTLY that night. Working around the bouncers and a steady stream of peeps coming and going from smoke-breaks stepping on me as I'm trying to work, and hand these dudes their guitars (in tune). What should have been an easy couple hundred bucks for a 30-minute set turned into a mini-nightmare. But I'd pulled the TU-2 off my board because my ancient Boss TU-12H wouldn't cut it for alternate tunings....that pedal saved my (then semi-professional) life that night.

And I'm thinking... yeah, let's see someone get through that shit - with a pitch-pipe....puh-leez, Troll.
