1st read "The Hobbit" in middle school....late 70's

    I have read LOTR numerous times...played D & D back before I could drive....(funny how a car, guitars & girls ended that! 8) )

The Silmarillion is brilliant & staggering in its scope............

that one really adds to the understanding of all the cryptic allusions in LOTR & The Hobbit

    Ugh.

I used to stay with a friend of the family and they had the Tolkien books. I didn't like them.

Have only seen bits and pieces of the LOTR movies...I didn't like the books and won't bother with the movies.

Reading the books as an adult is different as a kid . For one the age
But they are better written and have more subtext than one appreciated as a nipper .

Many of us met Smaug when we were quite young. He went away for a very long time. And now we FINALLY get to see Smaug the Magnificent in all his glory.

hmmm....kinda similar to grown men getting teary eyed seeing a certain front man take his rightful spot on stage with a particular band.

sorry i am a fucking geek....and being a pilot.....in love with all the fantasy of flight.

Double BA in Business and English, Minor in Econ.

I visited Tolkien's Grave when I lived in Europe. Although he is put into Bantam books ect as fantasy.....escapism he is not. He was a great English Scholar and gets to the heart of where our language came from.

A story of Beowulf is not always appreciated until you see how it shaped the very words you use. Lacante' would tell you the same thing after you escaped your mirror phase.

And now for something completely different, but I think Tolkien would have a heads up about:

Ouch. The industrializaion that puts us all in a box fighting nature...... and Google's Motto:

Thanks a bunch Katina for helping out with the pics. NEXT WEEK! I can't wait! He looks so fucking perfect. I have been preparing myself for disappointment this entire time. Like we all were with the Godzilla movie several years back. But damn you Peter Jackson....you fucking nailed it again!!! So stoked about this.

Anyone see the midnight showing? Or is going tonight? I just couldn't see me staying up until 3 am on a work night. I didn't want to be miserably tired all day. I am going Sunday morning showing.

Also about Peter Jacksons design of Smaug. I was thinking how cool it was that he made him look like a regular dragon. When anyone thinks of a dragon, this is the typical image that comes to mind. So many of the top directors feel the need to create their version/concept of what a dragon should be. To leave their mark on the world. Like they are so gifted & important that their creation of something will be the new standard bearer. And Jackson said fuck that, make it look like a damn regular dragon.

From all the reviews, even the bad ones, everyone agrees that Smaug is the best creature ever to grace a screen. Not an easy feat.

2 hours 40 minutes of a video game full of "Greetings Smeegle Wibble, are you going to the fortress city of Erumblebottom where the Spickle Dweebs fashion great jewels from the rocks of Twatenstone Mountain which they sell to the Finklewargs who are known for their great leader Bungle Puss the disinterested...?"

I may skip this one and let her take the kids...

I watched the LOTR. The third one put me off. I'm all for gay rights and so on but 3 hours of strident homo eroticism, will they won't they followed by 45 minutes of endings put me off a bit and I ended up skipping the first Hobbit movie.

The one that took a billion zillion dollars at the box office - I do realise I am in the minority here...

The longest movie I've seen at the cinema in the last few years was Skyfall and it was long at 2 hours 23. There is only so much vodka you can drink before you need to go for a piss and I had to at that one at the 2 hour mark.

The worst was Gravity where we had 3 quick pints of beer, rushed into the iMax in the middle of a 40 person row with no central walkways. I needed a piss from 10 minutes in, thank fuck it was a fairly short movie.

I know this sounds like old man talk but to be fair real old man talk is when you have that problem without the pints of booze...

Very very few movies need to be over 2 hours, there is no need for it. In the LOTR I found Fat Sam fucking annoying whining on and it needed to be severely edited. Leave it to the DVD extras for the uber fans.

I swear to god and all holy pasta lords, that's why I don't wanna have to sit and not be able to pause the movie, and take of biz in between.

That said I think if you watched Gravity on your TV you would be completely puzzled by why it got so much hype, it's more a Universal Studios ride than a bit of narrative cinema.

don't think I've watched any of the "extras", that can be annoying (other than bloopers ). are intermissions so wrong?

truth be told, an intermission at a theater that doesn't sell booze would be half as important

If you have a 9 hour story do it on HBO, movies should be concise.

I ate up every aspect of Breaking Bad including extras but I wouldn't have sat in the cinema to watch 50 hours of it.

Particularly kids films - I can't be the only person that looks at the running time of a kids movie before deciding if I take them to see it at the cinema...

    No preliminary review from vandeleur?

To explain to people in the US he is from a place in the North of England called Newcastle which means at the moment he will be in the middle of a city street wearing a t-shirt in the freezing cold, with a brown beer in one hand and someones hair in the other while girls in white high heels and little else shout abuse and encouragement.

Not so much the minority - I was exactly the same way, 100%. I was there opening night for all the LOTR movies. Still haven't seen the Hobbit though. ROTK just rubbed me the wrong way. Undecided if I'll see Desolation of Smaug or not. I'm fine re-reading the books at this point.

hmmm, you think it would cost more to do a five or six season tv show, or the movie route he took?

p.s. no clue on the kid thing, other than the common sense answer
