Bonham+Heart @ Jones Beach Theater review

    I give the show 8/10

For the past year or so, Heart has been on tour with Bonham for the "Heartbreaker" tour and when they announced that they would be playing in Wantagh, NY, me and my family decided to go because I love both Led Zeppelin and Heart!!

Bonham was the opening act, only that the band isn't called "Bonham" anymore, but the "Led Zeppelin Experience" I remember being very, very, very, very, very impressed with the way that the lead singer (who looks like a cross between Pitbull and Bob Kulick, btw.) but in the same vein I was pretty disappointed that they didn't attempt some material from The Disregard of Timekeeping and Mad Hatter. I fucking LOVE both of those records. Jason Bonham is an incredible drummer. People compare him to his father all the time, but Jason's drumming to me is very (God rest his soul) Eric Carr-like. Bonham's set was VERY short, only eight songs and they fucked off.

    This was Bonham's setlist.

    1. Rock n' Roll
    2. Black Dog
    3. Over The Hills And Far Away
    4. Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You
    5. Houses Of The Holy
    6. Nobody's Fault But Mine
    7. When The Levee Breaks
    8. Whole Lotta Love

Next up was Heart. Ann Wilson's voice has not changed AT ALL. Even at 62 years old she still belts out those high notes she was made famous for. Nancy Wilson is an absolute GILF. She aged like fine wine. She's the only 58 year old woman I would willingly bang. Great guitarist and singer too. However for some odd reason, some of their songs were slowed down to an absolute CRAWL. The first song in the set was Barracuda and that was just slowed down to a fucking snail's pace. Despite that, Ann sounded great. What About Love was also slowed down horribly. And something that dissapointed me a lot was the fact that they didn't do If Looks Could Kill which is one of their greatest songs but looking back, that would have probably been slowed down to the point that it was barely recognizable. These Dreams was the point that everyone got their cell phones out to use them as lighters (Jones Beach banned lighters and smoking tobacco a long time ago. However people ALWAYS smuggle in weed.) Nancy's voice sounded absolutley beautiful for that song. They also did Alone, but it was that semi-acapella shit with absolutley no punch at all. The best part about the studio version of Alone was the slow and sad beginning with a sudden punch in the face for the chorus. But overall, the show was decent and I would pay to see them again.

    This was Heart's setlist.

    1.Barracuda
    2.Heartless
    3.What About Love
    4.Magic Man
    5.Kick It Out
    6.Mistral Wind
    7.Even It Up
8.I Need You to Turn To
    9.Walkin' Good
    10.These Dreams
    11.Alone
    12.Dear Old America
    13.Crazy On You

After Heart's setlist was the remainder of the Led Zeppelin tribute. For this, Jason Bonham came out to replace Heart's drummer and Bonham's guitarist also came out. Heart's bassist, lead guitarist, keyboardist and The Sisters were a part of the Bonham/Heart fusion. They sounded very good together and Ann Wilson makes a great Robert Plant!

This was the setlist for the Heart/Bonham finale.

    1.Battle of Evermore
    2.The Song Remains the Same
    3.The Rain Song
    4.The Ocean
    5.Kashmir
    6.Stairway to Heaven

I don't understand why so many old bands are slowing down their songs? I've seen a lot do that...

The opposite approach can be just annoying..... speeding up the "classics" like The Ramones did on their later tours.....

Man I wanted to see this Bonham/Heart show but I had to travel that day. The tickets were pretty cheap I think.

I would totally bang Nancy Wilson.

Regarding slow and fast tempos, both times I got to see STP they played many of their songs slower and it was much more badass for it. I remember Wicked Garden was just brutal when they slowed it a bit. Usually when a band speeds up an old song live it sounds like shit.

Except in KISS' case. When they sped up their 70s hits for the Animalize, Asylum and Crazy Nights tours, they sounded awesome. A superchargedd Love Gun as the opener during the Crazy Nights tour was like an absolute punch in the face.

Yeah that sounds like fun. Tempo changes can be fun. The Black Crowes played Sting Me VERY slowly on their Europe '97 tour and it was a revelation.

The slower You're Crazy on the GnR live album fuckin' owns.

I'm having trouble coming up with fast examples but you had a good one.

I'd throw Nancy Wilson a bang as well, but she's starting to look like all the face-lifts and botox are beginning to work against her.
