That's a bold statement. Definitely a handful of tasty riffage on there, but a fair share of clunkers, too. Not sure what the 5 weeks difference would have made, but the guy wasn't about to break any musical ground with Oni Logan dishing out huff and puff lyrics about his burning soul.

Yeah, the technical proficiency was there, but the songs were completely uninteresting to me, with the exception of the song Jordan. So yeah, there are guys "better" than Ed from a technical standpoint, but when you factor in the ability to actually write good tunes, Ed comes out on top.
Very true. That's also why Ed's own ship was sinking by the time OU812 came out. By '89, his imitators were blowing past him because their mediocre melodies were better than, say, Sucker In A 3 Piece. F.U.C.K. had some nice guitar moments, but Ed is pretty much the riff equivalent of a super nova. He created the majority of his finer moments before Ted stumbled through the door.

Yep, Ed had a good run of several years then...nothing. Well, not exactly nothing. He did bestow upongst us the insanely good How Many Say I. Oh yeah, and that track he did for that porno. Which is kinda fitting since it was basically Ed jerkin off for like seven minutes straight. Who knows, maybe he'll come up with something good for the next record. Unfortunately Sam will probably write stupid lyrics over it, stuff about boners and breakfast and crap like that.

Even if you don't like Dokken, Lynch has written some fantastic songs on the guitar. His rhythm and lead combination is stellar.

To compare flash in the pan speed and no substance guitarists like Macalpine, Malmsteen and even to an extent, Vai, to Ed or George Lynch, is asinine.

While Vai has written some decent songs on the guitar, he he has never really written much with a singer, that has stood the test of time. His best songs with Dave are mediocre at best rhythm wise. They had to have Tuggle, to fill all the dead space Vai left.

Satriani is the same way. I haven't heard all the Chickenfoot stuff, but what I have heard, was mediocre, at best. We know Chickenfoot as a whole is mediocre, but I'm talking about the songs as guitar songs. Nothing earth shattering at all, from what I heard.

None of those fuckers can write a hook like Lynch or Ed.

I think Ed still wrote some great riffage after Dave left. Not a lot, but some. I would love to have heard Dave's lyrics and vocals over riffs like Black and Blue, Best Of Both Worlds and Humans Being. Especially the latter. Ed sounds angry in that song. Some angry lyrics and vocals by Dave would have made that a killer tune.

Ed was angry cause he couldn't have no beers

I would have liked to hear Dave's version of 5150. Take out Slappy's vocals and that's a killer song.

I'd add Cabo Wabo, 5150, Good Enough and Up For Breakfast to your list. I really like the music for UFB (other than them ripping themselves off with the intro part), but Sam really out did himself lyrically on that one to the point that the inane lyrics almost ruin the whole song for me.

Speaking of Clichegar's lyrics, have you heard the song he did with Ted on Nugent's last album? It ranks right up there as much as an abortion as anything he's ever done lyrically.

Haven't heard it, but I'm willing to jump in to the shallow end of self hatred, if only for a few minutes, to check it out. What's the name of the tune?

Well, I think the song you were referring to is "She's Gone", which in addition to the title is the only lyric to the song. Pretty unremarkable tune all the way around. And honestly, I think I'd rather listen to the samburglar repeat the same two words over and over than listen to him "honeydew his melon" or put cherries on his banana.

I often found myself wishing the same thing through those lean years. Runaround had s fun, early days simplicity to it that Dave would have knocked out of the park. Hell, there were some songs screaming out for Dave on the Cherone Halen thing. Ballot Or The Bullet opens with the closest Ed has ever come to Fair Warning era riffage. Dirty Water Dog was another decent groove.

Pretty much the riff from "Stompin' 8H," when EVH sat in with the SNL band when Val hosted the show.

Writing In All Proper Case Takes Extra Time, Is Confusing To Read, And Is Completely Pointless.

Lorne Michaels is a complete fascist when it comes to SNL clips on You Tube. Of course, he could always discourage the "bootlegging" by posting them himself, but it seems that SNL's "official" Youtube channel is only about promoting the current season, and not anything actually worth watching from the show's past.

I s'pose it's similar to that. I always dug the opening riff to this tune. Scraping a swimming pool vacuum brush on the ground for percussion was a cute trick.

Ed's playing on ADKOT and the last tour was back to his best ... possibly.
A lot of the past 20 years he was hammered to fuck, who knows he may knock out some killer riffs now he is seeing just the one guitar.
Just a pity its probably not gonna be with Dave putting down lyrics to them.

Like Vonzie mentioned one of the few Hagar era songs I like is humans being. Great tune and Dave would have kept it from the whole shine on lyric,
    fuck your fucking framing

The onset of grunge destroyed the prospects for many bands that seemingly had it all going for them. Lynch Mob, as well as bands like T-Ride (another "deserted island" disc), had the hooks and the looks, but were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Five years (not months) earlier would have put them smack dab in the middle of their element.

BUT, everyone wanted to whine in the rain saying "rape me" instead. sheesh

Not big fan of the shoe-gazer anthems like the one you mentioned, but Nirvana, AIC, Sound Garden and a hand full of others were a breath of fresh, albeit dirty flanneled, air IMHO. A lot of bands I liked did get lost in that jet stream, but only the strong survived. King's X adapted and minimally assimilated with their Dogman CD. Where was T-Ride's effort to survive? So many bands had the skills to pay the bills and still stay relatively true to themselves throughout the change in the rock world's landscape, but opted to either fold or play to a couple hundred people a night in clubs that were designed to keep them firmly planted in 1989. If some of those acts switched up a tad, they could've been cruising through the 90's on Lolapalooza tours and the like. Don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of Lynch, but for a guy of his caliber, to not to take a chance until 2014 (KXM) is just a shame.

Ha!! Nirvana was a breath of fresh air?? So is the fart that I just ripped! Nirvana sucked more cock than Freddie Mercury on New Year's Eve. Kurt Cobain was the single most untalented moron crybaby who ever got in front of a camera. Well, after the King of Hippies John Lennon. Nobrain's voice was shit, his lyrics were shit, and overall that band's music stunk worse than an early morning Cheap Beer dump. Kurt didn't die too soon - he died too late. Like 15 years too late. Fucking filthy Hippie idiot crybaby piece of shit!!

Now, what were we talking about?

I thank Nirvana every now and then for ridding the world of the likes of Warrant. The grunge period was a necessary evil. More of it turned out to be good than bad in my opinion. The way I see it, both new and old acts of today are more influenced by the 70s and 90s than the 80s. Accept for maybe Halestorm and a few others, but fuck that noise.

Absolutely, and better late than never, but to spend the better part of three decades sounding like Dokken minus Don Dokken is a head scratcher in my book. George is better than that.

They put on a killer show on the Uncle Tom tour. Plus they played fun music, got half lit on stage, and there were actual hot chicks at the show. As opposed to a Nirvana show where you had a filthie hippie crybaby hopping around on stage, hideously ugly flannel wearing chicks and dudes (kinda hard to tell the difference), and everybody gets off on being miserable. Gee, I wonder which ticket I should buy?

Cobain couldn't sing, was a pathetic performer, had zero talent and even less stage presence. Just like the Hippie King John Lennon. Jesus, quit your cryin, write a decent song, take a goddamn shower and quit ruinin my life!!

Never said I was a huge Nirvana fan. I appreciated the movement. Primarily AIC, who oddly enough, started out as the very sleeze rock they would help destroy. That period of the 90s shook shit up. Face it, the curve ball knocked Dave off his game. OBC took a stab at sounding grungy on a song or two in the mid-90's, but his poor singer of choice couldn't adapt either. It was a fascinating time in my memory. Sure, there was some shitty music in the mix, but a lot of great stuff, too.

The only talent in Nirvana was the drummer. The singer was a pathetic whining drug addict who absolutely reveled in being miserable. I do feel sorry for the guy for making the mistake of marrying one of the single most insane and unattractive women on the planet. Come to think of it, maybe all the drugs were a good idea lol.

I do actually like a couple songs from the era. But honestly when I hear a bunch of ugly hippies being angry I reach for the dial on the radio. I'd rather listen to some Rufus or Van Halen or Winger or Bread or The Captain and Tennille. Anything other than "ooh I'm so angry and nobody understands me and people are all fake and corporations suck" blah blah blah. I like being entertained - if I want to sit around and think about crappy stuff I'll go argue with Ford

Really Donnie, bashing a band that mattered while praising one that even knew themselves were a shitty joke of a band? I know you like crap music and gay pastel colors but come on man, you don't have to like bands to know what ones matter and will be remembered and what ones are lucky to play a local bar now. Warrant, give me a break.

Gay pastel colors look better than a filthy green sweater! You didn't see Sonny Crockett running around in some old dirty sweater he dug out of a dumpster!

But you have convinced me to give Nirvana another chance. So tomorrow I shall go out and buy one of their ground breaking, game changing, revolutionary, immortal CDs. Then I'm gonna set it on fire and piss on it

Wasn't there some movie that got made that laid out the "proof" that his ugly wife killed him?

And I know you're not a hippie, lol. I was just messing with you. Although I do think you may have Hippie Tendencies
