WHY SO HARSH? Just asking a hypothetical question for fun.
Who are these people?
No, I wouldn't want them to have a Roth copycat from a tribute band, it would be too corny. I know many of those tribute bands do sound good and many fans enjoy them, but for me, it's the real deal, or nothing at all.
If Dave did die, from a sword slinging mishap or something, I would be quite disapointed and miss him very much, like so many other great ones who've passed on.
So for the VH train to keep rolling, they would have to think outside of the box and choose someone good for a change, unlike those past two disasters. Don't know who exactly, since obviously DLR cannot ever be replaced, but VH could do something with multiple singers of a wide variety. Maybe Billy Idol could do a few tunes, get Micheal Monroe or Iggy Pop, maybe Glenn Hughes, I dont know, but it must be more than one singer.
I have Fuck all Interest in van halen without DLR .
Dave is van halen
fuck your fucking framing
Should've asked the question when Elvis was still here....
But to answer the question, hell no.....

"We are part of the, not just the culture, but the geography. Van Halen music goes along with like fries with the burger." - David Lee Roth
Mike should be back in before we worry about Dave doing himself in by slinging one of his shower curtain rods the wrong way. Unless he smacked himself in the larynx and it made his voice better, or whacked him on the head which causes him to no longer want to flit around the stage like some Glee wannabe who couldn't make it cause he wasn't butch enough. Lets hope for a real reunion first then find someone who can sing after that.
Sticking with that approach, huh?
No. But if they hired a Filipino guy who sang in a VH tribute band I'd consider it.
kidding...
Writing In All Proper Case Takes Extra Time, Is Confusing To Read, And Is Completely Pointless.
No.
Same as I would not support a VH if Eddie were gone. Eddie and Dave are must haves. The chocolate & peanut butter of my Reeses cup. No substitutes, no replacements. Either one goes it isn't a Reeses anymore.
Just look how awful they became without Dave. Sammy was a decent rock singer and guitar player with a fair amount of fame. In fact, at the time he was the only conceivable person to even attempt to fill those shoes. He came in and the band became a steaming pile in just 2 albums.
“Great losses often bring only a numb shock. To truly plunge a victim into misery, you must overwhelm him with many small sufferings.”
Mabye if All members of Van Halen inexplicably died and Ralph Saenz is the lead singer to an official Van Halen Tribute Band in memorial for VH. I'd support it. But otherwise, HELL NO.
How do you spell pretentious? S-A-M-M-Y H-A-G-A-R
Fuck no. Replacing a lead singer rarely works, if VH were still a young band only a few albums into their career I would say why not? But if something happened to Dave they need to retire the Van Halen band name, look at what happened when they brought Sammy Fagar in, I rest my case.
"Van Halen was one of the most hallelujah, tailgate, backyard, BBQ, arrive four hours early to the gig just for the parking lot bands. And still to this day is. It's an attitude. I think it's a spirit more than anything else is."
I'd take Ralph Saenz if Dave left and it came down to him or bringing back Hagar. I saw Steel Panther a couple months ago and he can still nail those whistle screams Dave lost 20 years ago. I'm not saying he should replace Dave, but if it had to happen I would take Ralph Saenz over any other possible candidate. Plus, we started this web site running the atomic punks and supporting that band.
I'd take no replacement whatsoever. I'm more interested in what future recordings would sound like more so than future live shows. If Dave ain't singin', Ed and Al can find someone else and finally change the band name like they should have 28 years ago.
Well, at least Chris Cornell, like most of us of this generation who from the Pacific Northwest, grew up as a Van Halen fan, so he would probably do a good job on the songs if he did sing them. And I remember posting all over the boards that existed at the time (FORD Country, Slawterhouse, the VDIII board at Warner Brothers, etc) that Cornell would have been a much better fit for the band than Gary Cherone.
But it still wouldn't have been Van Halen. And given the short life of Audioslave, I doubt Chris would ever put himself in a situation again, where's he's playing with 3/4 of somebody else's band.
Well said, FORD. Now go clear out your message box so I can send you the one I typed earlier!
...livin in the online VH world for 19 years....thanks to a 2 year old.....
I agree Ford. I'm thinking in terms of Ed doing a stand alone project with a singer/co-songwriter rather then fill the unfillable shoes again.
The sheep over at Links used to go on and on about this mythological album that Eddie was allegedly planning with the likes of Phil Collins, Patty Smythe, Eric Clapton, and God only knows who else. I'm not sure if there was ever any sort of reality to any of it, but some of those collaborations might be interesting, provided Eddie was working with a strong songwriter. Because (as VDIII proved beyond all reasonable doubt) writing is NOT among Eddie's strengths, on his own.
I don't know if he had any hand in the writing on that "Starfleet" thing he did with Brian May, but that turned out pretty good. Cornell is a good writer so I would have expected positive results from that collaboration, if it would have happened. Now, how you tour on something like that, might be a whole other matter.
That EVH project was mentioned in one of the pre-5150 interviews but I don't remember if it was in Musician or Rolling Stone.
I'm thinking Musician because I subscribed to that mag and remember reading that there was talk about doing an Allstar album with those guys and Pete Townsend, too! Al said no that he wanted to just be in a band with a new singer!
Warner Bros might of brought it up?
Or Eddie himself, can't remember which!
Oh, and......no Dave, no VH, period!
I remember Ed saying he got Townsend's number from Pete Chen of Rod Stewart's band...
I miss Musician. Great mag. I got rid of a bunch of them after the first move. Would be nice if they showed up on Google docs or something.
If Dave goes, VH should close up shop or do instrumental soundtracks for adult films
"Bumper sticker on my rocket's ass: go home, the earth is full." DLR
In that Van Halen Unleashed (pffft) MTV special from '86, I recall Al being the one who prattles of the names Collins, Townshend, etc... I think he even mentions Mike Rutherford, which gives every indication just how aimless and clueless they were. And they arrived at... aimless and clueless.
I got into Musician after the Dave and EVH cover.
I laughed when Al brought up Rutherford's name...he doesn't sing, and it sounded like Ed wanted "all stars" on the vocals.
Yes. I was one of the original webmasters for the atomic punks web site when it was owned and operated by Sarge. I was the guy who went out to the shows taking pictures and doing interviews back when this site was the dlrarmy.com it was lots of fun. blueyedmurder was the main guy involved with that site as well as here. I think most of our early success was owed to him.
Before the message board opened up in May 2000 the original webbies were Sarge (founder) , Thatartguy and Daveman. Shortly after the online community started Pojo and brownsound1 became a webmaster, then me. Sarge soon bought the dlrnd.com (David Lee Roth News Desk) after Mike Blair stepped down and that was operated by me, houseofpain and Mike B (no affiliation to the other Mike) After that Commee became a webmaster as well as Blueyedmurder... Then the Roth Army closed shop. That's when Von Halen opened up DDLR.com.
Anyways... The 2nd coming in the mid 2000's brought along the Mezro era followed by VA Beach, and now Von halen and Sesh... Somewhere down the line Brett from vhlinks got the punks and they weren't promoted here anymore, but the atomic punks were endorsed by us for many years. There was never a better tribute band than Ralph and BYoung... It was brilliant! Sorry for the lecture.
Yeah, no way.
Chris Cornell ??????????
You gotta be on smack !!!!
I fucking HATE that piece of shit and his Black Hole Sun whinning voice. Watch the Micheal Mann movie, Colllateral, and there is a scene with a solo tune from that Seattle greaseball sissy douchbag, I swear to god I would rather be deaf than hear that curly haired sissy putz sing. He is the Bon Jovi of the 90's, all the greasy go no where people with nothing to live for and wish they had a Harley Davidson like him. He is the OZZY of the generation.
