I'd be willing to bet that Roth has witnessed some of Plant's greatest performances in the early 70s at the LA Forum. He probably also witnessed some later performances and heard firsthand how Percy completely blew out his voice in late 72.
Just go to the June 1972 Forum show and then go to the June 1973 forum shows. Right there Dave's point is proven.
I love both singers and notwithstanding the 2012 Dave which I witnessed firsthand, Roth still has a point. Plant destroyed his voice worse than any singer I've ever heard.

A little extreme but I agree somewhat. Dave got so big around 1983-1984 he just got full of himself and lost his 1981 edge. He never got it back. I never got the whole short hair and lame band 1994 tour. The Leno performance was horrid ! I thought who the fuck is this guy ?! He had some of it back in 07/08. If they hit the road again he better go back and watch a few of those shows. The Eat Em' tour was good. But with that talent it couldn't be anything else.

The short hair was needed after his restoration procedures so his plugs could grow and blend in naturally. As far as the Plant/Roth comparison, very smart of ol' Dave to draw a parallel between himself and Robert, coyly putting himself in the same echelon. Contrast these 2 at their individual primes and theres no contest, Plant was a much better singer. By bringing up Plant now, Dave is tacitly admitting his vocal shortcomings but at the same time excusing them by implying, "well, Robert Plant can't sing anymore either". Much as those ridiculous blower rants were schtick (couldn't he just have gone to the side of the stage and told someone to shut them down during an instrumental break?) as was the blowing his nose/hacking/sucking on lemons right there on stage for all to see, it was also Dave trying to distract from the elephant in the room. At least Plant doesn't have the burning need to be on stage in front of arena size crowds and tarnish his legacy.

Not anything against Jo[h]n Tesh (who actually is one of the nicest and modestly talented guys on the planet as I understand )... I just didn't get the reference to Kirsten Dunst and so I was just trying to make an obscure and meaningless association in turn.
My off-kilter sense of humor showing it's ass.

Don't worry. I still don't get it, and I'm a fairly sharp guy.
... anyhoo, Robert is apparently doing just fine these days.

Sorry if I'm necro posting (if that means posting in old threads that already ran their course) but Robert Plant and Dave are two different critter completely. On stage they both sing and dance around but RP never told anyone he was going to fuck their girlfriend or try to proof they could drink gallons of booze without barfing. RP never felt much need to be the man off stage. Dave tries to make his stage persona his real persona. RP was/is a family man who tries to keep his personal life and his stage life seperate. If the members of Zep ever fought backstage it stayed backstage. Van Halen is/was a great American band. Zep is/was a great band internationally. I think Zep will be remembered long after VH is completely forgotten. I still like Van Halen and Dave but I never thought VH and Zep were in the same league. VH could have been but ego killed that long ago.
BTW: If you hate Dave so much, why do you post here Kristy?

In my opinion the only time 'necro posting' is a problem is if the title is something like 'Hagar to tour with Van Halen' and it's from 10 years ago and gives people a fright.
Going back to non specific(datewise) topics and relaunching them I think is totally fine.
That said I'm Scottish and at this time of year not reliable in any way to the point that by law we officially have two days vacation just to get over the debauchery...

I wonder what Dave was like before he joined his first band. I'd like to hear what other things he was into. I've never read his book (if he has one) but I've never heard much about him other than his life with, after and with VH again. I know he likes cars but I've never heard about any he's owned. Other than the Merc that is. I almost forgot about the Merc.
Q: David Lee Roth Better Than Robert Plant Singing Live?
A: Yes! End of Discussion!
I've got an even better question. Why do we have to over-analyze shit that we already know? Is this a fuckin' college research project or something?!?! It's called rock n' roll, not homework!

Oh wait, here's another Q&A for ya!
Q: Why is Krusty such an uptight cunt?
A: Who the fuck knows, she just is!

That's probably true. I've heard something of that nature but you can't deny Plant had a much better solo career with musicians nobody ever heard of. He didn't need another Page to be successful. Dave had Steve Vai in his band and couldn't make it as a solo act. Van Halen screwed the pooch when they parted ways with Dave but they were headed for mediocrity even with Dave. The split with Dave just made everyone forget how shitty they were getting. They might have gotten their mojo back but we'll never know now.
SunisinuS (01-02-2014)
The singer is always going to be the weak link in an ageing band. Plant has realised that he can't do what he did at 22, and the rest of the band moderate the songs to accomodate him. The sisters don't, and Dave still struggles his way through.
I guess it's a question of versatility plus getting along............

I heard Peter Grant and Bonzo used to duke it out but the rest of the guys got along fine. The Beatles, The Who and The Stones used to get into fights but I never heard of the members of Zep beating or wanting to beat each other senseless. I read somewhere that the members of "Eagles" use to talk shit to each other during songs on stage. They'd say shit like after this show's over I'm kicking your ass on a regular basis. Henley and Frey are the only real "Eagles" left in the band. I think they fired the other guys one by one till they were the only two left.

Some of it I read, some of it I heard. I don't see the word herd in my post but I can't see very well so it might be there somewhere. There is a thing called a radio. They still play Zep for an hour here everyday of the week and tell Zep stories so it is possible but I have said heard in reference to things I've read.
Plant resisted putting Zeppelin back together for years after Bonham died, but truth be told Plant's voice did lose a chunk of power by the time the Houses of the Holy tour came around, and by the time they were touring to support Presence Plant was being very careful to not blow what he had left of his voice out, and as a result he began to rely live on a lot of harmonized, echoed vocal effects to pull off the higher-end stuff.
I doubt at this late date Plant could really do a lot of the Zeppelin tunes justice live in terms of trying to sing them how they were originally recorded.

He never could, except maybe the 1969 live stuff...

I just watched the Knebworth '79 stuff last night. Sounded damn good to me.
Plant was losing the high notes by 1973. Even back then, I was being accused of short changing him in the deal I made for his soul.

It is funny that people say Dave has a problem with his voice. His voice is fine. Dave's problem is that he CHOOSES to sing songs completely different from the recorded version. Different timing, different pitches. Guess what Dave - we don't want to hear that! We want to hear the songs more or less like they were recorded. There is nothing wrong with singing songs slightly different live to spice things up. But you carry it way too far to the point where the song almost isn't recognizable. You had the right balance of sticking to the original style singing and spicing things up during the 2007/2008 tour. But on the last tour you really screwed things up. The songs were almost unrecognizable the way you sang them. Please Dave, go back to your 2007/2008 style of singing. Thanks. Your fans.

On a related note... David Coverdale can still sing (unlike Plant). So Page and Jones should hire Coverdale, change the band's name to something like Houses of the Holy (or Deep Zeppelin, maybe Led Snake, or The New Yardsnakes), and print massive cash. Or even hire Ann Wilson for that matter (Led Heart - Nancy could play rhythm guitar).
Also for the dude that thinks Van Halen isn't in the same league as Led Zeppelin, you are utterly clueless I am sorry to say! The greatest bands of all time are The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Van Halen, and Led Zeppelin... in that order... imo! Also Van Halen was much more innovative than Led Zeppelin. Zeppelin plagiarized..... but I must say they did a damn fine job of it.

No. He just can't sing at all, he sounds terrible. This is not an issue of changing things up or spicing them up, as long as he waited and tried to get back in you would think he would have worked on his voice at least as hard as he worked on picking out his fey clothes. Or his killer floor slides! I guess he thinks people would rather watch that than listen to him at least try to sing.
But that is a true glimpse into Roth's mind... just because he rattles off clever quotes and mentions he reads books, I don't know why people insist on believing Roth is some sort big brained intellect. He's really just a creative smart ass with a severe case of ADHD that runs his mouth off too much!!

He did. He said he always wanted his voice to match Page's guitar in the early days. He also said once when he listened back to Zeppelin 1 that he wished he just would have shut the fuck up on some of it. I prefer his latter voice. Not as screechy. He was o.k. on the 02 show. But they tuned some songs down. Kashmir is steller. All these guys lose their voices. Except maybe Paul Rodgers. Rock & Roll is a young man's game.
I don't see any young people playing it...
