Nope. You're thinking of a national single payer system. Which this, sadly, is NOT. The reason why single payer IS the best solution is just as you said, everyone would be in the same pool. And the larger the pool is, the lower the risk (statistically speaking) and therefore, the lower the costs per person. Also, the admin overhead of a national system (i.e. Medicare or the VA, to use two existing examples) is considerably lower than that of a corporate model which by design has to make profits to pay CEOs and shareholders, which becomes their primary motivation (as opposed to anything actually having to do with health care)

Well, obviously one of the downsides of being a musician is that you don't have the "employer based coverage" that is the standard model in the US.
Of course when you reach Van Halen's level of success, you can afford to pay for doctor appointments, and even hospital visits out of pocket. Musicians who don't have platinum albums and sold out concert tours aren't so lucky..... even some reasonably well known guys like ex-Replacements guitarist Slim Dunlap, whose former bandmates had to make a new record to pay off his hospital bills after a stroke.

A corporation is simply a legal entity that makes the share holders not liable for what the corporations does. Corporations can be good or they can be bad. My doctor just went cash only. He could get rid of half his office staff because he doesn't need to process the insurance paperwork and he's cut his prices. Of course the government will try and shut this down but maybe just maybe enough people are seeing the light. Cash only on the small medical procedures and then have catastrophic coverage for the big stuff. Since most people are healthy the catastrophic coverage providers will make money.
We must remember the public did not want this legislation to begin with. They rammed it through on Christmas Eve and refused any time to see what they were passing. President Obama breaks the law by changing the law without congressional process. It's crap. The ACA is one of two things. It was written by connected insurance companies to run their competition out of business so they can enjoy monopoly pricing or it was designed to destroy the private insurance industry so a government ran program can come in. The government will have the monopoly. A government that has been completely taken over by bankers and no longer listens to the people. Oh yeah, it also breaks constitutional and international law by using bombs and missiles to kill people. Do you really want to give a corrupt government total power over your healthcare and your private health records? You just open yourself up to all sorts of black mail and black balling possibilities if you do. It's always stupid to put all your eggs in one basket. The more choice the better the more choice the cheaper the prices. It's called competition. There is already racketeering laws on the books. Don't make it sound like it's business as usual because it's not. If I don't purchase overpriced shit insurance I have to pay a fine (the government calls it a tax). This is family practice doctor visits. Not major surgery. He can cut his overhead by cutting his office staff. In the late 80's I saw plenty of people abusing employer provided insurance. I had a dentist trying to sell me cosmetic dentistry I did not need because my insurance would pay for it. Another doctor tried to get my wife on fertility drugs when she had no problem getting pregnant. Why? Our insurance would pay for it.
So there developed a big rip off circle jerk of the doctors and pharmaceutical companies ripping off the insurance companies and the liability lawyers driving up the cost of liability insurance and then the insurance companies used these rising costs as an excuse to price gouge us even more. It became a huge snowball of corruption. Then a bunch of crooks in Washington DC use this crisis (never let a crisis go to waste) to ram through the mother of all corruption. Not only does it give them control over our healthcare, it gives them control over our lives. It's very intrusive legislation.
So yeah. I'm all for cutting out all these middle men and dealing with my doctor directly. People in this country have it in their heads they have to go through a middle man but you pay more for the care that way.

It's a growing trend. Doctor visits were more cash only before the 1960's. The system worked well. In the old days if you didn't have cash you bartered with the doctor. There's some funny stories of what the old time country doctors would take in as payment. Plus the federal reserve is going to tank. The BRICS countries are no longer using the US Dollar in their trade so 22% of the world's economy just dumped the dollar. People are trying to quietly sell their dollars so they don't get stuck with them. Eventually nobody here will want them. So unless someone comes up with another option barter is going to become a necessity. They did plenty of that in Russia after the Soviet Union just fell apart. Some communities over there actually set up time banks where people would barter their skills. In some cases it worked very well.
