    Ghey.

Vaughn's playing was highly derivative and thoroughly boring. Ask Robin Trower, Frank Marino or any other Hendrix-cloning buttfucker who came before him.

Vaughn would be how you spell my first name, dumbass. Stevie Ray's last name is spelled Vaughan.

So when I hit up the "show your work" thread, I'll find samples of your playing style which is derivative of no one? I mean, c'mon already.

So SRV was rooted in the Hendrixian blues. BFD. Toasted or sober, he put on one hell of a show.

Not a bad performance. 86-88 were rough years for him.

BTW, who isn't derivative? 99% of music is derivative.

I used to see concerts at Alpine Valley, the place SRV died. I wasn't a big fan of his but he could play the guitar pretty damn good. I liked some of his Hendrix covers but his original stuff wasn't my cup of tea.

SRV was amazing live , yeah he didn't invent rock n roll but sure could play it .

I do believe he pushed the envelope with the bohemian ear spoon , check some of his stuff out ,well ahead of the curve .

I'd say Vaughan's playing was highly (like, REALLY highly) derivative.

But I like(d) listening to him just the same.

I would say others tend to overrate him a bit too highly for my tastes, but he played the blues so well. At least SRV played the blues fast, unlike, say, B.B. King.

Now, B.B. King is a blues player who is boring as fuck. So many say it's some kind of taboo to say anything non-complimentary about B.B. King, but his playing bores me shitless. 90% of Eric Clapton's does, too.

But I liked SRV's stuff, particularly when he was drinking heavily and using cocaine. After he sobered up, his playing got a little bit too stiff for my liking. Texas Flood and Couldn't Stand The Weather are two good albums.

    Also, fuck Paul McCartney.

Forever I've wondered that Clapton and particularly BB King doing nothing for me was my failing or just an emperors new clothes situation.

Clapton is a more than competent guitar player he just doesn't push the boundaries. He doesn't try to show he's faster or louder or flashier than other guitar players or even the other guys he's on stage with. I'm not big into BB but when I've seen him play he plays a note at a time and get's the maximum use of the note. That might not be technically correct.

One thing Clapton is superb at are blues bends, or bending notes. I'll certainly give him that.

I suppose there is something to be said for economical playing, such as Elvis alluded to. B.B. King is definitely an economical player...to an absurd degree:

    Typical B.B. King-type song -

(sings) I got me a good woman
    She never treats me wrong

(2 or at max 3 note blues pentatonic fill on g string)

(sings) I say, I got me a woman
    Nohow she treats me wrong

(2 note g string blues pentatonic fill)

(sings) When my woman's walkin' to me
    Lord, it makes me strong

(3 note g string blues pentatonic fill)

    Lather, rinse, repeat

Now, one or two songs in this vein are fine. When it's virtually tune after tune of this stuff...hey, blues legend or not, that shit gets tired real quick.

I have always thought that SRV's version of little wing was my favourite piece of guitar music period.
Just my opinion but sometimes Ive listened to it , over the years and time just stands still until the music stops .

Do some blow, down some Crown Royal/Scotch mix, perform this note for note, including the passage at 7:31 and get back to me - video or it didn't happen!

Was this a late-night sneaky uncle?

I suspect it was, and it makes his hypothesis and conclusion a little too queasy to contemplate.

People get so precious about these guys...especially since the music press has been hailing them for years as icons, that it gets to the point where if you don't fall to your knees praising the very mention of their names then there's something wrong with you...or 'you just don't understand the blues if you don't like them'...like, just because Jann Wenner wants to suck Mick Jagger's cock doesn't mean every single thing the Rolling Stones ever did was worth paying money to listen to (shit, some of their tracks weren't even worth spending the TIME to listen to them). As such, every time Clapton or King plays some slow, 12-bar blues for the umpteenth million time, it 's not always gonna be some sacred hosanna.

Hey, fuck that. I like the blues. And as blues players, King and Clapton are boring. Stevie Ray Vaughan was an exciting blues player.

Man, I never get tired of watching that. Thanks for posting it! I believe it was EVH himself who said "When the man solos, he speaks", referring to Jimmy Page. I always thought that quote was much more applicable to SRV. And that behind the back shit? Fuggedaboudit!

Actually, didn't Ed say to Jas Obrecht in a GP interview that Page plays like he has a broken hand?

... I wonder what Page thinks about Ed's ability to write?
